The famous “Vampire Killer” theme is most strongly identified with the opening stage of the first Castlevania, also known as Akumajō Dracula. The name creates two common points of confusion: Vampire Killer is also the title of a 1986 MSX2 version of the original game concept, and the composition appears in later Castlevania releases and soundtrack recordings. You can hear it while playing the first game’s opening stage, in the MSX2 Vampire Killer, in several games listed by Konami’s Castlevania Advance Collection music guide, and on the Castlevania Chronicles original soundtrack.

The direct answer: the first Castlevania

If someone asks which Castlevania game has the “Vampire Killer” song, the safest single answer is the first Castlevania—the game also identified by its Japanese title, Akumajō Dracula. The theme is heard in the opening stage, which is why it became the musical introduction most closely associated with the series.

That answer identifies the best-known original placement, not the only place the music appears. Konami’s later track documentation uses “Vampire Killer” for music in several other games, while a separate soundtrack listing names a recorded track “Vampire Killer – Stage 1.” To find the version you want, first decide whether you want to play a game that contains the music or listen to a standalone recording.

Why the title causes confusion

“Vampire Killer” can refer to three related things:

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • The composition used in the opening stage of the first Castlevania.
  • Vampire Killer, Konami’s 1986 MSX2 version of the original game concept.
  • Later in-game tracks and album entries that retain “Vampire Killer” in their titles.

Those uses are connected, but they are not interchangeable. Searching only for the game title can lead you to the MSX2 release; searching only for the music title can lead you to a later arrangement or a soundtrack track rather than the original stage. The name alone does not establish that two recordings use identical audio, instrumentation or arrangement.

Where the original version plays

First-stage placement

The defining placement is the opening stage of the first Castlevania. This is the version to choose when you want the theme in the context that established its identity: start the game and listen to the music assigned to the first stage.

The phrase “opening stage” matters. The theme is not being identified here as a menu cue, ending cue or a song from an unspecified point in the game. Its recognized role is the music heard as the player begins the first stage. A recording labeled “Stage 1” is therefore referring to the same introductory placement, even when it is presented on an album rather than during play.

What can be stated with confidence

The available documentation supports the game and stage identification, but it does not establish a single modern audio master, a definitive concert arrangement or one universally identical recording. If you are comparing uploads or albums, treat the first-game stage music as the reference point and check the release’s own track label before assuming it is the same arrangement.

The MSX2 game named Vampire Killer

Konami’s Castlevania history identifies Vampire Killer as a 1986 MSX2 version of the original Castlevania concept. This is a game title, not merely an alternate name for the song.

That distinction answers the question “Is Vampire Killer from the first Castlevania or the MSX game?” The composition is chiefly associated with the first game’s opening stage, while Vampire Killer is the name of a related MSX2 game. The two references belong in the same historical conversation, but saying that the theme “comes from the MSX game” reverses the usual identification.

If your goal is to hear the music through play, the MSX2 title is a separate route from the first game. If your goal is to identify the canonical association, use the first Castlevania and its opening-stage placement as the anchor.

Later game appearances documented by Konami

Konami’s official music list for the Castlevania Advance Collection documents “Vampire Killer” entries connected with three later games. The list is useful because it preserves the exact labels rather than relying on fan shorthand.

Castlevania: Circle of the Moon

The collection’s music list includes a track simply titled “Vampire Killer” under Circle of the Moon. The listing confirms that the title appears in that game’s documented music selection. It does not, by itself, claim that this track is an audio-for-audio copy of the first game’s stage music.

Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance

For Harmony of Dissonance, Konami labels the entry “Extra Stage Music 3 – ‘Vampire Killer.’” The “Extra Stage Music 3” wording is important: it identifies the track’s place in that game’s extra-stage music grouping, rather than describing the first game’s opening stage.

Castlevania: Vampire’s Kiss

The same official list includes “Vampire Killer” among the music tracks for Castlevania: Vampire’s Kiss. As with the other collection entries, the title confirms a documented appearance, while the list alone does not specify that the arrangement is identical to the original recording.

What the collection evidence tells you

These entries make the Castlevania Advance Collection a practical way to investigate later in-game versions, provided your regional edition includes the relevant games and music. Standalone listening: the Castlevania Chronicles soundtrack

A separate listening option is the Akumajo Dracula Castlevania Chronicles Original Soundtrack. Its album listing includes a track named “Vampire Killer – Stage 1.” That exact wording points to the first-stage identity and presents it as a recorded soundtrack track rather than a cue you must reach by playing through a game.

This is the clearest documented route when you want an album track. It should still be treated as a soundtrack release, not proof that every version of “Vampire Killer” across the series uses the same recording. Before buying or linking to a physical copy, confirm that a current listing exists in your region; the documented album entry does not guarantee present-day stock.

How to choose the right way to hear it

If you want the original game context

  1. Choose the first Castlevania, also called Akumajō Dracula.
  2. Begin the game rather than opening a music or extras menu.
  3. Listen to the music in the opening stage; that is the placement most closely tied to the theme’s identity.

If you want to explore later playable versions

  1. Use the official Castlevania Advance Collection music list as a checklist.
  2. Look for the entries under Circle of the Moon, Harmony of Dissonance and Vampire’s Kiss.
  3. For Harmony of Dissonance, search for the complete label “Extra Stage Music 3 – ‘Vampire Killer’,” not only the shorter title.
  4. Confirm that the edition available to you contains the relevant game and track list, since regional editions and current storefront availability are not established by the music list itself.

If you want a recorded track without playing

  1. Look for the Akumajo Dracula Castlevania Chronicles Original Soundtrack.
  2. Use the exact listing “Vampire Killer – Stage 1” to distinguish it from similarly titled tracks.
  3. Check the current physical or digital listing in your region before purchase; availability can change.

Original composition versus later arrangements

“Vampire Killer” is best understood on two axes: where it is playable and whether the release is presenting the original composition or a later arrangement. The first game supplies the central stage placement. The MSX2 title is a related game history entry. The Advance Collection list supplies later game-specific track labels, and the Castlevania Chronicles album supplies a standalone “Stage 1” recording.

Those categories answer different questions. “Which game features the theme?” points to a playable placement. “Where can I listen to it?” may point to an album. “Is this the same version?” requires comparing the release’s own audio or liner information; the cited listings establish titles and placements, not a claim that every recording is sonically identical.

When cataloging a file or video, record both the source and the label: for example, “first Castlevania, opening stage,” “Harmony of Dissonance, Extra Stage Music 3,” or “Castlevania Chronicles soundtrack, Vampire Killer – Stage 1.” That notation prevents a game track, a historical game title and an album recording from being treated as one undifferentiated item.

Common identification mistakes

  • Answering only “Vampire Killer.” That is ambiguous because it names both the theme and the MSX2 game.
  • Calling the MSX2 game the source of the song. The strongest association is the opening stage of the first Castlevania; the MSX2 release is a related 1986 version of the game concept.
  • Assuming every later listing is the original recording. Konami’s lists confirm titles and appearances, not identical instrumentation or audio masters.
  • Confusing “Stage 1” with a game title. On the Castlevania Chronicles album, “Vampire Killer – Stage 1” is a soundtrack track label.
  • Ignoring edition and region. A collection’s documented music list does not guarantee that every current regional package, platform or retailer offers the same access.

Bottom line

Start with the first Castlevania if you need the canonical answer: “Vampire Killer” plays in its opening stage. Treat the 1986 MSX2 Vampire Killer as the related game title, then use Konami’s Castlevania Advance Collection list to find documented later appearances in Circle of the Moon, Harmony of Dissonance and Vampire’s Kiss. For album listening, look for “Vampire Killer – Stage 1” on the Akumajo Dracula Castlevania Chronicles Original Soundtrack.
