There is no camera-setting recipe established here for ISO, aperture, shutter speed, or color temperature: PSA’s numeric recommendations apply to scans for its digital card album, not to camera photographs or a universal grading standard.
Set up the card and camera
- Use a plain, contrasting background. Keep the complete card outline, all four corners, and a small margin in frame. Photograph the front and back separately. PSA advises filling the frame without digital zoom, which it says adds noise. See PSA’s Digital Card Album imaging tips.
- Keep the camera parallel to the card and steady. Focus on the card and avoid an oblique angle that hides an edge or corner. PSA suggests using a phone’s volume button to take the picture; a stable surface or mount can also help keep framing consistent.
- Review the unaltered original. Check that the image is sharp and that no reflection blocks a border, corner, or surface detail. Retake it if blur or glare interferes with what the image shows. BAO Grade’s card-photography guidance also emphasizes clear, useful views.
Light the card without hiding details
Use bright, diffuse or indirect light rather than direct flash. PSA warns that flash can distort the card’s true colors and advises watching for glare. Its guide puts the point plainly: “Remember to turn off your flash, as it will ruin the true colors of your card. Watch out for glare as well.” That advice is from PSA’s Digital Card Album imaging tips, not a current submission rule.
For a simple controlled setup, try two lights positioned at about 45 degrees to the flat card. National Museums Scotland describes this arrangement as a way to produce even light in collection photography and advises diffusing direct sunlight. It is general photography guidance, not a grading-company requirement. A suitable window or existing lamp may be enough if it gives an even result.
Handle foil and glossy cards separately
Reflective surfaces can show a bright reflection over the very area you need to document. Keep one straight-on, full-card view, then take an additional view after moving the light or card so the reflection shifts. Do not crop away the card’s outline. A reflection that obscures a feature is not, by itself, conclusive evidence of a defect; the image records visible evidence, not the card’s physical condition.

Keep color faithful
Avoid mixing different kinds of light when practical, since their color casts can make a card look unlike it does under neutral viewing conditions. Canon says automatic white balance often works in daylight and many mixed-light situations; for tighter color matching, a neutral reference can support manual white balance. Do not edit the card’s color to make it appear more attractive. PSA’s guidance against color adjustment is specifically for scans, but the same restraint is useful when the goal is an honest record: preserve the original image and avoid edits that could misrepresent the card.

Camera settings: what is actually specified
PSA does not give fixed ISO, shutter-speed, aperture, or color-temperature values for phone photographs in the cited imaging guidance. Because exposure depends on the camera, lighting, and whether the phone is stabilized, inventing one set of numbers would not create a reliable grading-photo standard.
PSA’s older Digital Card Album Guide, published circa 2014, gives these values for scanning, not camera exposure and not as a current submission requirement:

For those scans, PSA also advises showing front and back and all corners, avoiding sharpening, resizing, and color adjustment, and saving high-quality JPEG files. These are album-imaging instructions; they should not be presented as a universal camera recipe or current grading-submission policy.
Choose a camera or scanner for the evidence you need
A scanner can provide repeatable, flat images; a camera can capture another lighting angle that helps make reflections move. Neither method is established as sufficient to reveal every defect on every card surface. For a useful record, prioritize repeatability, sharp focus, complete borders and corners, glare control, faithful color, and clear images of both sides.

PSA’s current FAQ says its app’s identification scanner works best with good lighting, a clear scan, and a contrasting background; if identification fails, PSA suggests manual text search. This feature is for identifying cards in the app, not grading cards from customer photos.
