For HomePod home theater, set your HomePod or stereo pair as Apple TV 4K’s Default Audio Output and leave Audio Format on Auto. Turn on Enhance Dialogue only if you want clearer speech. Atmos and surround play automatically when the content and setup support them; there is no need to force a format as a general sound-quality upgrade.
Set HomePod as Apple TV’s default audio output
First make sure Apple TV and HomePod are assigned to the same room in the Home app and are on the same network. If you want to use two HomePods, create a stereo pair before choosing the output. Apple’s HomePod home theater setup guide and Apple TV audio settings guide describe the setup.
- On Apple TV 4K, open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Output.
- Select your HomePod or HomePod stereo pair as the default output. If prompted during setup, choose Use as TV Speakers.
- Alternatively, on an iPhone or iPad, open the Home app, select Apple TV, open its settings, then choose Default Audio Output.
Once selected, HomePod receives Apple TV audio, including navigation sounds. If HomePod does not appear, check the room assignment, network, software updates, and—when using two speakers—that the stereo pair is configured.
Keep Audio Format on Auto
For ordinary use, leave Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format set to Auto. Apple says Apple TV chooses the best format supported by the equipment and available in the content. A forced format is not a universal quality improvement. The options shown can depend on the connected equipment. See Apple’s audio settings explanation.

| Setting | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Auto | Apple TV selects an appropriate supported format and sends uncompressed audio to speakers. | Recommended starting point for HomePod home theater. |
| Dolby Digital 5.1 | Re-encodes audio to compressed Dolby Digital 5.1. | Use only if the connected equipment does not support Dolby Atmos or multichannel PCM. |
| Stereo Only | Sends uncompressed two-channel PCM. | Use for a stereo-only setup. |
Understand when Atmos and surround are available
With a compatible HomePod setup, Apple TV plays Dolby Atmos or surround automatically when the format is available in the content. Check that the title actually offers Atmos and that the Apple TV and HomePod combination supports it before changing settings. Apple’s Dolby Atmos and surround guide and Atmos setup article describe the requirements.
HomePod mini is a significant exception: it renders supported audio in mono or stereo, but does not support Dolby Atmos or Dolby 5.1/7.1 surround. It can still be selected for audio, but it should not be treated as an Atmos or surround speaker.

Adjust dialogue and loudness only to solve a listening problem
Enhance Dialogue
If voices are difficult to understand, open Settings > Video and Audio > Enhance Dialogue. Apple provides Off, Enhance, and Enhance More. Enhance makes dialogue more prominent with minimal impact; Enhance More makes it especially prominent and may change the original mix. Apple specifically recommends enabling the feature to improve dialogue intelligibility in its HomePod user guide.
Reduce Loud Sounds
Reduce Loud Sounds lowers overall sound by reducing dynamic range. Use it as a listening preference when loud effects are disruptive; it is not needed to route Apple TV audio to HomePod.

Leave Continuous Audio Connection alone unless you need its behavior
Continuous Audio Connection uses Dolby MAT to transition between audio formats without glitches or dropped signals. It is not a general sound-quality setting. An older receiver may show an Atmos indicator even when the original program audio is stereo, multichannel, or Atmos. If you need a receiver to distinguish formats for processing such as upmixing, turning this setting off may help. Apple discusses this behavior in its Apple TV audio settings guide.
Route audio from a TV-connected console or player through HomePod
This is an optional eARC setup, separate from the normal Apple TV-to-HomePod connection. Apple documents it for Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later) with an eARC-compatible TV. You also need a suitable HDMI connection, HDMI-CEC enabled, HomePod selected as the default output, and Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Return Channel > Play Television Audio enabled. TV-specific setup may vary, so consult the TV maker’s instructions. Apple’s AirPlay, HomePod, and eARC guide covers the feature.

HomePod options for Apple TV home theater
| Speaker option | Relevant capability | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| HomePod | Apple documents Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital 7.1, or Dolby Digital 5.1 home theater formats when supported by the setup and content. | Select it as the default output for a single-speaker setup. |
| HomePod stereo pair | Supported as a home theater output. | Create the pair first and place the speakers on either side of the TV. |
| HomePod mini | Supported formats render in mono or stereo; Atmos and Dolby 5.1/7.1 surround are not supported. | Suitable for basic audio output, not Atmos or surround home theater. |
Apple’s home theater guide suggests placing a single HomePod within 10 inches (25 centimeters) of a wall and placing a stereo pair about 4 feet (1.2 meters) apart. Treat those as Apple’s setup guidance, rather than a guarantee that every room will sound the same.
