On Apple TV 4K, start with Audio Format: Auto. The settings that most directly affect Dolby Atmos and surround output are Audio Format, Dolby Atmos and Continuous Audio Connection. The selected Audio Output also matters because it determines where sound is sent. None of these settings can add an Atmos track to content that does not offer one or make an incompatible device or connection support Atmos.
Which audio settings matter most?
Apple TV 4K normally selects the best format supported by both the connected equipment and the content. In Auto, Apple says it decodes the best format for the equipment and sends uncompressed audio to speakers. Use Auto as the baseline; change it when a specific compatibility problem calls for it. Apple’s audio settings guide notes that options can vary by model, tvOS version, region and connected equipment.

How to turn on Dolby Atmos on Apple TV 4K
- Open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format.
- Keep Change Format off and leave the format on Auto, unless your equipment requires a manual format.
- Turn on Dolby Atmos if the option appears. If it is missing, check the connected equipment and signal path rather than assuming the Apple TV has a software fault.
- Open Audio Output and select the intended TV, soundbar, receiver or HomePod destination.
Labels and available choices depend on the Apple TV model, tvOS version and connected devices. Apple lists supported Atmos setup types as one or two HomePod speakers, an Atmos-capable TV, an Atmos soundbar with an Atmos-capable TV, or an Atmos-enabled AV receiver. Why Dolby Atmos may be missing or not playing
The title or app may not offer Atmos
Atmos is content-dependent. Check the title’s audio information for the Dolby Atmos icon; a system setting cannot create an Atmos mix where the app or program does not provide one.

The connection path may not carry the required format
For an Atmos soundbar or AV receiver, Apple recommends connecting Apple TV 4K directly to an HDMI input on the soundbar or receiver, then connecting that device’s output to the TV. Apple’s setup guide says Apple TV 4K’s high-bandwidth Atmos format does not work over ARC connections. If considering a route through the TV, verify that the TV passes the required Atmos format, that the audio device accepts the video formats you need, and whether ARC or eARC limits apply to those specific models.
Quick Start may be off
Apple says Atmos will not play if Quick Start is turned off. Check that requirement along with the system and connection setup if an Atmos-capable title does not play in Atmos.

The selected destination may be wrong
If sound is going to TV speakers, headphones or another device instead of the intended receiver or soundbar, verify the selection under Audio Output.
Should you choose Auto or Dolby Digital 5.1?
Choose Auto for the normal setup: it allows Apple TV to use the best format supported by the connected equipment and the content. Convert to Dolby Digital 5.1 is a compatibility fallback for equipment that cannot handle Atmos or multichannel PCM. It produces compressed 5.1 audio, not Atmos. Stereo Only is narrower still: it sends two-channel PCM for a stereo setup.

Why does a receiver show Atmos during stereo content?
Continuous Audio Connection uses Dolby MAT to keep the connection steady while audio formats change. Apple cautions that older receivers may show an Atmos signal indicator even when the original program is stereo, multichannel or Atmos. The indicator alone therefore does not prove that the source is an Atmos track. This setting may also affect a receiver’s ability to identify stereo for upmixing.

- Reseat the HDMI cable at both ends and test another cable if available.
- Confirm the selected destination in Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Output.
- Try changing Audio Format if the connected equipment has a compatibility issue; return to Auto if manual conversion does not help.
- Turn off Continuous Audio Connection as a troubleshooting test.
- If the television requires it, try Audio Mode: 16 bit.
- For Apple’s cable guidance, use an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable with HDMI 2.1 or a Premium High Speed HDMI cable with HDMI 2.0.
