For reliable Moto Tag 2 tracking, keep Bluetooth on, allow Google Find Hub the nearby-device access it requests, and turn on Find Hub’s device-location setting. Location Accuracy can help when a map position is imprecise. On Motorola software documented by Motorola, Battery Saver disables location services, so test with it off if location-dependent features are failing. The tag’s coin-cell battery is separate from your phone’s battery: check its level in the Moto Tag app.

Set up the phone-side essentials

Keep Bluetooth on

Moto Tag 2 uses Bluetooth Low Energy for nearby finding, and Bluetooth is required during setup. If your phone cannot see or communicate with the tag nearby, check that Bluetooth is enabled. See Motorola’s Moto Tag 2 guide.

Allow Find Hub to access nearby devices

During setup, grant Google Find Hub the nearby-device permissions it requests to find, connect to, and determine the relative position of nearby devices while you use the app. Sign in to the Google account paired with the tag; viewing its location may also require your screen lock.

Allow the device to be located

Motorola’s Android 16 example path is Settings > Google > All services > Find Hub > Allow device to be located. This lets Find Hub access the tag’s precise location while the app is in use, according to Motorola. Paths vary by phone and software version, so search Settings for “Find Hub” if you do not see those labels.

Use location settings and Battery Saver thoughtfully

Check Location Accuracy if the map position is imprecise

Motorola says Location Accuracy can improve location accuracy in Maps and Find Hub. It may help with map precision, but it does not guarantee that a tracker location is fresh. Search Settings for “Location Accuracy” if the setting is not where expected. See Motorola’s location-services help.

Test Battery Saver if location-dependent behavior fails

On the Motorola phone software described in that help page, Battery Saver disables location services. If tracking or another location-dependent function is failing while Battery Saver is active, test with it off. The behavior may differ across phones and software versions; do not treat permanently disabling battery-saving features as a universal fix. Search Settings for “Battery Saver” to check its state.

Understand nearby precision options

Bluetooth Low Energy is the baseline for nearby connection. Moto Tag 2 also supports optional precision features, but the phone must have the required hardware and software; enabling a setting cannot add missing capabilities.

Feature What it does Requirements stated by Motorola
Bluetooth Low Energy Supports nearby finding and setup. Bluetooth must be available and on.
Ultra-wideband (UWB) Helps a compatible nearby phone pinpoint the tag. A UWB-capable Android phone running Android 12 or later, with UWB enabled; availability varies by region.
Bluetooth Channel Sounding Provides an additional nearby precision feature. A supported Bluetooth 6.0 Android phone running Android 16 or later, with the feature supported and enabled.

UWB and Channel Sounding are not prerequisites for basic pairing. If a precision option is missing, check phone compatibility, Android version, regional availability for UWB, and the relevant setting. Motorola’s Moto Tag 2 guide and product page describe these requirements. Search Settings for “UWB” when checking a compatible phone.

Know what a remote location can—and cannot—show

When the tag is out of nearby range, Google Find Hub can use its network to help locate it. Participating Android devices scan for nearby items over Bluetooth; if one detects the tag, it reports that detection’s location to Find Hub. Until another detection occurs, the map may show the last known location. A stale pin therefore does not, by itself, prove that a phone permission is wrong.

Preserve the tag’s battery and check its status

The tracker has its own replaceable CR2032 coin cell; its battery is distinct from the Android phone’s battery settings. Motorola’s product page says the tag can last over 600 days on one battery, an approximate estimate based on a median user under optimal network conditions. Motorola notes that actual performance varies with factors including temperature, battery condition, and usage patterns, so this is not a guaranteed lifespan. See the Motorola product page.

Use the Moto Tag app to check detailed battery level and update the tag’s firmware. Motorola says some functions are disabled when the tag battery is low and advises replacing it before the tag stops working. The battery is user-replaceable. See Moto Tag app support, the Moto Tag 2 guide, and Moto Tag 2 support.

Troubleshoot in this order

  1. Confirm setup: Make sure the tag is paired to the intended Google account in Find Hub and the phone has internet access. Motorola lists internet access and a Google account as prerequisites for full Fast Pair setup. If Fast Pair does not start, Motorola advises updating Google Play services.
  2. Check nearby connection: Turn on Bluetooth, then verify Find Hub’s nearby-device permissions and “Allow device to be located.” Search Settings for “Find Hub” if your phone’s menu path differs from Motorola’s Android 16 example.
  3. Check location behavior: If the map position is imprecise, check Location Accuracy. If location-dependent behavior fails while Battery Saver is active, test with it off, keeping in mind that its effect varies by phone and software.
  4. Check precision-feature compatibility: For UWB, verify compatible hardware, Android 12 or later, the UWB setting, and regional availability. For Channel Sounding, verify supported Bluetooth 6.0 hardware and Android 16 or later. Android 9 compatibility alone does not establish support for either precision feature.
  5. Check the tag itself: In the Moto Tag app, inspect battery status and update firmware. Replace the CR2032 if the battery is low.
  6. Interpret a stale remote pin: Find Hub needs a participating Android device to detect the tag for a new network location. A last-known position may remain until another detection is reported.
