On an older Android phone, start by lowering screen brightness and shortening screen timeout; the display is often a practical first place to cut drain. Then check which apps are using battery in the background, keep Adaptive Battery or the manufacturer’s equivalent enabled if available, and use Battery Saver when you can tolerate delayed updates. These changes may extend time between charges, but Google does not give a standard number of extra hours for them—and settings cannot restore capacity lost to battery wear.
Start with the display
Reducing how long and how brightly the screen stays on is usually the least disruptive first adjustment. Change one setting at a time and use the phone normally so you can judge whether the trade-off suits you.
Lower brightness and shorten screen timeout
Lower brightness to a comfortable level and set the screen to turn off sooner. On Pixel phones, the path is Settings → Display & touch → Screen timeout; on other Android phones, look under Display or the manufacturer’s equivalent. The menu name and available timeout choices vary by model.
Try Adaptive brightness and Dark theme
Adaptive brightness can adjust the screen automatically, if your phone offers it and you find the behavior useful. Dark theme is also worth trying for comfort or preference: Google says it can save battery on some screens, not all, so treat any savings as device- and display-dependent rather than guaranteed. Battery Saver may enable Dark theme automatically on some phones.

Turn off optional display effects
On supported Pixel models, Google recommends disabling Always-on Display and Smooth Display to save power. These are not universal Android settings, so do not assume another brand’s phone has the same options or names. Google’s general Android battery guidance also lists turning off keyboard sounds or vibration as possible ways to reduce drain.
Find and address apps that use battery in the background
Check actual usage before restricting apps. Open Settings → Battery → Battery usage where that path exists, then review which apps are consuming power and whether their background activity is necessary. Labels and controls differ by Android version and manufacturer. Google notes that downloaded apps can contribute to poor battery life.

Keep Adaptive Battery or app optimization enabled
On Pixel phones, Google recommends leaving apps set to Optimized in battery settings as the general default, while noting that only some apps allow their battery use to be changed. Pixel’s Adaptive Battery learns from usage and limits how less-used apps use battery. Google Pixel Help puts the trade-off this way: “Adaptive Battery learns from your phone usage to continuously optimize how apps use battery. To extend battery life, it may reduce performance and delay notifications.” See Google Pixel Help’s Adaptive Battery guidance.
Keep background access available for apps whose timely alerts or ongoing work matter to you, such as messaging or navigation. Restrict an app only when its observed battery use and your needs justify the possibility of delayed updates or reduced background function. Adaptive Battery behavior is not identical across every Android manufacturer.

Allow time for optimization after setup or reset
Google says Pixel’s adaptive optimization may take a few weeks to take full effect after initial setup or a factory reset. This timing applies to Pixel guidance; it is not a promise about every Android phone.
Use Battery Saver when the trade-off makes sense
Turn on Battery Saver manually when you need to stretch a low charge, or set a schedule if your phone provides one. It can limit or turn off background activity and may delay apps, network connections, features, or visual effects. The exact behavior and controls depend on the phone, so check the on-screen description before relying on an app or service to update promptly.

Adjust connectivity only when you can spare the function
Connectivity changes are conditional savings, not universal fixes. Google says Wi-Fi can use less battery than mobile data in some circumstances. Use Wi-Fi instead when practical, and turn off a connection only if losing its related function is acceptable.
- Turn off hotspot or tethering when you finish sharing the connection.
- Disable Bluetooth or Location only when you do not need connected accessories, location services, or apps that depend on them.
- Use Airplane mode only when you do not need mobile network access.
On supported Pixels, turning off Smooth Display or Always-on Display may also be an option, but those controls are device-specific. Google’s general Android guide notes that some actions apply only to Android 13 and later; its Pixel guides also identify version- and model-specific steps. Reduce drain from demanding activities
Some of the biggest practical changes are about how you use the phone, not a setting. Long navigation sessions using GPS, streaming, hotspot use, video recording, camera use, and graphics-heavy games can consume substantial battery. Shortening those sessions or doing them while connected to power can help when runtime matters.
If battery life suddenly gets worse, troubleshoot before resetting
A recent software update can temporarily increase battery use on Pixel while the phone downloads and optimizes software. Google advises seeking support if unusual drain continues for several days; this is Pixel-specific troubleshooting guidance, not a diagnosis for every Android model. Google’s Pixel battery-drain troubleshooting page discusses finding a cause.
For persistent problems, Google’s general guidance includes restarting the phone, checking for Android and app updates, and contacting the manufacturer or carrier. A factory reset removes data, so treat it as a last resort and back up first rather than using it as a routine battery tip.
Settings cannot reverse battery wear
Battery capacity degrades with age and use. Display, app, and connectivity adjustments can reduce current drain, but they cannot make a worn battery perform like a new one. Google recommends keeping a phone cool because heat can increase drain even while idle and can damage the battery. It also says there is no need to train a battery by repeatedly charging from zero to full.

If you need a replacement charging adapter, Google advises using the adapter supplied with the phone; other adapters may charge slowly, fail to charge, or damage the phone or battery. Verify model and connector compatibility when replacing one. A different charger is not a way to increase the phone’s runtime.
