To make an Android phone last longer between charges, start by lowering screen brightness and shortening screen timeout. Keep Adaptive Battery and app battery optimization on where available, and use Battery Saver when you need extra runtime from a low charge. Turn off hotspot, Location, Bluetooth, or other connectivity features when you are not using them. Exact controls differ by manufacturer, model, and Android version, so treat the Pixel menu paths below as examples rather than universal instructions.
Which Android battery settings make the biggest practical difference?
Google’s general Android guidance focuses on screen use, background activity, and connections. Start with changes that preserve normal phone use, then use Battery Saver for a temporary stretch. Google does not publish a universal estimate for how many minutes or hours these changes add: battery life depends on the device and how it is used.
- Screen: reduce brightness and shorten screen timeout. Adaptive brightness can help if it suits your environment.
- Background activity: leave Adaptive Battery and app battery optimization enabled where available; investigate apps that show unusually high battery use.
- Low-charge backup: use Battery Saver when you need the phone to last longer before you can charge it.
- Connections: turn off hotspot and features such as Bluetooth or Location when they are not needed.
Google’s general recommendations are in its Android battery guidance. It notes that some steps apply only to Android 13 and later and directs users to their device manufacturer for exact instructions.
How should you change display settings?
Lower brightness and shorten screen timeout
Set brightness to a comfortable level rather than leaving the display brighter than necessary. Set the screen to turn off sooner when idle. Google gives 30 seconds as an example on Pixel, not a universal ideal; choose a timeout that fits how you use your phone. Enable Adaptive brightness if automatic adjustment works well in your surroundings.

Consider screen-specific options on Pixel
On supported Pixel phones, Google also recommends turning off Always-on Display, Smooth Display, or live wallpapers if you do not need them. These controls are model-specific and may not appear on other Android phones.
Try Dark theme without expecting a fixed saving
Dark theme appears in Google’s general list of battery-saving settings, but its effect is not quantified in the guidance. Whether it helps depends on the device and screen, so treat it as a setting to try rather than a guaranteed runtime increase.
Should Adaptive Battery and app optimization stay on?
Usually, yes. Adaptive Battery learns how you use your phone and reduces background activity for apps you use less often. Google’s Pixel guidance says, “If you keep Adaptive Battery on, apps that you use less often will run less while you’re not using them.” App battery optimization similarly limits background use. The available controls and names vary by phone.

On Pixel, check which apps are using battery before changing their behavior. Google recommends leaving apps set to Optimized. Restricting an app further may reduce background activity, but it can also delay notifications or other work. Conversely, turning off optimization for an app can let it run more in the background and use more battery.

Android may also pause background activity and notifications for apps that have not been used for a long time. If an app needs to keep working, review your phone’s unused-app settings and exempt that app from pausing if the option is available. See Google’s guidance on managing unused apps.
When should you use Battery Saver?
Battery Saver is a stronger, temporary option for a low charge or a day when charging will be difficult. It may limit background activity and delay some visual effects, features, network connections, or apps. If you rely on immediate background syncing or notifications, those trade-offs may matter.

On Android devices that use Google’s general menu path, open Settings → Battery → Battery Saver. You can choose a schedule or automatic turn-off where those options are offered. The path and available controls vary by manufacturer and version; search Settings for “Battery Saver” or consult the manufacturer’s instructions if the labels differ.
Everyday optimization or Battery Saver?
Everyday optimization is the better starting point if you want to preserve normal use. Battery Saver is more convenient when you need a short-term reserve, but may cause more delays.

This is a practical comparison of Google’s descriptions, not a measured or quantified performance test. Battery Saver’s exact effects depend on the phone.

Which connectivity settings should you switch off?
- Hotspot and tethering: turn them off after connecting another device.
- Location: avoid leaving navigation or other GPS-intensive use running longer than needed. You can turn Location off when it is not needed, but some apps and features will stop working correctly without it.
- Wi-Fi and mobile data: Google advises using Wi-Fi instead of mobile data where appropriate. Airplane mode is an option when you do not need mobile network access.
- Bluetooth: switch it off when you are not using a connected device or accessory.
- Pixel Adaptive connectivity: this is an additional Pixel-specific option, and Google notes that some US carriers may limit it.

Look at battery use by app in your phone’s battery settings, then focus on apps with unusually high use rather than restricting everything at once. On Pixel, Google’s battery guide describes checking app usage and recommends Optimized background use for apps. Other devices may label this screen differently; use Settings search for “Battery usage” or “App battery usage.”
If one app is a frequent drain, consider reducing its background use or changing how often you use a power-intensive feature such as navigation. Restricting an app may delay its notifications or updates, so balance that cost against the battery use you see.

What settings help battery lifespan rather than today’s runtime?
Keeping the phone cool matters for both use and battery health: Google says heat can make the battery drain faster even while the phone is idle and can damage it. Avoid treating charging optimization or an 80% charge limit as a way to get more use from the current charge. On supported Pixel models, those features are intended to extend battery lifespan; Google says the 80% limit is available on Pixel 6a and later. Check your model’s support information for availability.
Google’s Android guidance also says there is no need to repeatedly drain a phone from full to zero to condition its capacity. It recommends occasionally letting the battery go below 10% and then charging fully overnight. That is charging guidance, not a setting that increases the time available from a full charge today.
How to apply these changes when menus differ
- Open Settings and use its search field to look for “screen timeout,” “Adaptive Battery,” “Battery Saver,” or “battery usage.”
- Make display changes first: reduce brightness and choose a shorter timeout that still works for you.
- Check battery use by app. Leave optimization enabled for ordinary apps; adjust only apps whose background activity is causing a problem.
- Use Battery Saver for a low-charge stretch, and set a schedule if your device offers one.
- Turn off hotspot, Bluetooth, or Location only when you do not need the feature.
- If a setting is missing or the path differs, consult support for your exact manufacturer, model, and Android version.
Google’s general advice applies across Android devices only where the relevant feature exists. Pixel guides describe additional controls for supported Pixel models, not a universal Android settings layout.
