What order should I watch Gintama in?
Use release order as a straightforward starting point. It follows the franchise’s rollout without requiring you to reconstruct a detailed chronology. The official anniversary portal records these major releases:

The portal establishes release years, but not exact episode cut points for inserting the earlier films. If your viewing platform or a reliable episode guide gives a placement, you can fit those films into the corresponding release-era portion of the series. Otherwise, keep to the broad release sequence rather than guessing an episode number. The original TV series has 367 episodes and concluded on October 7, 2018, according to the official Gintama 20th Anniversary portal.
Where the 2026 Yoshiwara Flame film fits
New Gintama Theatrical Edition: Yoshiwara Flame is a new adaptation of the Yoshiwara Flame arc, not part of the original TV episode run. Treat it as an optional revisit after you know the story rather than as a replacement for the original arc: the official pages establish the adaptation, but do not provide a beginner placement. Aniplex lists its Blu-ray/DVD release as August 26, 2026; that date refers to the listed home-video release, not a worldwide theatrical date. Check the relevant market’s listing for availability and format details. See the Aniplex release information and the anniversary portal.

Should I watch the anime or read the manga first?
Choose based on how you want to experience the story. The anime adds voices, music, and animated performance; the manga is the original sequential format and lets you set the pace. Neither route requires you to complete the other first. If you want both, you can start with the anime and later read the manga from volume 1, or do the reverse. No one-to-one episode-to-chapter mapping is established by the official catalog pages, so avoid relying on an assumed correspondence to switch back and forth.
| What matters to you | Good starting point |
|---|---|
| You prefer voice acting, music, and animation | Original anime in release order |
| You prefer the original comic format or a self-paced read | Manga volume 1, then continue in volume order |
| You want to experience both formats | Start with either route, then begin the other from its start |
Access can vary by country and edition. Streaming availability was not established by the official sources cited here; check local services. The Shueisha catalog is Japanese, so verify language, print or digital format, and regional availability before choosing a manga edition.

How to read the Gintama manga
Start with collected volume 1 and continue in volume order. Shueisha’s catalog lists print and digital volumes, and the Shonen Jump Gintama page presents the collected series. Shueisha’s volume 20 catalog listing is one example of its volume-level records, not confirmation that every volume is available in every language or territory. Check the edition and local stock before buying.

Gintama moves between comic episodic stories and longer dramatic arcs. The official arc index names major arcs including Benizakura, Yoshiwara Flame, Shogun Assassination, Farewell Shinsengumi, and Silver Soul. Seeing those names can help you recognize when the story turns toward a longer arc, but you do not need to rearrange the series around them: for a first pass, follow the anime’s release order or the manga’s volume order.

The anime is a substantial commitment at 367 TV episodes, while the manga’s practical commitment is easier to pace volume by volume. Both formats tell the larger story, but the material cited here does not provide a complete chapter-to-episode map or an official all-in-one beginner guide to every special. The official franchise timeline supports the broad release milestones, and the official arc index identifies major arcs.
