Follow the model’s manual for exact clearances and orientation; there is no single wall distance that applies to every unit. For ducted or whole-home equipment, placement is part of the HVAC design, not simply a matter of setting the unit in a room.
Where to place a portable dehumidifier
Put the unit in the damp room you want it to serve, on a stable surface where air can circulate through it. Keep the intake and discharge clear of walls, furniture, curtains, and stored items. Because air openings differ by model, use the owner’s manual for required clearances and orientation.
Avoid aiming warm, dry discharge air directly at a nearby side or back wall. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Building America guidance warns that this arrangement can make a standalone unit cycle frequently and operate inefficiently. Read the DOE Building America dehumidification guideline.
Placement for basements and crawlspaces
If the basement or crawlspace is where the moisture problem is, that is generally the area to treat—not an upstairs room that may not exchange air effectively with it. Choose equipment suited to the space and arrange drainage so water can be emptied safely or removed continuously if the model and installation allow it.

The EPA’s Indoor AirPlus Verification Requirements, Version 2 (July 2024) specify supplemental active dehumidification sized to the space for certain below-grade spaces without suitable HVAC humidity control. For the covered buildings and conditions, the document sets a target at or below 60% relative humidity and calls for continuous drainage to the outside or a sump pump. This is a program requirement with a defined scope, not a universal rule for every home or jurisdiction.
Measure humidity in the space you are trying to control. EPA recommends monitoring the main living area and advises a sensor in the basement or crawlspace when those spaces are conditioned by whole-home dehumidification or HVAC. A digital hygrometer can help you check whether the lower level is actually improving.

Can you put a dehumidifier in a closet?
Only treat a closet as a placement option when the unit and the closet are designed to provide adequate airflow. For a standalone dehumidifier in a louvered mechanical closet, the DOE guide says to point the discharge toward the louvered door so air can pass through it. In the specific design described, it also places the closet near the central system’s return-air grille. That guidance is not a general recommendation to conceal a portable unit in an ordinary closet.
Placement for ducted or whole-home dehumidifiers
Ducted equipment needs an installer to plan airflow through the home. Keep inlet and outlet grilles far enough apart to prevent the unit from drawing its own treated air back in, a problem known as short-circuiting. Position supply air so it does not make occupants uncomfortable or distort temperature readings near a thermostat or dehumidistat.

Integrated ducted equipment also needs suitable duct connections and backflow control. Follow the equipment instructions and use a qualified HVAC professional for installation rather than applying portable-unit placement advice to a connected system. The EPA’s Moisture Control Guidance for Building Design, Construction and Maintenance provides broader building moisture-control context.
How to choose a humidity target and monitor the result
EPA’s Indoor AirPlus Version 2 gives 40%–60% indoor relative humidity as an advisory range for most of the year. The DOE Building America guide discusses settings of about 60% RH in summer and 50%–55% outside the regular cooling season for its supplemental-dehumidification context. These are guidance for their stated contexts, not one mandatory setting for every home. Use a humidity reading from the space being treated and follow the dehumidifier’s controls and manual.

Should you open windows while running a dehumidifier?
Not automatically. Opening a window helps remove indoor moisture only when the outdoor air has a lower dew point than the indoor air. If replacement air is more humid, ventilation can add moisture and make the dehumidifier work harder. The U.S. Department of Energy explains this condition in its Consumer Dehumidifiers guidance.
