Windows Snipping Tool screenshots normally go to the Screenshots folder, Mac screenshots go to the desktop, and Chromebook screenshots go to Downloads. Those are defaults, not guarantees: each built-in capture tool can use a different destination, and a capture copied to the clipboard may not have been saved as a file at all.

Computer Default location Where to check or change it
Windows (Snipping Tool) Screenshots folder Snipping Tool > See more (…) > Settings
Mac (Screenshot) Desktop Shift-Command-5 > Options
Chromebook (ChromeOS) Downloads Screen Capture > Settings > Select folder

Use the section for your operating system first. If the image is not there, search by date, inspect the capture app’s save setting, and determine whether you only copied the image rather than saving it.

Windows: look in the Screenshots folder

Microsoft’s current Snipping Tool guidance says a completed snip is automatically saved in your Screenshots folder. In File Explorer, open your user folder, then Pictures > Screenshots. The exact path is normally under your Windows user profile, but the folder can be moved.

Capture with Windows+Shift+S

  1. Press Windows key + Shift + S.
  2. Choose the capture mode in the bar at the top: rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen selection.
  3. Make the selection. Windows copies the result to the clipboard and shows a notification.
  4. Select the notification to open the image in Snipping Tool. The editor also provides Save as if you want to choose a filename and folder yourself.

The automatic file and the clipboard copy are separate things. You can paste the capture into an app even when you have not created a permanent image file.

Check or change Windows’ automatic-save destination

  1. Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
  2. Select See more (…) > Settings.
  3. Review the automatic-save option and the configured Screenshots folder.
  4. If you want a different location, change the setting, then make a new capture to verify it.

For one-off placement, open the snip, select Save as, choose a folder, enter a filename, and confirm the save. This is the most reliable method when you need the file in a project folder, cloud-synced directory, or removable drive.

If Windows saved the image somewhere else

  • Open File Explorer and search for recently modified image files, then sort results by Date modified.
  • Check the Snipping Tool setting rather than assuming the default Screenshots folder is still active.
  • Look at the notification workflow: if you only pressed a shortcut and pasted elsewhere, there may be no file to find.
  • Check any folder you selected in a previous Save as dialog.

Mac: check the desktop first

Apple’s Screenshot app saves screenshots to the desktop by default. The standard filename begins with Screen Shot and includes the date and time, making Finder searches straightforward.

Take a screenshot and identify its destination

  1. Press Shift-Command-5, or open Applications > Utilities > Screenshot.
  2. Choose full screen, a window, or a selected portion.
  3. Capture the screen. Unless you changed the destination, the file appears on the desktop.
  4. Use Finder’s desktop view and sort by date if several files have similar names.

Change where future Mac screenshots are saved

  1. Press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot controls.
  2. Select Options.
  3. Choose a listed destination, such as Desktop, Documents, or Downloads, or select another location when offered.
  4. Capture another image and confirm that it arrives in the selected folder.

A floating thumbnail may appear briefly after capture. You can drag that thumbnail to another location. You can also Control-click it to copy the image to the clipboard instead of keeping it as a file in the default destination.

Search for a missing Mac screenshot

  • Search Finder for Screen Shot, then sort by creation or modification date.
  • Inspect Screenshot’s Options menu; the destination may have been changed previously.
  • Check whether you dragged the thumbnail to a different folder.
  • If you used the clipboard option, paste into Preview, Messages, or an image editor and save a file from there.

Chromebook: open Downloads

Google’s ChromeOS guidance says screenshots and screen recordings are saved to Downloads by default. Open the Files app and select Downloads in the left sidebar.

Capture with Screen Capture

  1. Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. The Show windows key is the Chromebook key with a rectangle and two vertical lines.
  2. Choose a full-screen, partial-screen, or window capture.
  3. Complete the selection. The resulting image is written to Downloads unless you selected another folder.

Change the Chromebook destination

  1. Open the Screen Capture controls with Shift + Ctrl + Show windows.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Choose Select folder.
  4. Pick the destination for future screenshots and recordings.

Use the Files app’s search and date sorting if Downloads contains many files. If you changed the folder, inspect that location rather than relying on Downloads.

A reliable way to find a missing screenshot

  1. Identify the operating system. Windows, macOS, and ChromeOS use different defaults.
  2. Check the documented default. Start with Windows’ Screenshots folder, the Mac desktop, or Chromebook Downloads.
  3. Search by filename and date. Search for likely image files; on Mac, begin with “Screen Shot.” Sort by Date modified or creation date around the time you captured the image.
  4. Inspect the capture tool’s settings. Windows uses Snipping Tool’s See more (…) > Settings, Mac uses Screenshot’s Options menu, and Chromebook uses Screen Capture > Settings > Select folder.
  5. Distinguish a clipboard copy from a saved file. Pasting proves that an image is in memory, not that a file exists. Save it from the app where you pasted it.
  6. Check a manual save location. A previous Save as action, a dragged thumbnail, or a project-specific folder may be the actual destination.

What changes the answer

The capture method

The locations above describe the built-in tools named by Microsoft, Apple, and Google. A different capture method can use its own folder or produce only a clipboard image. Treat the app that performed the capture as the source of truth.

Automatic saving versus explicit saving

Automatic saving uses the destination configured in the tool. Explicit commands such as Windows’ Save as let you override that destination for one image. On Mac, dragging the floating thumbnail similarly creates a deliberate move.

Images versus recordings

ChromeOS documents screenshots and recordings together under its capture workflow, but the destination can still be changed through Screen Capture settings. If you are looking for a recording, search the same configured folder and filter by the video file type.

Troubleshooting by symptom

“I can paste the screenshot, but there is no file.”

The capture is probably on the clipboard only. Paste it into an image-capable app, then use that app’s Save command. On Windows, open the Snipping Tool notification and choose Save as; on Mac, use the thumbnail or paste into an app and save.

“The default folder is empty.”

Open the screenshot tool’s settings and verify the destination. Then search the computer for files modified at the capture time. A changed folder or a one-time Save as location explains most cases.

“I found an old screenshot, but not the latest one.”

Sort by modification date, not name. Confirm that the capture actually completed and that you did not dismiss the notification before saving. Make a test capture and note the folder shown by the tool.

“The shortcut did nothing.”

Use the operating system’s exact shortcut: Windows+Shift+S for Snipping Tool, Shift-Command-5 for Mac Screenshot, or Shift+Ctrl+Show windows for ChromeOS. On a Chromebook, ensure you are pressing the dedicated Show windows key, not a similarly shaped browser key.

“The screenshot is in the wrong project folder.”

Use an explicit save or move operation. Windows’ Save as, Mac’s thumbnail drag, and the Files or Finder app all let you place a copy where your project expects it. Changing a default affects future captures; it does not automatically organize every existing image.

If you need a repeatable screenshot of a web page rather than a picture of your desktop, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one request. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers.

It also provides an MCP server for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients, with tools for screenshots, page information, and PDFs. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do these folders apply to screenshots made by every app?

No. The documented defaults apply to Windows Snipping Tool, macOS Screenshot, and ChromeOS Screen Capture. Browser extensions, graphics tools, messaging apps, and other utilities may use their own folders or only copy an image to the clipboard.

Can I use a cloud folder as the screenshot destination?

If the operating system’s destination picker exposes that synced folder, select it in the tool’s settings or save dialog. Otherwise, save locally first and move the file with Finder, File Explorer, or the Files app.

Why does a screenshot have a different file type than expected?

The file type depends on the operating system or app that created it and any export choice you made. Check the file extension and use an image editor’s Export or Save as command when a particular format is required.
