After identifying a Pokémon card, record its exact printing before looking up a price or legality. The Pokémon name alone is not enough: card number, set, language, rarity, foil treatment, promo status and condition can describe entirely different market items.
Use two references for value. TCGplayer provides a marketplace-oriented Market Price with condition context, while PriceCharting adds set checklists, image and card-number search, ungraded and graded views, and historical charts. Then check the regulation mark and current Play! Pokémon rules separately, because collectible value and tournament legality are different questions.
Start with an exact identity record
Before opening a price guide, write down every detail that distinguishes your copy from other printings. A useful record contains:
- Pokémon name: transcribe the name exactly, including punctuation or alternate forms.
- Collector number: copy the number and denominator, such as
123/198. Promos and special products may use a different numbering style. - Set name or symbol: record the printed set name when available and the symbol used on the card.
- Language: English, Japanese and other language versions are separate market items.
- Rarity: note the rarity symbol or printed rarity designation.
- Variant or treatment: distinguish regular, holo, reverse holo, promo, 1st Edition, shadowless, Poké Ball pattern, Master Ball pattern and other special treatments.
- Condition: describe surface scratches, whitening, dents, bends, centering, print lines and altered edges.
- Regulation mark: photograph or transcribe the letter at the bottom left if you are checking tournament legality.
Photograph the front and back when text, a set symbol or a regulation mark is difficult to read. Keep the images with your notes. This prevents a common error: finding the right character but the wrong set, language or variant.

Confirm the set and exact printing
Search by number before relying on artwork
Artwork and Pokémon names are useful starting points, but the collector number is usually the fastest way to separate similar cards. Search the number together with the set, then compare the result with your card’s artwork, rarity symbol and treatment. PriceCharting’s Pokémon guide supports searches by card name, card number, set and image, and provides set checklists for checking whether a card belongs to a particular release.
Look for printing details that change the market
The same character can have many printings with very different prices. Check for 1st Edition or shadowless markings, a promo designation, and pattern-specific foiling such as Poké Ball or Master Ball treatments. A regular version and a reverse-holo version may share a name and number family while trading as different items. Do not substitute a visually similar listing merely because the Pokémon and attack text match.
Separate set identity from release product
A card may have been distributed in a booster set, a deck, a boxed product or a promotional event. Record the set or product designation shown by the card and the checklist entry, rather than assuming the product you found it in is the set name. If the card number, symbol and artwork do not align with a checklist result, stop and resolve that mismatch before recording a value.

Use Market Price as a market-oriented reference
TCGplayer’s pricing tools include Market Price, card-identification help and condition guidance. Search the exact card, language and variant, then record the condition category shown for the result. Market Price is useful for understanding a liquid marketplace reference, but it is not a guaranteed sale price for your individual copy.

Match condition and language
Do not combine Near Mint, Lightly Played and damaged copies into one estimate. English and Japanese results can represent different supply, demand and print runs. If the page offers several variants, select the foil treatment or promo version that matches your identity record. Write down the date checked and the currency displayed so a later reader can tell what the number meant at that time.
Interpret listings carefully
A displayed listing price is an asking price, not automatically a realized sale price. Shipping, seller reputation, quantity and condition can affect whether a listing represents a realistic transaction. Compare multiple like-for-like copies and treat the Market Price as context rather than an appraisal of a particular card.
Cross-check with PriceCharting
Use its guide and set tools to catch mismatches
PriceCharting’s Pokémon guide can show current values and help identify a card through name, number, set or image. Its set checklists are useful when a card’s symbol is unclear or when several releases use similar artwork. Confirm that the page’s image, collector number and treatment match your copy before using any figure.

PriceCharting separates ungraded values from grade-specific views, including PSA and BGS categories where available, and provides historical price charts. Use the ungraded figure for a raw card and the appropriate graded view only when your card has actually been professionally graded at that level. Historical charts can reveal an unusual spike or decline that a single current number hides.

Use differences as a diagnostic signal
If TCGplayer and PriceCharting disagree, first check identity, language, variant and condition again. The services answer related but different questions: TCGplayer is oriented toward marketplace pricing and condition-aware comparisons, while PriceCharting combines guide values, grade views and historical data. Neither source supplies one universal value for every copy. Record both figures, their dates and the assumptions behind them instead of averaging them blindly.

Assess condition without overstating the result
Inspect the front and back under strong light
Look for surface scratches, whitening along edges, dents, bends, print lines, centering problems and evidence of altered edges. A card that appears clean in a sleeve can show dents or foil scratches when held at an angle. Record defects rather than choosing a higher condition category because the card looks attractive from a distance.
Keep raw and graded claims separate
A raw estimate describes an ungraded card. A professionally graded estimate describes a card that has been authenticated and assigned a specific grade. Do not apply a grade premium to an ungraded copy, and do not assume that a visually clean card will receive a particular grade. If you mention a graded comparison, state the grading company category, grade and source view used.

When centering or a print line is difficult to judge, describe the uncertainty and use a conservative condition band. Save close-up photographs of corners, edges and holographic surfaces. This makes a later recheck possible if a buyer or grader interprets the condition differently.

Check tournament legality separately from value
Read the regulation mark
Regulation marks are letters printed at the bottom left of Pokémon cards beginning in 2020. The mark is the starting point for Standard legality, but the current format rules and release timing still control whether a card may be used at a particular event.
Apply the 2026 Standard rotation
The Pokémon Company’s 2026 Pokémon TCG Standard Format Rotation Announcement, published January 9, 2026, states: “A card’s legality status is not based on which expansion it’s from.” For the 2026 rotation, cards with the G regulation mark leave Standard, while cards with H, I and J marks remain legal subject to the announcement’s rules and release timing. The in-person Play! Pokémon Standard rotation takes effect April 10, 2026; Pokémon TCG Live applies it March 26, 2026.
Account for reprint exceptions
An older physical printing can remain usable when a current-mark reprint exists. The 2026 announcement gives Rare Candy and Boss’s Orders as examples. Therefore, do not reject an older-looking copy solely because its own mark is outside the current range; verify whether the card name and text are covered by a legal current-mark reprint and whether any errata applies.

Check the event format and waiting period
Standard is only one format. Expanded and other sanctioned formats can use different legality lists. Confirm the format named by the event organizer, then consult the current Play! Pokémon rules hub, tournament handbook and errata resources. A newly released expansion may also have to pass a tournament waiting period before its cards can be used. The exact waiting period and effective date should be checked in the current official event information rather than inferred from the product’s retail release.

What to save with your result
Create a record that another person can reproduce:
- Exact Pokémon name, collector number, set, language, rarity and variant.
- Condition description, photographs and whether the card is raw or graded.
- TCGplayer Market Price, condition category, currency and date checked.
- PriceCharting page, ungraded or graded view, historical observation and date checked.
- Regulation mark, intended format, event date and the official legality decision.
- Any reprint or errata explanation used to justify legality.
Prices and rotation status change. Recheck both before publishing a price, listing a card for sale or entering an event. Preserve the date with every number so an old snapshot is not mistaken for a current quote.
Common mistakes and fixes
“I searched the Pokémon name and used the first result.”
Fix: Search by collector number and set, then verify artwork, rarity, language and foil treatment. Name-only searches commonly merge multiple printings.
“The highest listing is what my card is worth.”
Fix: Compare like-for-like condition and variant across several listings and both references. An asking price is not a completed transaction.

Fix: Read the regulation mark and check for a current-mark reprint. Legality is not determined solely by expansion identity.
“A graded chart tells me the value of my raw card.”
Fix: Use the ungraded view for a raw copy and reserve grade-specific figures for cards actually authenticated and graded at that level.
“It was legal last season, so it is legal now.”
Fix: Recheck the current format, date, rotation announcement and release waiting period immediately before an event.
