As of October 20, 2026, there are four legal ways to play The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time: buy an authentic Nintendo 64 cartridge, use the Nintendo 64 library included with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, buy an authentic Ocarina of Time 3D cartridge for Nintendo 3DS, or purchase Nintendo’s Switch 2 release when it becomes available on November 5, 2026.
The right choice depends on which version you want, the hardware you already own, and whether you prefer a permanent cartridge or subscription access. Used cartridges require authenticity checks; Nintendo 3DS digital purchases are closed to new buyers; and Switch 2 format and stock details must be verified in your country.

Nintendo’s official game information distinguishes the original Nintendo 64 edition from the Nintendo 3DS remake. A cartridge advertised simply as “Ocarina of Time” is not automatically the same product as Ocarina of Time 3D, so confirm the platform and edition before paying.

The Nintendo 64 cartridge is the original release. Nintendo does not currently sell a new Nintendo 64 cartridge through its own store, making the legitimate physical route the used-game market. You need the cartridge, an original Nintendo 64 console, and a working controller and power connection.

What to look for in a seller
- Clear, high-resolution photographs of the front, back, and connector edge of the exact cartridge.
- A stated return period if the game fails to boot or proves inauthentic.
- Seller feedback that specifically mentions cartridge authenticity and testing, not just shipping speed.
- A description of cleaning or testing procedures, without treating a generic “reproduction” or “fan-made” label as an authentic Nintendo release.
- A price that is plausible for a used game. An unusually cheap listing deserves more scrutiny, especially when the seller uses stock photos.
Authenticity checks after delivery
- Compare the cartridge shell, label, screw layout, molding details, and regional markings with documented examples of genuine Nintendo 64 cartridges.
- Inspect the board and chips only if you know how to open the cartridge safely; do not force screws or damage the shell while checking it.
- Clean the connector contacts with an appropriate cartridge-cleaning method and test the game in a known-working Nintendo 64.
- Confirm that the game boots consistently, saves correctly when applicable, and does not reset when the cartridge is gently touched.
- Keep the packaging and transaction record until you have completed testing. Use the seller’s return process if the cartridge does not match the listing.
Red flags that indicate an unauthorized reproduction
- The listing calls the item a “repro,” “reproduction,” “bootleg,” “multicart,” or “fan translation.”
- The label artwork is blurry, misspelled, cropped differently from known regional packaging, or identical across many unrelated listings.
- The seller refuses to show the actual item or will not accept returns.
- The cartridge contains a modern flash-storage board or menu of multiple games while being advertised as a single original release.
Unauthorized reproductions and downloaded ROMs are not substitutes for an authentic Nintendo release. If you want the original version on original hardware, buy a cartridge whose identity and condition you can verify.
Playing it through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack
The official Switch-family route is the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online library. Nintendo Support states that an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership is required to access that classic-game library. This is subscription access, not a separately purchased Switch game.
Cost and what the price means
Nintendo’s U.S. support pricing table showed $49.99 USD for a 12-month individual Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack plan when checked in 2026. That figure is for the U.S. individual annual plan at that time; family plans, shorter terms, taxes, promotions, and prices in other countries can differ. Nintendo can also change pricing and catalog availability.
How to use this option
- Check that your Nintendo Account is signed in on a supported Nintendo Switch-family console.
- Purchase or renew Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack through Nintendo’s account or eShop flow for your region.
- Open the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online application from the console’s software library. If it is not installed, download it through the Nintendo Switch Online membership area.
- Locate Ocarina of Time in the available Nintendo 64 catalog and start the game.
- Keep the membership active for continued access. If the subscription expires, the classic-game application may remain installed, but subscription-gated play is no longer available.
Important regional and platform limits
Classic-game catalogs and prices are region-dependent and can change. A title shown in one country is not a guarantee that the same title, version, language options, or service price appears in another. Check the catalog attached to your Nintendo Account’s country before subscribing solely for this game.

This path is best for players who already own a supported Switch-family system and want convenient digital access without sourcing a vintage cartridge. It is less suitable if you require a collectible item or permanent access independent of a subscription.
Buying Ocarina of Time 3D for Nintendo 3DS
Ocarina of Time 3D is a distinct Nintendo 3DS remake, not merely the Nintendo 64 cartridge in a different box. It is the choice for players who want the handheld version and its stereoscopic presentation on Nintendo 3DS hardware.
Why digital purchase is no longer available to new buyers
Nintendo stopped accepting new software and downloadable-content purchases for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family eShops at 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time on March 27, 2023. Nintendo says previously purchased games and downloadable content can still be redownloaded for the foreseeable future and that software updates remain available. That redownload policy helps existing owners; it does not reopen the store for someone who never bought the digital edition.
The practical legal route today
If you did not already purchase the digital version, look for a legitimate physical cartridge. Before ordering, verify the region printed on the cartridge and listing, because Nintendo 3DS software and downloadable features can have regional restrictions. Confirm that the cartridge is for Ocarina of Time 3D, not the original Nintendo 64 game or an unrelated Zelda title.

- Check for a return policy covering unreadable or counterfeit cartridges.
- Inspect the contacts for corrosion and the shell for cracks or tampering.
- Test the cartridge in a compatible 3DS-family system and verify that it starts reliably.
- Keep in mind that a cartridge may be sold without its original case or manual; missing packaging affects collectability, not whether the game itself is the correct edition.
A used 3DS cartridge is a physical resale purchase. Nintendo does not control the condition, region, or authenticity of individual marketplace listings, so those details must be established by the seller and checked by you.
Waiting for the Nintendo Switch 2 release
Nintendo’s official Switch 2 listing gives The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time an availability date of November 5, 2026 and identifies the release as exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2. This is the newest official path, but its practical buying details depend on your country and the edition offered there.
What to verify before ordering
- Confirm that the product page is for the Switch 2 game, not a Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online membership or a 3DS cartridge.
- Check whether your country lists a physical edition, a digital edition, or preorder-only stock.
- Read the listed release date and delivery estimate separately. A preorder page can accept orders before inventory is ready.
- Confirm that the game requires Switch 2 rather than an original Switch console.
- Review the edition description, language support, and any local age or distribution information before payment.
A Zelda-themed Switch 2 hardware package, if advertised, does not by itself prove that the game is bundled. Treat the direct game listing as the authority on what is included. If the listing does not state a bundle, do not assume one.

Choose the N64 cartridge if you value original hardware
Select the cartridge when you already own a Nintendo 64, want the original release, collect physical games, or need access that does not depend on a current online membership. Your main risks are counterfeit stock, worn connectors, and a seller who will not accept returns.

Choose Switch Online + Expansion Pack for the simplest current access
This is the most straightforward route for a Switch owner who accepts subscription access and whose regional catalog includes the game. It avoids hunting for vintage hardware and lets you play through the supported Nintendo 64 application, but access depends on an active membership and a changing service catalog.
Choose the 3DS cartridge for the remake and handheld play
Buy the 3DS version when the remake’s handheld format and stereoscopic presentation matter more than having the original Nintendo 64 edition. Because the 3DS eShop no longer accepts new purchases, physical resale is the normal route for new buyers.
Choose Switch 2 when you want the new release
Switch 2 is the forward-looking choice if you already plan to own that console and can wait until the listed November 5, 2026 availability date. Verify your country’s product format and preorder status rather than relying on listings from another region.

Mistake: treating a Switch Online subscription as a permanent purchase
Fix: budget for an active Expansion Pack membership and confirm the title remains in your regional catalog.
Mistake: expecting to buy the 3DS digital edition today
Fix: Nintendo’s new-purchase cutoff was March 27, 2023. Use a physical cartridge unless the game was already purchased on your Nintendo Account and is available for redownload.
