Where does Snipping Tool save screenshots?
Microsoft’s Windows 11 instructions say a captured snip is automatically saved to the Screenshots folder. The support page does not specify the folder’s full filesystem path, so check Snipping Tool’s Settings to see or change the configured location rather than assuming a particular drive or user folder.
Windows 10 is documented differently: Microsoft’s instructions describe selecting Save Snip and specifying a location, filename, and file type. The Windows 11 automatic-save behavior should not be assumed for every Windows 10 installation.
How to change Snipping Tool’s default save location
- Open Snipping Tool from Start.
- In the app window, select See More (the three-dot menu), then select Settings.
- In Settings, adjust the automatic-save behavior or default Screenshots folder.
Microsoft confirms this Settings route but does not document the exact control labels, which may vary as the app is updated.

How to save one snip to a different location
Open the captured snip, select Save as, then choose the destination and filename. This saves an additional copy at the location you select; use Settings when you want to change the default for future captures.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 instructions differ
Microsoft’s support page covers both operating systems, but describes different workflows: Windows 11 captures automatically save to the Screenshots folder, with the folder and automatic-save behavior adjustable in Settings; the Windows 10 instructions describe manually saving a snip by choosing its location, filename, and type. Follow the workflow shown in your version of Snipping Tool.
