There is no universal Sleep-key location—and some keyboards do not have a dedicated Sleep key at all. Check the top row and any special-key cluster for a sleep, moon, or crescent symbol. If a possible sleep command is printed as a secondary function, it may require Fn or a function-lock setting. The exact key depends on your keyboard and computer model.
How to check whether your keyboard has a Sleep key
- Scan the top row and special-key cluster. Look for a key labeled Sleep or marked with a moon or crescent symbol. Symbols vary by manufacturer, so the mark is a clue rather than a universal standard.
- Check for a secondary command. If the sleep symbol appears alongside another legend, try the key with Fn only if your keyboard’s instructions indicate that the alternate command uses Fn. On supported Microsoft keyboards, Fn or F Lock can switch between standard and alternate commands; see Microsoft’s Fn and F Lock guidance.
- Find the exact model. Key layouts and functions differ even within a product family. Microsoft notes that Surface keyboard and Type Cover keys vary by model in its guide to Surface special and function keys. Consult the support page or manual for your exact keyboard or computer.
What if there is no Sleep key?
Use your operating system’s power controls instead. On Windows, open Start, select Power, then choose Sleep. You can also configure what pressing the PC’s power button or closing a laptop lid does: Microsoft’s shutdown, sleep, and hibernate instructions explain those settings. The available behavior can vary by PC; if the button or lid acts differently than expected, check the computer maker’s documentation.
Does a Microsoft or Surface keyboard have a Sleep key?
Do not assume it does. Microsoft’s Surface Keyboard special-key guide lists its documented functions, including media, brightness, search, settings, screenshot, and lock controls, but does not identify a dedicated Sleep command. That list is for the named model, not every Surface keyboard or Type Cover. Check the documentation for the precise model you own.
What to know about Mac keyboards
Apple’s sleep shortcuts are configuration-specific, not evidence that every Mac or external keyboard has a separate Sleep key. For a built-in keyboard without Touch ID, Apple documents holding the power button for 1.5 seconds or pressing Option–Command–Power to put the Mac to sleep. Mac function-row behavior can also depend on settings: top-row keys may control Mac features or act as standard function keys. Apple explains the options in its function-key guidance and directs users to the keyboard maker for third-party keyboard functions. Check the instructions for your specific Mac and keyboard before relying on a shortcut.
