Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOn XAMPP for Linux, start with /opt/lampp/logs/error_log. On a typical CentOS 6 Apache server, start with /var/log/httpd/error_log. Those are useful defaults—not guaranteed PHP log locations: PHP’s error_log setting or Apache’s ErrorLog directive can send messages elsewhere.
Default log locations by platform
| Platform | Where to check first | What determines the PHP log destination |
|---|---|---|
| XAMPP for Linux | /opt/lampp/logs/error_log |
Apache’s error log; PHP errors can appear here when PHP sends them through Apache’s SAPI logger. Apache Friends’ Linux FAQ |
| XAMPP for Windows | Find php.ini under the XAMPP directory, normally xamppphpphp.ini, and inspect Apache’s error log. |
The active PHP error_log and Apache ErrorLog settings determine the destination; it can vary by installation. Apache Friends’ Windows FAQ |
| CentOS 6 with Apache | /var/log/httpd/error_log |
This is the documented Apache default. PHP errors may appear there if PHP uses Apache’s SAPI logger and no separate PHP log file is configured. CentOS Vault |
For PHP’s general logging behavior and Apache’s ErrorLog directive, see the PHP error-handling configuration manual and Apache’s log files documentation.
How to find the active PHP log destination
-
Check the PHP configuration used by the web server
Inspect the
php.iniloaded by Apache or the relevant web-server PHP handler. Do not assume the configuration shown by command-line PHP is the same. Checklog_errorsanderror_log. Iferror_lognames a file, PHP is configured to write there, provided the web-server process can write to it. -
If PHP has no separate file, check Apache’s error log
When PHP’s
error_logis unset, the destination depends on the SAPI. For a browser request, PHP may send errors to Apache’s error log; command-line PHP may instead write to standard error. That is why a message can appear in one context but not the other.Recommended: PC Feels Slow? Find Apache’s effective
ErrorLogInspect the main Apache configuration and any virtual-host configuration that applies to the site. A virtual host can have its own error log, so the global default may not be the file receiving that site’s messages.
-
Resolve relative paths and verify access
A relative PHP
error_logpath is resolved relative to the document root. A relative ApacheErrorLogpath is resolved relative toServerRoot. Confirm the resulting full path and check that the web-server process has permission to write to the file.Rank #2

Watch the log while reproducing the error
For XAMPP on Linux, Apache Friends suggests this quick check:
tail -2 /opt/lampp/logs/error_log
For CentOS, substitute the path found in the active Apache ErrorLog setting; if it has not been changed, the documented default is /var/log/httpd/error_log. Keep the command running while you reproduce the browser issue to see whether new entries arrive.

If the expected file stays empty
- Confirm that
log_errorsis enabled in the PHP configuration used by the web server. - Check whether PHP’s
error_logexplicitly names a different file. - Review Apache’s active
ErrorLog, including virtual-host settings. - Verify the resolved file path and write permissions for the web-server process.
- Reproduce the problem through the same route that fails: browser requests and CLI runs can use different PHP configurations and logging destinations.
