On a Dell laptop running Windows, start in File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots. That is the documented default location for captures made with Snipping Tool. If your Pictures folder is backed up by OneDrive, browse the corresponding OneDrive > Pictures > Screenshots location as well.
The capture method matters. A standalone Print Screen press may have copied the image only to the clipboard, so no file exists until you paste it into Paint or another app and save it. Dell does not have a separate, universal screenshot folder; Snipping Tool settings, redirected folders and OneDrive backup can change what you see.
Which location should you check first?

This distinction explains most “missing screenshot” reports: sometimes you are looking in the wrong folder, and sometimes there is no file to find yet.
Find a Snipping Tool capture
Open the standard folder
- Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
- Select Pictures in the navigation pane.
- Open Screenshots.
- Sort the folder by Date modified to put the newest capture at the top.
Under Snipping Tool’s documented default behavior, a completed snip is saved automatically in that folder. The exact file name and image format can vary, so use the date and thumbnail rather than relying on a particular name.

Check Snipping Tool’s save settings
Snipping Tool lets you change automatic-save behavior and the default Screenshots folder. If the standard folder is empty, open Snipping Tool, open its Settings, and inspect the automatic-save and folder options. A capture can also be written somewhere else deliberately with Save as in the editor.
If you recently changed the destination, the new setting affects where later captures go; older files remain where they were previously saved unless you move them yourself. When in doubt, use the folder shown in Snipping Tool’s current settings rather than assuming the Windows default.
When Windows + Shift + S was used
Windows logo key + Shift + S opens the Snipping Tool capture overlay. Select the area or mode, take the snip, and follow the notification or editor that appears. Depending on your settings, you may need to save from the editor, or the capture may already have been saved automatically.
- Take the snip with Windows + Shift + S.
- Select the notification if it appears to open the capture in Snipping Tool.
- Use Save or Save as if you want to choose a known folder.
- If you dismissed the notification, inspect Snipping Tool’s Settings and search the Pictures and OneDrive locations described below.
Why Print Screen may not produce a file
Pressing Print Screen alone copies an image of the screen to the clipboard. Clipboard content is temporary and is not the same as a saved PNG, JPEG or WebP file. Until you paste and save it, File Explorer has nothing to locate.

- Press Print Screen.
- Open Paint or another image-editing application.
- Press Ctrl+V to paste the clipboard image.
- Choose File > Save or Save as, select a folder, name the file and confirm the format.
If you copied something else after taking the screenshot, the clipboard may no longer contain the image. Take the capture again and paste it immediately.
How OneDrive changes what you see
Use Pictures folder backup, not an old screenshot switch
Microsoft’s current guidance says the dedicated “Save screenshots to OneDrive” setting is no longer available. The supported way to back up screenshots saved in Pictures is to include the Pictures folder in OneDrive folder backup.
When Pictures is backed up, File Explorer may show the same content through a OneDrive location. Browse the OneDrive entry, open Pictures, and then open Screenshots if that folder exists. Do not assume every Windows installation sends captures directly to a special OneDrive screenshot folder.
Work and school accounts
An administrator can disable or restrict folder protection for a work or school account. If OneDrive is unavailable or the backup setting cannot be changed, check the local Pictures folder and the account’s OneDrive status separately. The absence of a OneDrive copy does not prove that the local screenshot was never saved.

Search the entire laptop when the folder is unclear
- Open File Explorer.
- Choose This PC to search local storage, or choose the OneDrive location to search synced files.
- Use the search box to look for likely image files, such as .png, .jpg or .webp.
- Sort the results by Date modified and inspect files created around the time of the capture.
- Open a candidate to confirm its contents, then use Open file location if you need the exact folder.
Searching both This PC and OneDrive matters when Pictures has been redirected or backed up. File Explorer’s search can cover locations on the computer and in OneDrive, but a file that was never saved cannot appear in results.
Troubleshoot the common failure cases
The Screenshots folder does not exist
Take a new Snipping Tool capture and let it finish. Then check Snipping Tool’s Settings for its current save destination. You can also create a folder yourself when using Save as; the absence of a pre-existing folder is not evidence of a Dell hardware problem.
The folder exists but is empty
Confirm which method you used. A Print Screen capture may still be in the clipboard, while a Snipping Tool capture may have been saved to a customized folder. Search by date and image extension, and inspect both local Pictures and the OneDrive-backed Pictures location.
You saw a notification but cannot find it now
The notification is only a shortcut to the capture workflow. Open Snipping Tool directly, review its Settings, and search the likely folders. If automatic saving was disabled, repeat the capture and use Save as to choose a known destination.

OneDrive shows a different Pictures path
Follow the path displayed in File Explorer rather than typing a presumed local path. Folder backup can change how Pictures is presented. If an organization manages the device, ask whether folder protection is restricted.
You need the image immediately but are unsure whether it saved
Use Print Screen again, paste into Paint, and save to a folder you can identify, such as Documents. This creates a definite file without relying on automatic-save settings.
Prevent future screenshot confusion
- After an important snip, open it in Snipping Tool and use Save as to select a project-specific folder.
- Review Snipping Tool’s automatic-save destination after Windows or application setting changes.
- If you rely on cloud backup, verify that OneDrive folder backup includes Pictures and that your account is allowed to use it.
- For Print Screen, paste and save immediately instead of leaving the image only on the clipboard.
- Use descriptive names or date-based folders when collecting many captures.

FAQ
Is there a Dell-specific screenshot folder?
Windows capture behavior, not the Dell model name, determines the destination. Use the capture method and folder settings to find the file.
Can I find a screenshot that was never saved?
No. If Print Screen only placed the image on the clipboard and it has since been replaced, there is no file for File Explorer to recover. Capture again and paste it into an app before saving.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does changing from a local Microsoft account to a work or school account change the screenshot shortcut?
The shortcut still opens the Windows capture tools, but an organization may restrict OneDrive folder backup. Check the account’s Snipping Tool and OneDrive settings on that device.
Why does a screenshot appear on one Dell laptop but not another?
Different Snipping Tool save settings, Pictures redirection or OneDrive backup configuration can produce different destinations even when both computers run Windows.
