Chrome does not use one universal screenshot folder. The location depends on how the image was created: a desktop download or saved webpage image usually appears in Chrome’s Downloads location, a Chromebook capture goes to Downloads (unless you changed Screen Capture settings), an iPhone or iPad save goes to the Files, Drive or Photos destination you selected, and a Chrome Headless capture is written to the command’s current working directory.

First identify how the screenshot was made

The word “screenshot” covers several different actions. Chrome’s download settings control files saved through the browser; they do not control every screenshot made by Windows, macOS, Linux, Android or iOS. Use this quick map before searching:

Capture method Where to look first What can change the location
Desktop Chrome download or saved webpage image Chrome’s Downloads page and configured download folder A changed default folder or the “Ask where to save each file before downloading” option
Chromebook Screen Capture Downloads by default The folder selected in Screen Capture settings
Android Chrome save Chrome > Downloads, then the device’s Files app The device and destination chosen when saving
iPhone or iPad Chrome save Chrome > Downloads, Files, Google Drive or Photos Whether you saved it as a file or image and which destination you selected
Chrome Headless --screenshot The process’s current working directory The directory from which the command was run
Operating-system screenshot shortcut Your operating system’s screenshot or photo-management workflow OS version, account settings and the capture tool used

Windows, Mac and Linux desktop Chrome

Find a recent saved image from Chrome

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Open the three-dot More menu and choose Downloads. You can also open the Downloads page with Chrome’s download shortcut.
  3. Find the image or file. Point to it and choose Show in folder (the wording may appear as the equivalent file-location command on your system).

This is the fastest route because Chrome records the actual destination for a recent download, even if you no longer remember which folder was selected.

Check the default download folders

If you did not change Chrome’s setting, Google Chrome Help documents these desktop defaults:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Windows 10 and later: Users<username>Downloads
  • macOS: /Users/<username>/Downloads
  • Linux: /home/<username>/Downloads

These are defaults for files downloaded or saved through Chrome, not a universal destination for screenshots taken with the operating system’s own shortcut.

Inspect or change Chrome’s destination

  1. Open Chrome’s More menu and choose Settings.
  2. Select Downloads.
  3. Read the folder shown as the download location.
  4. To choose a different folder, select Change.
  5. To choose a location for each file, turn on Ask where to save each file before downloading.

If you used a save dialog for that particular image, the location chosen in the dialog overrides the default. Search the folder shown in Settings and any location you selected manually.

When the image was made with a native screenshot shortcut

A screenshot captured by a computer’s built-in shortcut is not necessarily a Chrome download. Chrome’s Downloads page may therefore contain nothing. Use the screenshot tool, Photos app or file manager supplied by your operating system and search there instead. The exact native folder varies by OS version and user configuration, so do not assume that Chrome’s Downloads folder applies.

Android phones and tablets

Check Chrome’s download list

  1. Open Chrome and tap More (three dots).
  2. Tap Downloads.
  3. Tap the item to open it or use the item’s file action to reveal its location.

If the address bar is at the bottom, swipe up on it first to reach the browser controls and then open Downloads.

Use the Files app

Open the device’s Files app and search for the filename or for recently modified image files. Android manufacturers expose storage differently, and Chrome’s help does not promise one pathname that is correct for every device. If the image was created with the phone’s hardware or on-screen screenshot controls, check the device’s gallery or photo-management workflow rather than Chrome’s download list.

iPhone and iPad

Check Chrome and the destination you selected

  1. Open Chrome and tap More.
  2. Tap Downloads to view files downloaded by the browser.
  3. If you used Save…, open the Files app and inspect the folder chosen in the save sheet.
  4. If you chose Google Drive, look in the Drive destination. Chrome can use a Drive folder named Saved from Chrome.
  5. If you saved an image as an image, check the device’s photo library or Google Photos when that option was selected.

There is no single iOS path to publish because the save sheet lets you choose the destination. A file in Downloads, a file in Drive and an image in Photos are separate outcomes.

Chromebook screenshots

Default location

Google Chromebook Help states that recordings and screenshots are saved to the Downloads folder by default.

  1. Open the Chromebook’s Files app.
  2. Select Downloads and sort by recent changes if necessary.

Find a custom Screen Capture folder

  1. Open the Chromebook’s Screen Capture tool.
  2. Open its Settings.
  3. Choose Select folder and note the folder currently selected.
  4. Open that folder in Files. New captures are sent there after you select it.

This setting applies to ChromeOS Screen Capture. It does not retroactively move older files that were saved in Downloads or another folder.

Chrome Headless automation

For a command-line capture made with Chrome’s --screenshot flag, the documented output is screenshot.png in the command’s current working directory. “Current working directory” means the folder the shell process was in when you launched the command, not necessarily the folder containing the Chrome executable.

google-chrome --headless --screenshot=https://example.com https://example.com

After the command finishes, list the directory from which it ran and look for screenshot.png. If you launched the command from a script, service or IDE, inspect that process’s working-directory setting; it may differ from the directory shown in an interactive terminal.

A reliable search sequence when the file is missing

  1. Identify the device. Desktop, Android, iPhone/iPad, Chromebook and Headless use different storage rules.
  2. Identify the creation method. Decide whether you downloaded an image, used ChromeOS Screen Capture, used a native screenshot shortcut, saved through iOS, or ran Headless.
  3. Open Chrome Downloads. For browser-saved files, use Show in folder on the item.
  4. Inspect the configured destination. On desktop, check Settings > Downloads. On Chromebook, check Screen Capture’s selected folder.
  5. Search the platform’s file or photo app. Android Files, iOS Files/Photos, and desktop file search can find an item when the browser list is incomplete.
  6. For Headless, check the working directory. Look specifically for screenshot.png.
  7. Check whether the action actually completed. A blocked download, failed page load or cancelled save produces no usable screenshot file.

Common causes and fixes

“Downloads” is empty

You may have used an operating-system screenshot shortcut rather than downloaded an image through Chrome. Open the OS screenshot or photo tool, or search the device’s image library.

The file is not in the usual Downloads folder

Chrome’s default location may have been changed, or you may have selected a destination for that one save. Open More > Settings > Downloads, then use the Downloads page’s Show in folder command for recent items.

The Chromebook capture went somewhere unexpected

Open Screen Capture settings and inspect Select folder. ChromeOS sends new captures to the selected folder; older captures remain where they were created.

Android search finds several copies

Sort the Files app by modification time and compare filenames and dimensions. Use Chrome’s Downloads list to open the item associated with the browser save instead of guessing between similarly named images.

An iPhone or iPad search finds no file

Check whether you saved to Files, Google Drive or Photos. The destination is chosen during the save action, so searching only Downloads can miss an image stored in the photo library or the Drive folder named Saved from Chrome.

Headless created a screenshot but you cannot see it

Confirm the command’s current working directory and look for screenshot.png. A service, IDE or scheduled task can run from a different directory than your terminal.

Or skip the browser setup

For repeatable, developer-controlled captures, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. Its cleanup steps accept cookie or consent banners before capture and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

See the parameter reference and complete API details in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

What to remember

Start with the capture method, not a guessed folder. Desktop browser saves are traceable from Chrome’s Downloads page; Chromebook captures default to Downloads but can use a selected folder; mobile saves follow the destination you chose; and Headless writes screenshot.png to its working directory. Native operating-system screenshots follow the platform’s own storage workflow.
