AI can help a tax firm move faster through research, document review, planning support, drafting, and routine client communication. Its strongest role is as an assistant for bounded first-pass work—not as the authority on tax law or a substitute for professional judgment. The available surveys show that firms are using AI in these workflows, but they do not establish that a particular tool is accurate, saves every firm time, or delivers a particular return on investment.
How tax firms are using AI in 2026
Several 2026 surveys report AI use in tax work, but their samples and questions differ. Treat the figures as findings from the named surveys, not as a census of all tax firms or numbers that can be compared directly across studies.
| Survey and scope | Reported finding |
|---|---|
| CPA.com and Blue J, June 2026; more than 1,000 U.S. tax professionals | Respondents reported using AI for advisory projects (44%), tax planning (40%), compliance research (39%), document analysis (36%), and drafting (35%). Sixty percent said they used AI for tax research at least weekly, compared with 33% in the prior-year survey. These are reported uses from a survey co-published with a tax technology vendor. |
| CPA.com and Blue J, June 2026 | 84% agreed AI saves time. This is a reported perception, not a time-and-motion measurement. 69% anticipated moving to value-based, hybrid, or fixed-fee billing; it describes expectations, not a market-wide change already achieved. |
| Journal of Accountancy, 2026 tax software survey | 65% reported using AI in tax research and 32% in client communication. 16% said they had no plans to use AI, compared with 24.3% in the prior-year question. Because the survey’s sample and wording differ from CPA.com and Blue J’s, these figures should not be combined with that survey’s results. |
| Thomson Reuters Institute, 2026; professional organizations across multiple sectors | 40% said their organizations used generative AI, up from 22% the previous year. 18% said their organization tracked ROI, while 40% did not know whether it was tracked. These are cross-profession results—not tax-firm-only findings. |
| Thomson Reuters Institute, Future of Professionals 2026; tax and audit firm professionals | 81% said they regularly used AI in day-to-day workflows; 35% reported using tools their firm had not authorized. The report also found that 26% would turn down a job without professional-grade AI tools and that 89% of corporate tax clients viewed AI-enabled quality improvements as very important or essential. |
| AICPA PCPS CPA Firm Top Issues Survey, 2026; 629 respondents | Technology and AI change management ranked first for anticipated five-year impact across six firm-size groups. The survey also describes different current pressures by firm size, rather than one shared adoption problem. |
Where AI can help in a tax firm
Tax research: find leads, then verify the authority
An AI-enabled research tool can help frame an issue, surface potentially relevant authorities, or summarize material for a practitioner to inspect. The useful output is a starting point for research, not a conclusion to cite without checking. A reviewer should open the underlying primary sources and confirm the jurisdiction, effective dates, facts assumed, and whether the authority still applies. The surveys report research use; they do not independently benchmark the accuracy of AI answers.
Document intake and analysis: organize information for review
AI can assist with classifying client documents, extracting or summarizing information, and flagging items for a person to check. That can make a large file easier to navigate, but extracted figures and summaries still need to be matched against the original documents. Keep client-data handling in view before uploading a file to any system.

Planning and advisory: prepare questions and scenarios
A tool can help organize known facts, identify missing information, and draft a scenario comparison for a tax professional to assess. It should not turn uncertain facts or unsettled law into individualized advice without review. Reported survey use in planning and advisory work shows that practitioners are trying these applications; it does not show that AI replaces the professional’s analysis.
Drafting: create a first version, not a finished position
AI may produce an initial client explanation, internal memo outline, or information request based on material a practitioner has already verified. Before a draft is sent or relied on, check every tax statement and citation. The IRS Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) warns that AI can produce fabricated output and says practitioners should carefully review AI-created documents.

Client communication and workflow: reduce routine friction
Staff can use AI to draft routine status updates or summarize next steps, then review the message before it reaches a client. The practical benefit is the time left for timely responses and substantive client conversations—but a firm should confirm that benefit in its own workflow rather than infer it from survey perceptions.
Where AI still needs a human tax professional
In guidance dated June 24, 2026, IRS OPR identifies fabricated or hallucinated output, bias, and limited transparency as concerns. It also raises privacy, confidentiality, and data-protection risks, including the possibility that client information could be reused or mixed across matters. These are reasons to define boundaries around use, not merely to add a disclaimer to an AI-generated answer.

What IRS e-file approval does—and does not—tell you
The IRS requires software used to prepare electronic returns to pass Modernized e-File Assurance Testing. According to the IRS, its testing uses test returns and checks calculations, XML formatting, transmission, receipt, and rendering. Vendors are not required to support every form, so confirm coverage for the forms and tax year your clients need.
E-file approval is a technical check for the relevant filing process. It is not an IRS rating of a tool’s AI reasoning, an endorsement of its research answers, or a guarantee that it supports every form.

How to evaluate an AI approach for your firm
Compare actual options against the work your firm intends to support. A tool that performs well at summarizing internal documents may not provide the authority trail needed for tax research or the controls required for taxpayer information.
- Confidentiality and security: Establish what taxpayer information staff may enter, how prompts and files are retained or used, who can access them, how deletion works, and how incidents are handled.
- Evidence and traceability: Check whether the system links statements to current source material and lets reviewers inspect the underlying authority.
- Review records: Determine whether staff can record prompts, source versions, changes, approvals, and corrections.
- Tax coverage: Verify federal, state, and local scope; individual and business coverage; entity and issue coverage; tax-year updates; and stated content limits.
- Workflow fit: Assess how the tool works with document intake, research, preparation, review, and client communication. Avoid creating another disconnected step without a measurable reason.
- Ownership and training: Assign an implementation owner, define permitted uses, train staff, and establish when uncertain or high-impact work must be escalated. The AICPA’s 2026 firm survey identifies technology and AI change management as a leading expected concern, while also noting that pressures vary by firm size.
- Outcome measurement: Set a baseline and track review time, correction rates, turnaround, staff experience, and client outcomes. A change in perceived time savings alone does not show that the firm has improved its results.
- Filing requirements: Separately check IRS approval status and required form coverage for the tax year at issue.
A controlled pilot can make these comparisons concrete: choose one bounded workflow, record how staff handle it now, define review and data rules, and compare results after use. If review effort or corrections rise, narrow the permitted use or stop the pilot. The right decision depends on the firm’s own evidence; the surveys do not establish a universally best tool or a predictable ROI.

What the evidence can—and cannot—support
The 2026 surveys establish that respondents report using AI across several tax workflows, and that many respondents perceive time savings or expect changes in billing. They do not demonstrate that a particular firm will save time, improve accuracy, or earn a specific return. Nor do they establish that AI can take responsibility for interpreting tax law, validating a return position, protecting client data, or advising a client. Those remain matters for the firm to control and verify.
