Use a wide aperture (a lower f-number) when you need more light or want a focused subject to stand out against a softer background. Use a narrow aperture (a higher f-number) when you want more of the scene, from foreground to background, to appear acceptably sharp. First check whether your phone and the selected lens let you change aperture: many phone lenses use a fixed aperture and handle exposure automatically.
What aperture and f-numbers mean
Aperture is the opening in a lens that lets light reach the image sensor. The f-number works opposite to the opening size: a lower number means a wider opening, while a higher number means a narrower one. As Sony explains, a wide aperture passes more light and creates shallower depth of field; a narrow aperture passes less light and creates deeper depth of field.
Depth of field is the range in front of and behind the focus point that appears acceptably sharp. Aperture affects that range, but it is not the only factor: subject distance and focal length matter too. A wide aperture can help soften a background, but it does not guarantee visible blur in every phone photo.
Choose an aperture for the photo you want

Check whether your phone lets you change aperture
Do not assume your phone has a manual f-stop control. Aperture may be fixed for a particular lens, with the camera app managing exposure automatically. Check the camera settings and the specifications for your exact phone model and lens.

Documented iPhone examples
Apple’s iPhone camera settings guide says the iPhone 18 Pro Main camera sets aperture automatically, while also documenting manual aperture options in listed camera modes. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro specifications list ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8, and ƒ/4.0 for the Main camera; the Ultra Wide is ƒ/2.2 and the Telephoto is ƒ/2.8. These are model- and lens-specific values, not standard settings across phones.
For comparison, Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro specifications list ƒ/1.78 for the Main camera and ƒ/2.2 for the Ultra Wide, without listing manual aperture choices on that page. These Apple examples do not establish which controls other manufacturers’ phones provide.

Manual video control on supported models
Apple’s Final Cut Camera guide documents aperture controls for iPhone 18 Pro or later with iOS 27 or later. It describes aperture as affecting depth of field and exposure, and says the widest listed setting can produce bokeh. These model and software requirements may change over time; consult the guide for the current supported setup.
If your phone or camera app does not offer aperture selection, use the controls it does provide. Adjust focus and exposure where available, choose an appropriate lens, and use portrait mode if you want a software-created background blur.

For macro and close-ups, check focus distance and lens selection
Aperture is not a shortcut to macro focus. Apple says supported iPhones use the Ultra Wide camera for macro photography and may switch to it automatically as you move close to a subject. If a close-up looks blurry, Apple’s macro photography guide suggests backing up or switching to 0.5x. Changing your distance or lens may matter more than trying to adjust aperture.
