If there is no emergency sign but you are at higher risk for complications, feel very sick, or are worried, contact a health care provider promptly. Mild illness in someone without known risk factors can often be managed at home.
Flu and COVID-19 can cause similar symptoms, so symptoms alone do not confirm which illness you have.
When should you go to the ER for flu symptoms?
Get emergency medical care right away if an adult or child has a warning sign below. Call 911 for a life-threatening emergency or if the person cannot safely get to care. The CDC says people experiencing these warning signs should obtain medical care right away.
Emergency warning signs in adults
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath.
- Persistent pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen.
- Persistent dizziness, confusion, or inability to wake.
- Seizures.
- Not urinating.
- Severe muscle pain, severe weakness, or unsteadiness.
- Fever or cough that improves and then returns or worsens.
- A chronic medical condition that is worsening.
Emergency warning signs in children
- Fast or difficult breathing, blue lips or face, or ribs pulling in with each breath.
- Chest pain or severe muscle pain that makes the child refuse to walk.
- Dehydration signs, including no urine for 8 hours, dry mouth, or no tears when crying.
- The child is not alert or does not interact while awake.
- Seizures.
- Fever above 104°F that is not controlled by fever-reducing medicine, or any fever in a child younger than 12 weeks.
- Symptoms that improve and then return or worsen, or a chronic condition that is worsening.
These lists are not exhaustive. Seek medical advice for any other symptom that is severe or concerning.

When should you call a doctor promptly?
Contact a health care provider promptly if you have flu-like symptoms and are at higher risk for complications, feel very sick, or are worried about your condition—even if you do not have an emergency warning sign. Tell the clinician about your symptoms, when they began, and any risk factors.
Who is at higher risk?
- Adults age 65 and older.
- Children younger than 5, especially those younger than 2.
- Pregnant people.
- People with certain chronic medical conditions.
A clinician may recommend antiviral treatment for someone at higher risk. Flu antivirals require a prescription and work best when started within 1 to 2 days after symptoms begin. They can shorten illness by about a day, and treatment may still help later for people at increased risk or those who are hospitalized. Do not wait for a test result before contacting a clinician.

Can a home flu test tell you whether to seek care?
No. A test result should not determine whether a higher-risk person contacts a clinician. The CDC’s 2025–2026 flu season guidance says home tests can detect influenza A and B and SARS-CoV-2, but it does not provide specific guidance on at-home flu test use. Clinicians do not need a test result before treating suspected flu in people at increased risk.
Because flu and COVID-19 symptoms overlap, a home test may provide information about infection, but it cannot replace medical assessment when warning signs or risk factors are present.

- Note: Before using the health care thermometer, carefully read the product manual. Start measuring when “Lo℉” shows up. To ensure the accuracy of the measurement, avoid touching the probe with your hands or other hot objects prior to taking the temperature.
When is home care reasonable?
Many people with mild illness who are not at higher risk can recover at home without medical care or antiviral drugs. Stay home and avoid contact with others except to get medical care. Keep monitoring symptoms and seek care if a warning sign develops, you become very sick, or you are concerned.
A thermometer can help you measure a child’s temperature, but it does not diagnose flu or decide on its own whether medical care is needed. For a child’s fever, use the age-specific emergency signs above rather than relying on a number alone.
