Call 911 now if someone with a possible overdose cannot be awakened, has trouble breathing, collapses, or has a seizure. For a suspected opioid overdose, call 911 even if naloxone is available or the person seems to improve. If a possible poisoning has no life-threatening symptoms, contact U.S. Poison Control promptly at 1-800-222-1222 for individualized advice.
When should I call 911 for an overdose?
Call 911 immediately if the person collapses, has a seizure, has trouble breathing, or cannot be awakened. Do not wait for online poison triage or for symptoms to worsen. You do not need to know which substance was taken before calling. If you cannot tell whether someone is simply intoxicated or overdosing, the CDC advises treating it like an overdose.

What are the signs of an opioid overdose?
Opioid overdose can slow or stop breathing and become fatal. Look for inability to wake the person, slow or shallow breathing, choking or gurgling sounds, or blue or discolored lips or nails. Other warning signs include pinpoint pupils, limpness, an extremely pale or clammy face, vomiting, inability to speak, or a slowed or stopped heartbeat. A person may show only some signs.

When overdose is possible, act rather than trying to identify the drug or waiting for certainty. The CDC lists the signs and response steps in What to Do If You Think Someone Is Overdosing; SAMHSA describes opioid overdose as requiring immediate emergency attention in its opioid overdose guidance.
What should I do while emergency help is coming?
For a suspected opioid overdose, take these steps:
- Give naloxone or another opioid overdose reversal medicine if available. CDC says naloxone is safe to give when opioid overdose is suspected, even if opioids turn out not to be involved. It reverses opioid effects; it is not a general antidote for other poisons.
- Call 911. Do this even if you have given naloxone or the person appears to recover.
- Help the person stay awake and breathing. Follow the emergency dispatcher’s instructions.
- Lay the person on their side to help prevent choking, and stay with them until emergency assistance arrives.
Naloxone may restore normal breathing within 2 to 3 minutes. If normal breathing has not returned, CDC advises waiting 2 to 3 minutes after the first dose before giving another dose; follow the instructions for the specific product. See the CDC’s naloxone guidance.

Should I call 911 if naloxone works?
Yes. Emergency medical help is still needed after naloxone, even if the person wakes or seems better. Symptoms may not fully resolve or may return, and other complications may occur. The CDC/NIOSH advises continuing to seek emergency medical assistance after a suspected opioid overdose: Responding to a Suspected Opioid Overdose.

Poison Control’s phone service at 1-800-222-1222 is free, confidential, and available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It can assess the person, substance, amount, timing, and symptoms and recommend what to do. Use the phone service rather than the online tool for cases involving self-harm, multiple substances, pregnancy, pets, a child younger than 6 months, or an adult older than 79. For preparedness around opioid overdose, CDC says anyone can carry naloxone and that it is available over the counter in all 50 U.S. states. Follow the product directions and still call 911 when it is used. Naloxone does not treat non-opioid poisoning or replace medical evaluation.
