Contact each provider as soon as your dates are reasonably firm: there is no single nationwide notice period, and providers and local rules differ.
Choose the dates around responsibility and service needs
For each address, identify the date you become responsible for the property, the date you expect to move in or out, and when you need utilities available. Those dates may not be the same. Ask the provider which date to use if a closing, lease, or occupancy date differs from moving day.
Starting service at the new address
Request a start date that matches when you become responsible for the property or need service available, subject to the provider’s rules. Portland Water Bureau, for example, asks new owners for the date they become legally responsible and uses it as the start date and first billing date for water-related service. Stopping service at the old address
Give the provider a specific stop date based on when your responsibility or occupancy ends. Do not assume a landlord, buyer, seller, or next occupant will close an account in your name. The Missouri Public Service Commission warns: “Do not rely on others to take utility service out of your name. You will be responsible for an account that has not been closed.” Read the Missouri PSC’s moving guide.

How far ahead to contact the utilities
Contact each provider once your move dates are reasonably firm, then confirm its available dates and any notice requirements. Missouri’s Public Service Commission suggests contacting providers several weeks before a move and keeping a record of the conversation. Specific providers and jurisdictions use different windows:

| Pennsylvania discontinuation rule | Under 52 Pa. Code § 56.16(a), a customer about to vacate or seeking discontinuation must give at least seven days’ notice and specify the desired stop date; without notice, the customer remains responsible for service rendered. These examples are not interchangeable: check the current rules for every utility serving your addresses. Start-service availability, advance scheduling, and required notice can vary by provider and location.

Plan for a short overlap if the move is staged
If you will clean, repair, or move belongings after leaving one home—or arrive at the next home before the old service should end—ask whether both addresses can remain active temporarily. A provider’s “transfer” may mean different things: it can be a new occupant opening an account, or an existing customer moving within one provider’s territory. Consumers Energy says its transfer can leave electricity or gas on at both addresses, so confirm which accounts remain active and who is billed during any overlap.
Make and verify the requests
- List the providers for both addresses. Check electric, gas, water and sewer, trash, and communications service. Ask each provider about its scheduling window, same-day availability, whether one request can handle both addresses, and any visit or meter-access requirements.
- Submit the new-address start request. Give the provider the service address and the requested start date tied to your responsibility or service needs.
- Submit the old-address stop request. Specify the stop date rather than assuming service will end when you move out or when someone else takes possession.
- Ask about final readings and billing. Where available, request a final actual meter reading rather than an estimate, provide a forwarding address, and confirm how the final bill will be delivered. The Missouri PSC recommends an actual final reading where possible.
- Keep a record. Save confirmation numbers, messages, and the date and name of anyone who handled the request. Recheck the dates if your closing, lease, or moving schedule changes.
Do not treat a post-closing buffer as a universal rule
Move timing advice can depend on the transaction. Opendoor’s seller guidance, updated May 29, 2026, recommends scheduling utilities to shut off three days after closing and discusses arranging service one to two weeks before closing. That is guidance for Opendoor’s own seller process, not a general utility deadline. Use the actual responsibility dates in your transaction and confirm them with the utility and the parties involved.
