Stay home while respiratory-virus symptoms are not improving. Under current U.S. CDC general guidance, you can resume normal activities once, for at least 24 hours, your symptoms have improved overall and you have been fever-free without fever-reducing medicine. Take added precautions for the next five days; if you develop a fever or feel worse after returning, stay home again.
When to stay home—and when to return
The CDC advises staying home and away from others, including household members who are not sick, when you have respiratory-virus symptoms that are not better explained by another cause. Symptoms can include fever, chills, fatigue, cough, runny nose, or headache. The CDC’s Preventing Spread of Respiratory Viruses When You’re Sick guidance, dated Aug. 18, 2025, says to stay home until both return conditions have been met for at least 24 hours:
- Your symptoms are improving overall. They do not have to disappear completely.
- You have had no fever without taking fever-reducing medication.
Once both conditions are true for a full 24 hours, general guidance permits resuming normal activities. This is public-health advice, not a decision about whether your employer will approve leave or what its attendance policy requires.
What to do during the five days after returning
Resuming normal activities does not mean that the risk of spreading infection is gone. For the next five days, the CDC recommends added precautions, especially when you are around people at higher risk of severe illness. Options include:

- Lab-tested F3 filtration: Replaceable F3 filters were laboratory tested for 99.9% filtration efficiency down to 0.1 micron; active carbon helps reduce organic odors.
- Designed to reduce eyewear fogging: An adjustable nose clip, nose foam and dual discharge valves help direct warm exhaled air away from safety glasses; results vary by fit and conditions.
- Three ways to wear: Switch between dual head straps for stability, a neck strap for quick on-and-off use or ear loops for lighter tasks; adjust for a secure, comfortable fit.
- Reusable shell and quick filter changes: Hand-wash the mesh shell and replace filters with the patented four-point snap system; includes two F3 filters and a clip-on belt storage bag.
- Built for dusty tasks: Designed for woodworking, sanding, mowing, agriculture, demolition and DIY use; not NIOSH approved and not intended to satisfy occupational respiratory-protection requirements.
- Wearing a well-fitted mask, such as a well-fitting KN95.
- Improving cleaner-air measures, including ventilation.
- Practicing good hygiene and keeping physical distance when practical.
- Testing when around other people.
These are optional added precautions in the CDC’s general guidance, not prerequisites for routine return to work. It does not endorse a particular mask or test.
If symptoms return or get worse
If you develop a fever or your symptoms worsen after going back to normal activities, stay home and away from others again. Resume activities only after your symptoms are improving overall and you have been fever-free without fever-reducing medicine for at least 24 hours. Follow the added-precaution guidance for the next five days after returning.

Healthcare workers follow different guidance
The general public guidance is not the full rule set for healthcare workplaces. CDC healthcare personnel guidance dated Sept. 11, 2026, covers suspected or confirmed viral respiratory infections addressed by that section. It says affected workers should be restricted from work until all of these conditions are met:
- At least three days have passed since symptom onset—or, for someone who remains asymptomatic, since the first positive test. The onset date or first positive test is day zero.
- They have been fever-free for at least 24 hours without fever-reducing medication.
- Symptoms are improving, and they feel well enough to return to work.
On returning, the guidance calls for source control through at least the end of day seven. Its recommendation excludes pathogens covered in other guideline sections or separate interim guidance, so it should not be applied to every healthcare situation. Check your workplace’s infection-control or occupational-health instructions. See the CDC’s Viral Respiratory Infections guidance for the applicable details.

Workplace policies and supplies
CDC recommends that organizations encourage workers to stay home when sick and support that with paid time off, flexible leave, or telework policies. CDC/NIOSH also notes that improving building ventilation can reduce exposure risk. These are prevention recommendations, not a statement of any individual worker’s legal entitlement. Review your employer’s policy and any applicable local requirements.
For flu prevention, the CDC also advises staying home from work, school, and errands when sick if possible. Its Healthy Habits to Prevent Flu page lists workplace hygiene supplies including tissues, soap, paper towels, alcohol-based hand rub, and disposable wipes.
