If typing in Word replaces the text immediately to the right of your cursor, Overtype mode is probably on. Turn it off in Word for Windows under File > Options > Advanced, then clear both Overtype-related checkboxes. This restores normal insertion, where new text is added rather than replacing existing characters.
Why Word deletes text as you type
Microsoft identifies Overtype mode as the likely cause when text at the insertion point is deleted as you type. In Overtype mode, each character you enter replaces existing text to the right of the cursor instead of shifting that text forward. The cursor may look normal, so the change can be easy to mistake for deleted text.
The Insert key can control Overtype when the relevant setting is enabled. Pressing it may switch the behavior, which is why the problem can appear to start suddenly.
Turn off Overtype in Word for Windows
Microsoft documents these steps for Word for Microsoft 365 and Word 2016, 2019, 2021, and 2024 on Windows:

- In Word, select File > Options > Advanced.
- Under Editing options, clear Use overtype mode.
- Clear Use the Insert key to control overtype mode as well. This prevents the Insert key from turning on Overtype through that setting.
- Select OK if the dialog offers that button, return to your document, and try typing between existing words.
Microsoft’s Text disappears as I type guidance specifically directs users to clear both checkboxes. With Overtype off, typing should insert characters without replacing the text to the right of the cursor.
If the setting does not match what you see
Only characters after the cursor are replaced
That behavior fits Overtype mode. Recheck that both boxes are cleared, and test by placing the cursor inside a word and typing one character.

A whole page or large section disappears
That is not the specific character-by-character replacement described by Overtype. A Microsoft Q&A response suggests checking whether the issue occurs in other documents and investigating other possibilities, including hidden text. When Overtype is useful
Overtype deliberately replaces existing characters as you type, which can be useful when editing text in place. For ordinary writing, leave it off. If you want to use the Insert key to control the mode, enable Use the Insert key to control overtype mode; otherwise, clearing that option avoids that particular way of switching modes.
