Applied Digital’s VeriChip had two different FDA milestones: 2002 guidance about certain identification and safety uses, followed by a 2004 announcement that it had been cleared for medical uses in the United States. Calling both events “FDA approval” obscures an important distinction.
What did the FDA say about VeriChip?
The 2002 guidance
In 2002, Applied Digital said the FDA had issued written guidance indicating that its VeriChip line would not be regulated as a medical device for certain identification and safety uses. That was guidance about regulatory scope; it was not the same milestone as medical-use clearance. EE Times reported the announcement at the time.
The 2004 medical-use milestone
In October 2004, Applied Digital announced that the FDA had cleared VeriChip for medical uses in the United States. Contemporary coverage described this as clearance. The distinction is more precise than treating the 2002 guidance and the 2004 event as one broad approval of implantable chips.
These reports concern VeriChip and its stated uses in the United States at that time. They do not establish the present regulatory status or availability of the product, nor do they mean that every human implant or RFID device has FDA clearance.

What was the VeriChip implant?
VeriChip, also called VeriMed in medical coverage, was a passive radio-frequency identification (RFID) transponder placed under the skin. A scanner nearby energized the tag, which then transmitted a unique identifier. The identifier could be used to retrieve information from a central or secure database; the implant itself did not contain the patient’s full medical record.
The proposed clinical purpose was to help identify a patient and access relevant records when the person was unconscious, had no records available, or could not communicate. Applied Digital’s system involved the implant, scanners, and a database intended for hospitals, physicians, and patients.

What did the implant and system cost, and how large was the chip?
The figures below are historical reports, not current prices or product specifications.
| Item | Reported figure | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Implant dimensions | Approximately 12 × 2.1 mm | Applied Digital description reported by EE Times in 2002. |
| VeriChip capsule dimensions | Approximately 11 × 2 mm | EE Times report from 2004; the dimensions differ from the 2002 description. |
| Identifier | 16 digits | BMJ report from 2004. |
| Scanner price | $650 | BMJ report from 2004; a historical figure, not a current price. |
| Implantation cost | $150–$200 | BMJ report from 2004; a historical figure, not a current price. |
| Scanner donation | 200 scanners | BMJ reported in 2004 that scanners had been donated to major U.S. trauma centres. |
BMJ described implantation beneath the skin of the upper arm under local anaesthesia. The reports describe a system dependent on a scanner and access to a separate database, rather than a chip that independently displayed a medical record.

Why did the implant raise privacy and security concerns?
The potential benefit was rapid identification when a patient could not speak for themselves. The trade-off was that an identifier under the skin could invite concerns about privacy, tracking, coercion, and compelled use. Because medical information depended on a remote record system, the implant alone could not ensure that the relevant data was available or accessible.
Contemporary coverage also noted that an external medical ID bracelet could accomplish similar identification in some cases. The implant’s distinctive feature was its under-the-skin identifier, not a complete medical history stored inside the body.

Can a scanner read a human implant?
In the VeriChip system described in the historical reports, a nearby scanner energized the passive tag and read its identifier. The scanner did not retrieve a medical record directly from the implant; the identifier was used to look up information in the associated database.
Those accounts do not specify a dependable read distance or establish that a current, general-purpose RFID reader can communicate with a legacy VeriChip. Compatibility with present-day readers is not established by the 2002–2006 reporting.
