WhatsApp’s new password is for two-step verification, not for unlocking the app. Meta announced on August 25, 2026, that WhatsApp is upgrading this account-security setting from a six-digit PIN to a longer password that can include letters, numbers, and special characters. The feature is rolling out gradually, so it may not be available on every account yet.
What WhatsApp’s new password does
Two-step verification adds a credential beyond the one-time code WhatsApp sends when you register or verify an account. WhatsApp says this extra layer is intended to help prevent someone from taking over an account even if they obtain that one-time code. The new password replaces the six-digit two-step-verification PIN; it is not an app-lock password and does not replace your phone’s screen lock.
Meta describes the upgraded password as longer and able to include letters, numbers, and special characters, making it harder to guess. The announcement does not establish a measured reduction in account takeovers, so the change should be understood as an additional safeguard, not a guarantee that an account cannot be compromised. How to check for and enable the feature
WABetaInfo reports that the account-password feature is gradually rolling out on Android and iOS. Its reported setup path is Settings > Account; the option may not appear for your account yet.

- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Account.
- Look for the two-step verification or account-password setting. If the password option is available, follow the in-app prompts to set it up.
- According to WABetaInfo, the password must have at least eight characters, including at least one letter and one number. It can also include special characters, consistent with Meta’s broader description.
- If the option is not shown, check again later. The reported rollout is gradual, and no universal availability date has been announced.
The menu path and minimum requirements are details reported by WABetaInfo on August 26, 2026; Meta’s announcement confirms the upgrade but does not specify those setup details.
What to do if you forget the password
WABetaInfo reports that you can request a reset using a recovery email if one is available. If you did not add a recovery email, its report says you must verify the account through your phone number. Follow the recovery instructions shown in WhatsApp; this recovery description comes from WABetaInfo, not Meta’s announcement, and should not be treated as a guaranteed route for every account or situation.

How this relates to WhatsApp passkeys
A passkey and the new two-step-verification password are related to account security, but they are not the same credential or feature. Meta said more than one billion people had set up a WhatsApp passkey; that figure refers to passkeys, not adoption of the new password. The password upgrade specifically changes the credential used for two-step verification.
