Don’t reply, tap a link, open an attachment, pay, or share personal or financial information. Save screenshots if you may need evidence, then report and block the sender in WhatsApp. In the United States, report a fake tax message through the IRS’s official reporting process and the FTC’s ReportFraud.ftc.gov. If you already shared sensitive information, start identity-theft recovery promptly.

A surprise WhatsApp message offering, releasing, or correcting a tax refund is a warning sign—not a safe way to verify a refund. WhatsApp’s menu labels can vary by phone, desktop app, and version, but the key is to use the in-app reporting option and preserve any evidence before deleting the chat.

How can you recognize a tax-refund scam on WhatsApp?

Treat an unexpected WhatsApp message about a refund, tax credit, rebate, or penalty as suspicious, especially if it asks you to act urgently or provide information. The IRS says, “We never send direct messages by social media,” and says it does not send text messages without permission. Check a tax claim only by independently opening an official government website or using a known official contact route—not through the message’s link.

A message can be deceptive even if it uses a government agency’s name, logo, a familiar-looking profile, or details that make the sender seem credible. WhatsApp warns about impersonation, including someone pretending to be a person you know, and about accounts that try to build trust before asking for information. Do not treat a plausible tone or a convincing profile as proof that a refund offer is genuine.

Warning signs include:

  • An unexpected message claiming you are owed money or must correct a refund.
  • Urgency, threats, or pressure to act immediately.
  • Requests for a Social Security number, bank details, login credentials, or payment.
  • A link, QR code, attachment, or download offered as a way to claim or verify a refund.
  • A request to forward the message or invite others.
  • An account impersonating the IRS, another tax authority, or someone you know, including an account that builds trust before asking for information.

Any one of these features is a reason to stop and verify independently. A request to pay a fee to release a refund, provide banking information to “correct” a payment, or pass a message along is not something to handle through the WhatsApp conversation. Do not respond to ask whether the offer is legitimate: replying gives the sender another opportunity to pressure you or draw you into the exchange.

For readers outside the United States, HMRC says it will never contact people on WhatsApp about a tax rebate or penalty. That is a UK-specific statement; use the relevant tax authority’s independently verified guidance in other countries.

What should you do before reporting the message?

Stop interacting with the sender and preserve the information you may need before removing the chat. Do not reply, follow links, scan QR codes, open downloads, make payments, or provide information. There is no need to engage with the sender to gather more proof; use what is already visible in the chat.

  1. Capture evidence. If the message may be needed for a report or recovery, take screenshots showing the sender, profile, message, any link, and timestamps. Back up the chat if appropriate. Include enough of the conversation to make the claim and sender clear, while keeping the original chat available until you decide whether you need it.
  2. Do not use the message to verify a refund. Open the official tax authority’s website yourself or use a contact route you already trust. Do not rely on a link or phone number included in the message, even if the message looks official.
  3. Report and block in WhatsApp. Preserve evidence first if you need it, because you may choose to delete the chat afterward. Choose the combined option when available, rather than assuming that blocking by itself sends a report.
  4. Make a separate government report. WhatsApp’s report is not a substitute for reporting a fake tax communication to the appropriate authority. For U.S. tax-related messages, report through the IRS process and the FTC’s ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Reporting, blocking, and deleting are separate actions. Reporting sends information for WhatsApp to review; blocking stops direct future contact from that sender; deleting or archiving changes what remains visible in your chat list. If you need the message for an IRS report, an FTC report, or identity-theft recovery, save the evidence before deleting it.

How do you report and block a scammer in WhatsApp?

Open the conversation, go to the sender’s contact or chat information, and choose the reporting and blocking option. Prefer Report and Block when WhatsApp offers it; menu wording and placement can differ across Android, iPhone, web, desktop, and app versions. The goal is to use WhatsApp’s in-app controls, not to find a single exact menu path that applies to every device.

  1. Open the chat with the suspicious sender.
  2. Select the sender’s name or the chat information control to open the contact or chat details.
  3. Choose Block. If prompted, select Report and Block rather than blocking alone.
  4. Review any confirmation choices shown in the app and submit the report through that in-app flow.
  5. After preserving any evidence, delete or archive the conversation if you want to remove it from your chat list.

WhatsApp’s current desktop instructions also provide a Report option with a checkbox to block the sender. If your app displays different wording or places the controls elsewhere, look in the chat or contact information controls for the reporting and blocking functions. WhatsApp’s Help Center says, “You can also report them if you think they are sending problematic content or spam.”

WhatsApp says it may receive up to the last five messages sent by the reported user, along with the reported user or group ID, message timing, and message type. The sender or group is not notified that you reported them. A report may lead to enforcement, but it does not guarantee a ban or other action. Blocking stops future messages, calls, and status updates from that sender; it does not automatically remove the existing chat.

WhatsApp’s reporting process is in the app. Contacting WhatsApp through another channel does not expedite its review. You can still make separate reports to the tax authority or consumer-protection agency; those reports serve a different purpose from WhatsApp’s review of an account or message.

Should you report, block, or do both?

Reporting alerts WhatsApp to the account or content; blocking is the action that stops direct future contact from that sender. Use both when the message is a scam and WhatsApp provides the combined option. If you only block, you have not necessarily submitted the account or its recent messages for WhatsApp review. If you only report, do not assume that future messages and calls have been stopped.

Action What it does What it does not do
Report Sends information about the reported user or group and recent messages to WhatsApp for review. WhatsApp may receive up to the reported user’s last five messages and related account, timing, and message-type information. Does not guarantee enforcement or, by itself, stop future messages.
Block Stops future messages, calls, and status updates from that sender. Does not automatically delete the old chat or submit a report to the IRS or FTC.
Report and Block Combines reporting to WhatsApp with blocking the sender, when the option is available. Does not replace preserving evidence or making a separate government report.

The existing chat may remain after blocking. That matters if you plan to keep screenshots, report the message elsewhere, or refer to its sender information later. Once you have saved anything you need, you can delete or archive the chat. Deleting it is optional; it is not a requirement for blocking or reporting.

What if the scam message is in a WhatsApp group?

Report the message, member, or group as appropriate. Blocking one person does not stop that person’s messages from appearing in a group you both share, so leaving the group may be necessary if you want to stop seeing them there. Individual-chat and group-chat handling are not identical: a block limits direct contact, but it does not remove the other person from a shared group or prevent their group messages from appearing.

If evidence matters, capture the message and relevant group or sender details before deleting anything or leaving. Then use WhatsApp’s in-app reporting controls for the relevant message, member, or group; available controls may vary by app version. If the scam is being circulated in a group, forwarding it to other people is not a safe way to warn them. Preserve the details, report the relevant content, and avoid interacting with the claim or its links.

How do you report a fake tax message in the United States?

After handling the WhatsApp conversation, report the fake tax communication through the IRS process and report the scam to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Open the official reporting route independently rather than following a link in the message. A WhatsApp report is for WhatsApp; IRS and FTC reports are separate government reporting steps and should not be treated as interchangeable.

For suspicious text reports, the IRS asks for identifying details such as the sender information, message contents, recipient number, and date and time. Keep your screenshots and chat information available so you can provide relevant details through the official process. The sender’s account or number, the exact claim, and when the message arrived can help identify what you are reporting. Do not send a reply to the scammer to obtain information that is missing.

If you are outside the United States, follow the tax authority’s official reporting guidance for your jurisdiction. HMRC specifically says it will never contact people on WhatsApp about a tax rebate or penalty. Do not assume the U.S. IRS process applies in another country; use an official authority website or another independently verified contact route.

What if you clicked the link or shared information?

Stop communicating with the sender and move from message handling to identity-theft recovery. Follow the guidance at IdentityTheft.gov, report the event to the FTC and IRS as applicable, and contact financial institutions if you exposed account information. The next step depends on what you disclosed: a clicked link, an identity detail, a bank detail, and a login credential are not the same exposure.

  • If you shared a Social Security number or other identity information: use IdentityTheft.gov’s recovery guidance and report the event to the FTC and IRS as applicable. Stop providing details to the sender and do not use the message’s link to continue the exchange.
  • If you shared bank or other financial account details: contact the affected financial institution through a known official route and monitor the account through its official channels. Do not use contact information supplied by the message.
  • If you shared login credentials: stop using the scammer’s link and address the affected account through its official service channels. Do not send additional credentials or verification information to the sender.
  • If you only clicked: do not continue through the page or provide information; use official recovery guidance if you disclosed anything or believe an account may be affected. Do not return to the page to check the refund claim.

Keep the screenshots and relevant chat information if they may help with reporting or recovery. Do not continue a conversation just because you have already clicked or shared something. Report the event through official routes and contact the affected institution when account information was exposed. The most important distinction is whether the interaction went beyond viewing the message: if sensitive information was disclosed, begin recovery promptly rather than waiting for the sender to contact you again.

Do not revisit the scammer’s link to check whether a refund is real. Verify any refund independently through an official government website.

Does a WhatsApp report guarantee the account will be removed?

No. WhatsApp says a user report may result in enforcement, but reporting does not necessarily lead to a ban or another action. Blocking remains useful for stopping direct contact even while WhatsApp reviews the report. The fact that a scam account remains visible after you report it does not mean you should reply, click, or make a second contact with the sender; use the separate official reporting channels for the tax-related scam.

WhatsApp and Meta reported detecting and banning more than 6.8 million accounts linked to scam centers during the first six months of 2025. That figure describes enforcement activity at scale; it is not a guarantee that a particular report will result in a specific action. For an individual recipient, the practical steps remain to preserve evidence if needed, use Report and Block, and report the fake tax communication through the appropriate official channel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the IRS contact me on WhatsApp about a refund?

The IRS says it never sends direct messages by social media and does not send text messages without permission. Treat a WhatsApp message claiming to be from the IRS as suspicious and verify any tax issue through an independently opened official IRS route.

How do I block and report a scammer on WhatsApp?

Open the chat, select the sender’s name or chat information, and use the in-app reporting and blocking controls. Choose Report and Block when offered. Menu wording and placement can vary by device and app version.

Should I delete a WhatsApp scam message or report it first?

If you may need the message as evidence, take screenshots showing the sender, profile, message, links, and timestamps, and back up the chat if appropriate. Then report and block in WhatsApp. You may delete or archive the conversation afterward; blocking does not automatically erase it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if I clicked the tax-refund link?

Stop interacting with the sender and do not continue through the link or provide information. If you disclosed sensitive information or believe an account may be affected, follow IdentityTheft.gov guidance, report to the FTC and IRS as applicable, and contact a financial institution if account information was exposed.

Will the scammer know that I reported their WhatsApp message?

WhatsApp says the reported sender or group is not notified that a report was made. WhatsApp may receive up to the last five messages sent by the reported user and related account, timing, and message-type information.

Can I report a fake HMRC refund message on WhatsApp?

HMRC says it will never contact people on WhatsApp about a tax rebate or penalty. Readers in the UK should use HMRC’s official reporting guidance reached independently, rather than relying on the message or its links.

Does blocking someone remove their messages from a shared group?

No. Blocking an individual does not prevent that person’s messages from appearing in a group you both share. Report the message, member, or group as appropriate; leaving the group may be necessary if you want to stop seeing the messages there.

How do I report a fake tax-refund message in the United States?

Report the fake tax communication through the IRS process and report the scam to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Open those official routes independently. For suspicious text reports, the IRS asks for details such as sender information, message contents, recipient number, and date and time.

Does reporting alone stop future WhatsApp messages?

Do not assume so. Reporting submits information for WhatsApp review, while blocking is what stops future direct messages, calls, and status updates from that sender. Use Report and Block when available.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Treat an unexpected WhatsApp refund offer as suspicious. Don’t reply, click, download, pay, or share information. Save evidence if needed, use WhatsApp’s in-app Report and Block option, and make separate official IRS and FTC reports in the United States. If you disclosed sensitive information, start recovery at IdentityTheft.gov and contact affected financial institutions through known official channels.
