If a WhatsApp message asks for a verification code, money, secrecy, or urgent action, pause and verify it through a separate, trusted channel. Never share your WhatsApp registration code. If you already shared it or lost access, re-register your phone number through WhatsApp and enter the six-digit code sent by SMS or call; WhatsApp says this logs out other devices connected to the account.
How to spot a WhatsApp scam
Scammers use WhatsApp to impersonate people and organizations, steal account access, lure users to phishing pages, or persuade them to send money. The display name or profile photo is not proof of identity. Look at what the message is asking you to do, and verify unexpected claims before acting.
- A request for a code: Someone asks you to send a WhatsApp registration code or another verification code, perhaps claiming it was sent by mistake or needed to fix an account. Treat the code like a key to your account; do not share it, even if the request appears to come from a friend. The FTC says, “Anyone who asks you for your account verification code is a scammer.”
- Urgency, secrecy, or unusual payment: A supposed relative, friend, business, or government agency pressures you to act immediately, keep the request secret, or pay in an unusual way. Contact the person or organization using a phone number, app, or website you already know is genuine—not details in the message.
- Unexpected links or login prompts: A message invites you to click a link, enter credentials, or provide a special code. Do not follow the link to check whether the claim is true. Reach the supposed sender or organization independently.
- Unsolicited job or task offers: A message promises easy online earnings or tasks, then shows supposed earnings and asks you to deposit money—often cryptocurrency—to unlock tasks or withdraw a balance. A demand to pay in order to get paid is a strong warning sign. The FTC advises: “Never pay anyone to get paid, or to get a job.”
- Requests tied to relationships, investments, shopping, or recovery: These are broader social-media scam patterns, not necessarily ones that begin on WhatsApp. Be cautious if someone you have not independently verified asks for money, urges secrecy, or offers to recover money you already lost in exchange for an upfront payment.
The FTC reported $2.1 billion in consumer-reported losses to scams that started on social media in 2025, in a data spotlight published in April 2026. That figure covers social media broadly; it is not a WhatsApp-specific estimate.
What to do when a message seems suspicious
- Stop engaging. Do not reply, click a link, share a code, install an app, or send money.
- Check the claim independently. Contact the person or organization using a number or app already saved or an official website you find independently. Do not rely on contact details supplied in the suspicious message.
- Block and report the account or message in WhatsApp. This helps you stop further contact and alert WhatsApp to the suspicious activity.
- Secure any affected accounts. If you disclosed a password or other login details, change them and turn on two-factor authentication where available. Change reused passwords on other accounts as well.
- Report the scam to the appropriate authority. In the United States, report scams at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. For Social Security number misuse or identity-theft recovery, use IdentityTheft.gov. These are US resources; elsewhere, contact your national fraud-reporting authority.
If you shared a code or lost access to your account
Use WhatsApp’s official recovery process rather than responding to anyone offering to recover the account. WhatsApp Help Center instructions say to register your phone number again and enter the six-digit code delivered by SMS or call. This logs out other devices connected to your account. WhatsApp says never to share your registration code with anyone, including friends or family.

- Open WhatsApp and register your phone number again.
- Enter the six-digit code sent to your phone by SMS or call.
- If WhatsApp asks for a two-step verification PIN you do not know, its Help Center says you may need to wait seven days before trying again. Do not give a recovery or verification code to anyone who contacts you.
- After regaining access, review linked devices in WhatsApp and log out any you do not recognize.
- Tell friends and family your account may have been compromised, especially if messages could have been sent in your name.

If you sent money or exposed personal information
If you paid
Contact the bank, card issuer, payment app, or transfer provider you used as soon as possible. Ask whether the payment can be stopped or reversed. Recovery depends on the payment method and timing, so do not assume a transfer can be undone. In the United States, the FTC’s What To Do if You Were Scammed guidance explains steps to take after a payment.

If you shared identity or account details
Change exposed passwords, secure accounts that reused them, and enable two-factor authentication where available. If your Social Security number was misused or you need identity-theft recovery steps in the United States, use IdentityTheft.gov. Readers elsewhere should contact their national identity-theft or fraud authority and their financial provider.

In an August 25, 2026 announcement, Meta said WhatsApp was strengthening two-step verification from a six-digit PIN to a longer alphanumeric password, adding context for some calls from unknown numbers on Android, and supporting passkeys. Availability may vary, so check your current app rather than assuming every feature is available on your device. Meta’s January 2026 announcement described Strict Account Settings as a lockdown-style option for people facing sophisticated, rare cyberattacks—not a routine requirement for every user.
