Use Chat Lock when you want to keep a selected conversation out of WhatsApp’s inbox and shield it from someone browsing your phone. Use disappearing messages when you want new messages in a chat to stop appearing after a set time. They address different privacy risks, so you can use both; neither guarantees that another person cannot keep a copy of content you send.
What each feature protects
| Concern | Better fit | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Someone else may open WhatsApp on your phone or see a notification | Chat Lock | Moves a selected one-to-one or group chat from the inbox into a locked folder that requires your device password or biometric authentication. Chat contents are hidden in notifications. Meta’s May 2023 announcement also identifies shared-phone situations as a use case. |
| You do not want new messages to remain visible in a chat indefinitely | Disappearing messages | Applies a timer to new messages in the chat. Meta’s December 2021 announcement listed 24-hour, seven-day and 90-day durations; check the choices available in your current app. |
| You want one feature to provide both protections | Neither alone | Chat Lock concerns access to a thread on your device; disappearing messages concern how long new messages remain visible in the conversation. Meta describes both as additional privacy layers alongside end-to-end encryption. |
What Chat Lock does—and does not do
Chat Lock is a local-access control for a selected conversation, not a timer. It moves that thread out of the main inbox and into a locked folder protected by the device password or biometric authentication. Message contents are also hidden in notifications, which can help when a phone is visible or briefly in someone else’s hands.
In its May 15, 2023 announcement, WhatsApp described opening the chat’s name and selecting the lock option. It said the locked folder could be revealed by pulling down on the inbox and authenticating. These are the instructions in that dated announcement; exact menus and gestures may vary by app version and operating system, so follow the labels shown in your current WhatsApp app.
Locking a chat does not make messages disappear from the conversation after a period. It also should not be treated as protection against a recipient saving or recording content outside the controls WhatsApp describes.

What disappearing messages do—and do not do
Disappearing messages set a limited visible lifetime for new messages in a chat. They do not retroactively change messages already in the conversation. WhatsApp first announced the feature in 2020 with a seven-day setting, then documented 24-hour, seven-day and 90-day options for default timers in December 2021.
At that time, Meta said the default timer applied to new one-to-one chats and could be enabled for groups a user created. Its 2020 launch announcement separately described per-chat controls and said group admins controlled the setting in groups at launch. Those are dated descriptions, not a guarantee of current group permissions, menus or available timer choices. Check the current app before setting a timer.

A timer limits how long messages are visible in the chat; it is not a promise that nobody can preserve them. The official feature descriptions explain the timer behavior but do not establish universal protection against copying or recording content outside WhatsApp’s controls.
Choose by the risk you want to reduce
Choose Chat Lock for casual access to your phone
Use it for a particular one-to-one or group conversation you do not want visible in the regular inbox, especially if another person may handle or browse your phone. Its notification hiding is relevant when message previews could be seen on screen.

Choose disappearing messages for a shorter-lived chat history
Use a timer when you want new messages in a conversation to have a limited visible lifetime rather than remain in the chat indefinitely. Remember that the timer’s scope is new messages, not older history.
Use both when both risks matter
The controls address different layers: Chat Lock restricts access to a selected thread on your device, while disappearing messages time the visibility of new messages in the conversation. Meta presents them as additional privacy measures, not replacements for end-to-end encryption, which it describes as the foundation for WhatsApp calls and messages in its June 2023 privacy announcement.

What neither setting can promise
Neither feature should be treated as a guarantee that a recipient cannot keep a copy of a message. The official descriptions establish the locked-folder and timer behavior, but they do not establish that these controls prevent every way of saving or recording content outside the app. Use them to reduce the specific visibility risks they address, and be thoughtful about what you send.
