October 2026 brings three good reasons to look up: Saturn reaches opposition on October 4, the Orionid meteor shower peaks overnight October 21–22, and the Moon passes near the Pleiades overnight October 27–28. A crescent Moon also appears near Jupiter before sunrise on October 6. Exact viewing times and conditions depend on your location, so check a local sky map and forecast before heading out.
October 2026 skywatching calendar
| Date | What to look for | Viewing tip |
|---|---|---|
| October 4 | Saturn at opposition | It rises around sunset and remains visible for much of the night. |
| Before sunrise, October 6 | Crescent Moon near Jupiter | Look toward the Moon and Jupiter before dawn; the exact time and apparent spacing vary by location. |
| Night of October 21 into October 22 | Orionid meteor shower peak | Try the few hours before dawn, after moonset, from a dark location. |
| Night of October 27 into October 28 | Moon near the Pleiades | Look east in the evening as the pair climbs higher. |
NASA/JPL’s October guide lists the Moon’s phases as last quarter on October 3, new Moon on October 10, first quarter on October 18, and full Moon on October 25. These phases help explain why moonlight is a factor for the Orionids later in the month.
When to see Saturn in October 2026
Saturn reaches opposition on October 4. Opposition occurs when Earth passes between the Sun and an outer planet, so Saturn appears opposite the Sun in our sky. In practical terms, NASA says Saturn rises around sunset and stays visible for much of the night, making it convenient to look for during the evening and overnight hours.
Use a local sky chart to identify Saturn’s position from your location; the NASA guide does not give local rise or set times. NASA/JPL’s guide also notes that Saturn’s north-polar hexagon-shaped jet stream spans nearly 20,000 miles. That is a figure reported in the 2026 guide, not a new measurement made in 2026.

How to watch the Orionids on October 21–22
The Orionids are produced by debris left by Halley’s Comet. Their apparent radiant—the direction from which the meteors seem to emerge—is in Orion, but individual meteors can streak across any part of the sky. Watch a broad area rather than staring only at the constellation.
A bright waxing gibbous Moon will wash out some of the fainter meteors. NASA recommends trying the few hours before dawn, after moonset, and choosing a dark location away from bright lights. The guide does not provide a predicted hourly meteor count for October 2026, so treat the shower as an opportunity to watch rather than a guaranteed number of sightings.

Finding the Pleiades near the Moon
On the night of October 27 into October 28, look east in the evening for the Moon and the Pleiades as they rise higher. NASA describes the Pleiades as a slightly fuzzy grouping of six to seven stars. You can see the cluster with the unaided eye; binoculars or a telescope are optional if you want more detail.
If you are new to skywatching, start by looking for the compact, hazy-looking cluster without equipment. Binoculars can make its stars easier to distinguish, while a telescope offers another way to explore more detail, but neither is required to find it.

Plan around your location and the conditions
NASA’s monthly highlights give event dates and broad viewing guidance, not city-specific rise and set times or weather. For a practical plan, use the NASA Night Sky Network planner to find sky maps and viewing-condition predictions, then check a local forecast for clouds and visibility. Moonrise and moonset, the horizon, and light pollution can change how useful a given viewing window is.
