VLC Media Player is the best FLV player for most people. It is free, works across desktop and mobile platforms, and usually plays FLV files without a separate codec pack. Download it from VideoLAN’s official site. If VLC cannot play a particular file, the cause may be the file’s condition or the codecs inside it—not a need for a special FLV-only app.
Which FLV player should you choose?
FLV is a container format, not a single video codec. Two files ending in .flv can contain different audio and video streams, so compatibility depends partly on how each file was encoded. A general-purpose player is usually a better choice than an app marketed only for FLV.
| Player | Platforms | Best for | Cost | Main limitation | Official source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| VLC | Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS | Most people and cross-platform use | Free, open source | Some damaged or unusual files can still fail | VideoLAN |
| mpv | Windows, macOS, Linux | Advanced playback, keyboard control, and customization | Free, open source | Less beginner-friendly; installation varies by system | mpv installation |
| PotPlayer | Windows | A traditional player with extensive settings | Free, according to its product page | Windows-only; its many options may overwhelm new users | PotPlayer |
| IINA | macOS | A Mac-oriented interface backed by mpv | Free, open source | macOS-only | IINA |
| Celluloid | Linux | A graphical interface for mpv | Not stated by the cited project page | Package availability varies by distribution | mpv project recommendations |
| Elmedia Player | macOS | Mac users who need casting or TV-streaming features | Free download; paid-feature pricing not stated here | Extra features are unnecessary if you only need to open an FLV | Elmedia Player |
Why VLC is the best default
VLC is free and open source, has versions for desktop and mobile, and is designed to handle a broad range of media without requiring users to install codec packs for many common formats. VideoLAN’s download page lists VLC 3.0.23 for Windows; that version number is specific to the Windows listing and should not be assumed to apply to every platform or build. See the current platform choices at VideoLAN’s download page. VLC is a general recommendation, not a guarantee that every file will play.
Get VLC from VideoLAN rather than a download aggregator or a site advertising a codec bundle. An unfamiliar “FLV player” installer may add unwanted software, browser extensions, or advertising. A separate Flash Player plug-in is not needed to play an FLV file locally.

Best alternatives by operating system
Windows: mpv for control, PotPlayer for menus
mpv suits experienced users who want a configurable playback engine, keyboard-driven controls, or scripts. Its project describes it as a command-line media player, so its basic interface and setup can be less approachable than VLC. Windows builds are often distributed by third parties rather than through one conventional installer; use the project’s installation guidance to choose a source. Hardware decoding may need to be explicitly enabled with --hwdec; it is not necessarily on by default.
PotPlayer is a Windows-only alternative for people who want many built-in controls for subtitles, audio, and playback. Its product page advertises DXVA, CUDA, and QuickSync hardware-acceleration options, as well as support for Windows 7 through 11 and 32-bit and 64-bit builds. Those are vendor-listed features, not independent performance comparisons.

macOS: IINA for a Mac-style interface
IINA uses mpv as its playback engine while providing an interface designed for macOS, with features such as Picture in Picture, system media controls, gestures, subtitles, and plugins. Its official site lists version 1.4.4 and support for Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 12 or later and Intel Macs running macOS 10.15 or later. These are the requirements and version listed on the site; check it for current release details.
Choose VLC instead if you want to use the same player on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS. Elmedia is another Mac option if you specifically need the casting and streaming features it advertises, including AirPlay, Chromecast, Roku, Android TV, and DLNA-compatible devices; those features are not necessary for basic local playback.

Linux: VLC for simplicity, mpv or Celluloid for customization
VLC is the easiest starting point for most Linux users. Advanced users can install mpv, while Celluloid offers a graphical front end for it. Installation methods and package versions vary among Linux distributions; the mpv installation page notes that distribution packages may be outdated and provides distribution-specific options.
Android and iPhone: try VLC first
VLC has official Android and iOS versions listed on VideoLAN’s site. Mobile playback can differ from desktop because of the device’s operating system, hardware decoder, and the codecs inside the file. If an FLV plays on a computer but not on a phone, converting it to MP4 may be more reliable than trying a series of unfamiliar apps.

How to open an FLV file in VLC
- Download VLC for your operating system from VideoLAN’s official page, then install it using the normal installation options.
- Open VLC. On Windows or Linux, select Media > Open File; on macOS, use VLC’s file-opening command.
- Select the
.flvfile and choose Open. You can also drag the file into the VLC window. - If you want VLC to open FLV files by default, use your operating system’s Open with or file-association controls to select VLC. The wording and location vary by system and desktop environment.
When playback works, the video should appear and the seek bar should let you move through it.

A failed file does not automatically mean you need another FLV player. The file could be incomplete, damaged, mislabeled, or encoded with streams your player cannot decode. Work through these checks in order:

- Try another player. Open the file in mpv or, on Windows, PotPlayer. If it works there, the issue may be VLC-specific or related to its configuration.
- Check that the download is complete. Compare its size with the expected size, if known, or obtain the file again. A partial download can stop early, show a blank screen, or contain only one playable stream.
- Temporarily disable hardware decoding in VLC. Look in VLC’s input and codecs preferences for the hardware-acceleration setting. The exact label and menu layout depend on the VLC version and platform. This is a useful check when video is black, stutters, or behaves differently from audio.
- Check audio and video separately. If there is picture but no sound, inspect VLC’s audio-track selector and test the file in another player. If sound plays against a black picture, suspect the video stream, decoding, or graphics path. Either stream may be damaged.
- Verify the extension. Renaming another kind of file to
.flvdoes not convert it. Use VLC’s media information panel or a media analyzer to inspect the streams and codecs. - Consider performance bottlenecks. Stuttering can result from a high-bitrate file, limited processor or graphics capability, disabled hardware decoding, a poorly encoded file, or a slow network or external drive. mpv documents hardware decoding as an option that can help when the CPU cannot decode in real time, but it may require configuration: mpv project documentation.
- Convert only if needed. If the file is readable but incompatible with a device or app, make an MP4 copy as described below. Conversion will not reliably repair severe corruption.
Installing multiple codec packs is not a good first fix. VLC, mpv, and PotPlayer have their own playback components or codec support, and extra packs can add security risks or conflicts.
When to convert FLV to MP4
Make an MP4 copy if a phone, TV, presentation system, website, or editing application rejects FLV, or if you want a format with broader modern-device support. H.264 video with AAC audio is a common compatibility target. Use FFmpeg or another reputable converter, and keep the original until you have checked the converted file.
Conversion can re-encode the streams and reduce quality. If the existing streams are already compatible with the target container, remuxing may preserve the encoded audio and video without re-encoding; whether that is possible depends on the file’s streams and the tool. Neither approach restores information missing from a badly damaged file.
FLV video is not the same as Flash content
An FLV is a video file you can open in a standalone media player. An old SWF animation, Flash game, or Flash-based website is a different kind of content and will not necessarily run in VLC or another FLV player. Those require a Flash-content preservation or emulation solution; installing an obsolete browser plug-in is not a normal way to play local video.

Usually not, particularly for private or sensitive videos. A browser service may require uploading the file to a third party, impose size limits, take time to process, or disappear or change its policies. A local player such as VLC avoids that upload and is the simpler choice when installing software is possible.
