Your phone can still use battery while its screen is off: apps and system services may sync photos, fetch mail, play music, or handle other background tasks. To see which apps used power, check Battery settings on your iPhone or Android phone. These records help identify battery use, but they are not a complete log of everything an app did or proof of improper activity.
What is my phone doing overnight?
A screen-off phone is not necessarily idle. Background work can include syncing, fetching updates, playing audio, or other tasks. Apple lists directions, music playback, photo syncing, and mail fetching as examples of background activity in its iOS 26 battery usage guide.
Battery use can also reflect factors beyond an app doing visible work. Apple notes that poor cellular coverage and notifications waking the device can affect usage. A battery report shows energy use and activity categories for a selected period; it does not reveal every action an app took or how much personal data it sent.
How do I check background app activity on iPhone?
- Open Settings > Battery. Review App and System Activity for the current view.
- Choose a day for more detail. Open View All Battery Usage, select the day you want, then scroll through app and system activity. Tap an app to see more information.
- Compare on-screen and background use. “On screen” refers to activity while an app or system task was visible. “Background” refers to activity while it was not on screen. Background time does not, by itself, indicate suspicious behavior.
Apple’s iOS 26 guide says additional battery usage information is available for today and the previous week. The display helps you compare periods and find contributors to battery use, rather than providing a full audit of app behavior.

Use App Privacy Report for privacy details
Battery usage and privacy reporting answer different questions. To see selected data and sensor access and network activity, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > App Privacy Report and turn it on. Apple says the report covers activity from the prior seven days, but it starts gathering information only after activation; details may take time to appear. It is not a battery report or a record of every background action. See Apple’s About App Privacy Report.
What if an iPhone’s battery use seems unusual?
Compare more than one day and check any suggestions or Insights shown in Battery settings. Apple says iOS 18 and later may identify temporary background activity, such as an ongoing update or device setup. Low Power Mode can reduce or disable some features, including Background App Refresh; that can conserve power, but may affect when apps refresh.

How do I check background app activity on Android?
On a Google Pixel
- Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage.
- Select View by apps to see app-level battery use.
- Tap an app to inspect or change Allow background usage. Google recommends Optimized for most apps. Restricted can limit background use, but notifications may be delayed or the app may not work as expected. See Google’s Pixel battery usage guidance.
On other Android phones
Android manufacturers customize menus and settings, so the Pixel path may not match your device. Search Settings for “Battery usage” or consult your phone maker’s support page if the labels differ. Google’s Android battery guidance also notes that device steps vary.
Battery Saver can limit or turn off background activity. That may delay app updates, network activity, or other features, so consider whether you rely on an app’s syncing or timely notifications before restricting it.

Why did my battery drain while I was asleep?
Use the battery view for the overnight period to see which apps and system activity contributed to energy use. Then compare that period with another day and consider whether the phone had poor cellular coverage, notifications woke it, or a temporary task such as an update or setup was underway. A high battery-use entry identifies a power contributor, not necessarily a problem or a privacy issue.
If you decide to restrict an app, weigh the battery trade-off against what you need from it. Background limits can delay syncing and notifications or change how an app works; disabling everything is not a reliable one-size-fits-all fix.
