A detailed T-34/85 equipment account describes these uses; it does not establish that every tank—or every army—carried or used logs the same way.
How did a tank use a log to get unstuck?
In the documented T-34/85 example, the crew fastened a timber log across the front tracks, between the front idler and front road wheels, with metal cables. They then drove forward slowly over it. As the tracks pulled the log beneath the tank, it pressed into soft ground and gave the tracks a firmer surface to grip. The account says the crew could repeat the process as needed. What else could the log do?
Free a tank grounded on an obstacle
If the tank’s underside rested on a rock, debris, or a stump, its tracks might be unable to gain traction against the ground. The T-34/85 account says a log driven beneath the hull could catch against the obstruction and help push the tank free. T-34/85 equipment account
Help cross a ditch or trench
The same account describes using one or more logs to bridge a wide ditch or trench. It does not provide a general specification for how wide a gap a log could span or establish that this was a standard method across tank forces. T-34/85 equipment account

What does the wartime evidence establish?
Mud could immobilize tanks in combat. The Polish Army Museum records that a T-34 Model 1942 and several other T-34s became stuck in muddy terrain during the Battle of Lenino on 12 October 1943. The museum says the tank was eventually extracted at night, but does not report that a log was used in that incident. Polish Army Museum: T-34 Model 1942
The Tank Museum describes the T-34/76 as a Soviet medium tank that first saw service in 1940 and notes its mobility, armor, and armament. That context helps explain the vehicle, but it does not show how common carried logs were. The Tank Museum: T-34/76

Were logs standard equipment on all WWII tanks?
The available accounts do not establish that. The clearest description concerns a T-34/85 and calls its timber a “breaching log”; the separate Lenino account documents tanks bogging down but says nothing about logs. These sources support the log’s practical mobility uses, not a claim that all WWII tanks carried one or that armies shared a standard procedure.
