A 5W USB power adapter paired with a USB-A to Lightning cable is the historically matched choice for charging an iPhone 6s. A compliant higher-wattage adapter may also work, but Apple does not list the iPhone 6s as a model with its newer fast-charging requirements.
What wattage charger does an iPhone 6s need?
The iPhone 6s charges through USB, either from a computer or a power adapter. Apple says most iPhone models earlier than iPhone 11 came with a 5W adapter, making 5W the standard match for the 6s. Apple’s technical specifications list USB-to-computer or power-adapter charging for the model: iPhone 6s technical specifications. Apple’s adapter guidance is available at About Apple USB power adapters.
Apple’s legacy USB power-adapter documentation specifies 5 V at 1 A for its 5W adapter: Apple USB power adapter documentation. For the usual setup, use a USB-A power adapter and a USB-A to Lightning cable.
Can you use a 12W or 20W charger with an iPhone 6s?
Apple’s cited guidance does not establish a 12W or 20W adapter as an iPhone 6s fast-charging requirement. Its 18W adapter statement describes fast charging for iPhone 8 or later; its current 20W fast-charge requirements start with iPhone 12, iPhone SE (3rd generation), and later. Those newer-model claims should not be applied to the iPhone 6s.

A higher-rated adapter from a compliant manufacturer may be suitable, but the wattage printed on an adapter is its rated capability, not a promise that the iPhone 6s will charge at that rate. No specific charging-time improvement for the 6s is established here.
Which cable and adapter should you choose?
- For the simplest standard setup: choose a 5W USB-A adapter and USB-A to Lightning cable.
- If using a different adapter: match its port to the cable—for example, a USB-C adapter requires a USB-C to Lightning cable.
- For a third-party accessory: choose a reputable product that complies with applicable local regulations and safety standards. Apple permits compliant third-party power adapters and cables.
When comparing products, check the rated output and charging protocol, whether the port fits your cable, safety certification and seller authenticity, whether a Lightning cable is included and appropriately certified, and the seller’s warranty and return policy. Is the 5W Apple charger still the best choice?
It is a sound, historically matched option if you want the standard iPhone 6s charging setup. A compatible, compliant alternative can also be used; prioritize safety, a suitable cable and a trustworthy seller over choosing a charger solely because its wattage number is larger.
