In January 2011, Magneti Marelli and Wind River announced a joint, Linux-based in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) platform, initially developed for BMW. It was an enterprise software and automotive-systems project—not a consumer head unit or accessory for BMW owners. Magneti Marelli led vehicle-system integration, while Wind River provided tested GENIVI-based software and engineering services.
What did Magneti Marelli and Wind River build?
The companies described a reference platform for in-vehicle infotainment software. It was designed to provide a reusable foundation for systems that handle vehicle multimedia and connectivity, rather than a finished product sold directly to drivers. The January 26, 2011 announcement called it the automotive industry’s first GENIVI-compliant IVI solution and said the work was starting with BMW, with other automakers also in view. What did GENIVI compliance mean?
GENIVI was an open-source framework for automotive infotainment software. Its purpose was to give automakers and suppliers a shared underlying foundation, reducing the need to recreate similar software work independently across different vehicle programs. Compliance described the platform’s alignment with that framework; it did not mean every car using it would have identical features, menus or branding.
The approach was intended to support reuse while leaving room for each manufacturer to customize the system. The 2011 announcement said the solution could support multiple control-module, or “head unit,” architectures. Wind River executive Alexander Kocher described the goal as helping carmakers offer connectivity and multimedia services while preserving each brand’s distinguishing features. These were stated aims; the announcement did not publish measured savings or performance results.

Was this a BMW head unit consumers could buy?
No. The announcement concerned enterprise automotive software and integration work, with BMW as the initial OEM context. It did not announce a standalone BMW accessory, identify a retail model number, or offer the platform for direct purchase by car owners. The stated customers were automakers and automotive suppliers that could incorporate and customize the underlying platform for vehicle programs.
How did Wind River’s infotainment platform develop?
In a later product release dated October 10, 2012, Wind River described its Platform for Infotainment as a GENIVI-compliant automotive software platform. The release outlined engineering components around the software, including reference boards for ARM processors, integrated development and test tools, and Yocto Project toolchain components. Those details show how the offering extended beyond a software image: reference hardware and development tools were part of the environment intended to help automotive teams build and validate infotainment systems.
