McAfee Risk Management Solution was an enterprise security suite announced in July 2010. It was designed to correlate threat intelligence, vulnerabilities, and countermeasures already deployed so security teams could identify high-priority risks to important information and decide where to focus limited resources.

What was McAfee Risk Management Solution?

Announced in July 2010, the solution brought security information into a risk-analytics workflow rather than treating threat detection, vulnerability discovery, and mitigation as separate tasks. Its intended users were enterprise security teams assessing which assets faced the most significant risk.

McAfee senior vice president and general manager for risk and compliance Stuart McClure argued that enterprises could no longer rely on point products that were not designed to work together or connect risk identification and prioritization with mitigation. That statement describes the problem the suite set out to address; it is not evidence of measured risk reduction.

Which products were included?

Component Role described in the 2010 announcement
McAfee Risk Advisor 2.5 Dashboard and analytics component that correlated threat, vulnerability, and countermeasure information to identify critical assets at risk. Enhancements included risk scoring and advanced patch optimization.
McAfee Vulnerability Manager 7.0 Vulnerability assessment component with deep web-application scanning.
McAfee Vulnerability Manager for Databases Database-focused component that discovered databases on the network and checked for missing patches, weak passwords, default accounts, and other common vulnerabilities.

The versions listed here are the versions named in the July 2010 announcement, not a statement about current releases.

How did it connect vulnerabilities with countermeasures?

Risk Advisor served as the correlation layer. It brought threat information, vulnerability findings, and information about deployed countermeasures together in a dashboard and risk-analytics engine. That view was intended to help teams distinguish serious exposure on important assets from findings that were less urgent.

The scanning components supplied parts of that picture: Vulnerability Manager 7.0 assessed web applications, while the database product discovered databases and checked for known security weaknesses and patch status. The stated coverage also included systems and networks. Risk scoring and patch optimization were described as ways to help prioritize response, though the announcement does not provide scoring formulas, performance benchmarks, or proof of outcomes.

What did the announcement establish—and what did it not?

  • Established: McAfee announced an enterprise security suite in July 2010 with the three components listed above and a design focused on correlating threat, vulnerability, and countermeasure data.
  • Not established: The available announcement material does not supply independent adoption, efficacy, revenue, or risk-reduction statistics for the solution.
  • Historical market figure: An $800 million figure appears in a McAfee SEC filing presentation, attributed to IDC in December 2005, as a remediation market-opportunity estimate associated with McAfee’s security risk-management strategy. It is not a result, sales figure, or measured benefit of the 2010 solution.

Is McAfee Risk Advisor still available?

Current availability of McAfee Risk Advisor 2.5 and the other named legacy products is not established by the cited 2010 announcement materials. Those sources document what McAfee announced then, but do not confirm whether the products remain available, supported, or have successors under current product names.

How to assess a comparable platform

For a current enterprise risk platform, useful comparison questions follow from the capabilities McAfee described:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Which assets can it assess—such as web applications, databases, systems, and networks?
  • Can it correlate threat intelligence and vulnerability findings with countermeasures already in place?
  • How deep are its web-application and database assessments?
  • Does it provide risk scoring and patch prioritization, and can the vendor explain how those work?
  • Can it use information from the security controls and tools an organization already operates?
