Twitch said passwords, full credit-card numbers and bank details were not exposed. The leak also included other internal materials, according to contemporaneous reporting.
What happened in the Twitch breach?
Twitch’s October 15, 2021 incident update attributed the unauthorized access to “a server configuration change that allowed improper access by an unauthorized third party.” The company said it fixed the configuration issue and secured its systems.
Amazon’s Q3 2021 Form 10-Q later described an October Twitch incident in which “limited data that was extracted and exposed to the Internet.” Amazon said the investigation and assessment were continuing when it filed the report.
Axios reported on October 6, 2021, that a 125-GB torrent contained the leaked cache. That size and inventory were contemporaneous reporting; Twitch’s own description of the exposed material was narrower and is the company’s authoritative confirmation of the data categories.

What information was exposed?
Twitch said the exposed data primarily consisted of documents from its source-code repository and a subset of creator-payout data. Axios’s October 6 report described these additional contents in the torrent:
- Source code for Twitch desktop, mobile and console clients.
- Creator-payout information dating from 2019.
- Proprietary software development kits (SDKs) and code for internal AWS services.
- Internal security tools.
- An unreleased Amazon Game Studios project described as a Steam competitor.
The distinction matters: Twitch confirmed the broad categories of repository documents and payout data, while the more detailed itemization comes from Axios’s reporting on the leaked cache. The available reporting does not establish that every item in the torrent was accessed or used by an attacker beyond being included in the exposed material.

Were Twitch passwords or payment details leaked?
No, according to Twitch’s incident statement. Twitch said, “Twitch passwords have not been exposed,” and said that the systems storing login credentials were not accessed. Those credentials were hashed with bcrypt. Twitch also said full credit-card numbers and ACH or bank information were not exposed.
This is Twitch’s dated clarification of the incident. Social-media claims that passwords or complete payment details were exposed should not be treated as confirmed facts when they conflict with that statement.

Did Twitch reset stream keys?
Yes. On October 7, Twitch reset all stream keys “out of an abundance of caution.” A stream key lets broadcasting software connect to a channel; it is distinct from a Twitch account password.
Twitch said most users did not need to take manual action if they streamed through Twitch Studio, Streamlabs, Xbox, PlayStation or the Twitch mobile app. OBS users who had not linked their Twitch account needed to copy their new stream key manually. Those were the instructions for the 2021 reset; streaming-app procedures can change, so check Twitch’s current help guidance before changing a key today.

Why did the creator-payout data attract attention?
The reported payout records made some creators’ earnings more visible and intensified existing debates about pay transparency, differences between creator contracts and platform safety. The reported records dated from 2019, but the available information does not establish that the leak represented every creator’s earnings or a complete picture of anyone’s income.
TechCrunch reported that Twitch confirmed the breach and that the cache included source code, proprietary SDKs, an unreleased Amazon Game Studios project and creator-payout data. The same report quoted streamer Lucia Everblack criticizing Twitch’s safety practices: “It’s been kind of apparent that safety and security was never at the forefront of what Twitch was doing to begin with.” That was a participant’s criticism, not an official finding about the breach.
