Airoha’s Airlink AL2210 was a single-chip 802.11b wireless LAN (WLAN) radio-frequency (RF) transceiver announced in 2003. It integrated a power amplifier and several other radio components; it was not a complete Wi-Fi chipset or a consumer product sold directly to end users.
What the AL2210 was designed to do
Airoha designed the AL2210 for the RF portion of an 802.11b wireless connection. In a report dated September 17, 2003, EDN described it as a single-chip WLAN RF transceiver with an embedded power amplifier (PA). EE Times likewise characterized it as an 802.11b transceiver, emphasizing that it integrated the PA rather than relying on an external gallium-arsenide (GaAs) amplifier.
That distinction matters: the AL2210 handled radio transmission and reception, not every function needed to make a Wi-Fi device. A complete device still needed other system functions, including the digital processing that implements the wireless protocol. The announcement was about integrating the radio circuitry, not putting an entire Wi-Fi system on one chip.
What was integrated on the chip
The announcement listed an embedded PA, a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO), a low-noise amplifier (LNA), an oscillator and a balun. Together, these components supported the radio’s transmit and receive paths and reduced the number of RF parts that had to sit outside the chip.

- High-performance wireless data transmission chip NRF24L01 +, an increase of high-power PA and LNA chips, RF switches, band-pass filters and other professional full bidirectional RF power amplifier, making the effective communication distance has been greatly expanded.
- NRF24L01P + PA + LNA wireless module works in the license-free 2.4G ISM band, can be point-to-point applications can also form a star network.
- In the RF part of a large number of optimized matching debugging, making the highest transmission efficiency, the smallest harmonic, making NRF24L01P + PA + LNA wireless module to external radio equipment to achieve the lowest radio frequency interference, but also not susceptible to interference from other devices, extremely large Improve the stability of the work.
- NRF24L01P + PA + LNA wireless module is highly integrated, the size of only 41mm * 15.5mm, easy to embed in any space-stressed products.
- Customers only need to add one MCU to control NRF24L01P + PA + LNA through SPI port ,Wireless module to complete ultra-long-range wireless data transmission system design.Do not need to worry about R & D of RF part, drastically reduce R & D expense and shorten R & D cycle.
- PA: Amplifies the outgoing radio signal. Airoha’s announcement, as reported by EDN in 2003, specified output above 20 dBm at an 11 Mbps data rate.
- LNA: Amplifies weak incoming signals while aiming to limit added noise.
- VCO and oscillator: Support the frequency-generation and timing functions needed by the radio.
- Balun: Connects balanced and unbalanced signal paths in RF circuitry.
EDN said the low off-chip component count could reduce bill-of-materials cost and printed-circuit-board area. Those were potential design benefits, not a published guarantee of a particular cost saving or board-size reduction.
How Jazz Semiconductor enabled the design
Airoha designed the chip; Jazz Semiconductor manufactured it using its specialty silicon-germanium (SiGe) BiCMOS process. EE Times reported that the AL2210 used a 0.35-micron SiGe BiCMOS implementation. In this arrangement, Jazz supplied the foundry process technology that let Airoha combine RF functions—including the power amplifier—on one chip.

- nRF24L01 is a single chip radio transceiver for the worldwide 2.4 - 2.5 GHz ISM band. Compatible with Arduino and Raspberry Pi
- Applications: Wireless peripherals, remote control systems such as RC vehicles and consumer remote electronics, wireless voice transmission such as VoIP, wireless sensor networks, wireless networks, home and commercial automation
- Ultra Small: 15x29mm (including: built-in 2.4GHz antenna), for easy implementation into designs without additional hardware
- Auto-acknowledge and auto-retransmit function
- You can find several resources available online easily, such as tutorials, data sheets, and notes
EE Times’ contemporaneous analysis presented the process as a cost-effective way to combine RF performance with PA integration. Jazz was the manufacturing partner, not the designer of the AL2210. The announcement’s praise of Jazz as a foundry specializing in RF IC manufacturing came from Airoha president Michael Lu; Jazz vice president Theodore Zhu, in turn, described Jazz as Airoha’s foundry partner.
What the 2003 roadmap did—and did not—establish
At announcement, the target market was equipment manufacturers rather than individual buyers. EDN reported plans to make the AL2210 available to customers by the end of August 2003 and to distribute it through Taiwan-based original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and original design manufacturers (ODMs). The announcement said those manufacturers supplied more than 85 percent of the world’s wireless-solutions market; that was a figure attributed to the announcement, not an independently verified market measurement.

The same report projected an 802.11g version by the end of 2003 and an 802.11a/b/g combination version in the second quarter of 2004. These were forecasts made at the time, not proof that each version shipped on schedule. Airoha’s corporate history records an 802.11b RF-transceiver launch in 2003 and an 802.11a/b/g RF-transceiver launch in 2004, supporting the broader product chronology without establishing that those later products were AL2210 variants.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you still buy an AL2210 or a replacement?
The historical sources establish the chip’s announcement and OEM/ODM-oriented distribution plan, but they do not establish current retail inventory, ongoing production or an officially designated compatible replacement. The available evidence therefore does not support saying that a new AL2210 can be bought today.

- Easy to use, nice range (using antenna on both), you can send strings (text) from one point to another. If you want to automate your house without pulling cables then this device will help you well
- Wireless Transmitter Modules allow your Arduino to wirelessly comunicate with other arduinos, or with radio frequency (RF) controlled devices that operate in the same frequency (433Mhz in this case)
- They work in pairs, meaning you need both a receiver and a transmitter to comunicate with each other
- Compatible with SparkFun’s 434MHz RF transmitter and RF receiver
- This Radio Transmitter & Receiver pair is perfectly matched to allow you to control items from a distance up to 500 feet wirelessly!
If you are maintaining older equipment, identify the exact board and radio design before considering another part. An RF transceiver is not automatically interchangeable just because it supports the same Wi-Fi generation: compatibility can depend on the companion baseband, RF connections, package, board layout, control interface and firmware. Available information provides no verified drop-in replacement, so an equivalent should not be assumed from the AL2210’s 802.11b designation alone.
