Vulkan is one graphics API a PC VR application can use to render frames. In an OpenXR setup, the application and the active runtime must agree on a Vulkan graphics binding, API requirements, extensions, and a compatible graphics device. A Vulkan-capable GPU alone does not guarantee that a particular headset, runtime, and game can use Vulkan together.
What Vulkan does in an OpenXR VR application
Vulkan is a graphics API: it provides the interface an application uses to issue rendering work. OpenXR sits between the application and the active XR runtime. If the application uses OpenXR’s Vulkan graphics binding, it creates the Vulkan objects needed for its session and renders into Vulkan swapchain images provided by the runtime.
The Khronos OpenXR specification describes the purpose of the extension this way: “This extension enables the use of the Vulkan graphics API in an OpenXR application.” Read the XR_KHR_vulkan_enable specification.
Why Vulkan compatibility matters
OpenXR does not make every graphics API automatically compatible with every runtime. The application needs a graphics binding the runtime supports, and it must meet that runtime’s requirements before creating the VR session. If the binding, API version, required extensions, or graphics device do not match, session setup may fail.

Compatibility is therefore specific to the application and runtime combination, not just to the GPU. The active runtime is the implementation OpenXR applications connect to; a different runtime or software version may expose different capabilities.
What developers should check before creating a session
1. Query the target runtime’s Vulkan version requirements
Before calling xrCreateSession, use xrGetVulkanGraphicsRequirements2KHR for the target OpenXR system. The API reference says this call returns the runtime’s minimum required Vulkan version and its highest known tested version. See the API reference for xrGetVulkanGraphicsRequirements2KHR.

Treat the returned values as runtime-specific requirements, not as a universal Vulkan version for PC VR. The highest tested version is not a promise that later versions cannot work; it identifies what the runtime reports as tested or known supported. The application must still follow the runtime’s checks.
2. Check required Vulkan instance and device extensions
API version compatibility is only one part of the binding. The OpenXR Vulkan requirements also describe querying the instance and device extensions the runtime requires. An application must enable the required extensions when creating its Vulkan objects. The Vulkan binding specification details these requirements.

3. Use a physical device compatible with the runtime
The runtime can communicate which Vulkan physical device is compatible with the OpenXR implementation. On a PC with multiple GPUs, do not assume the application can choose any device independently of the runtime. Follow the binding’s device-selection requirements for the active system.
4. Verify the exact software and hardware combination
For a real compatibility check, identify the operating system, OpenXR runtime, headset, and application versions, then confirm that this configuration exposes the Vulkan path and meets the runtime’s requirements. Results for one product or runtime release should not be generalized to every headset or game.

Is Vulkan support universal across PC VR?
No. Khronos’ conformance listing shows that graphics API support varies by listed runtime and product. For example, it includes an Oculus PC runtime configuration listing Vulkan, OpenGL, and Direct3D, while listed Windows Mixed Reality HMD entries specify DirectX 11/12. These entries illustrate variation; they are not an exhaustive, current compatibility chart for every device or runtime release. Consult the Khronos OpenXR conformant products listing, and check the vendor’s documentation for the exact configuration you intend to use.

This information establishes whether the binding can be used; it does not establish that Vulkan will outperform another graphics API.
