Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11For a YouTube stream that runs around the clock, use an ingest format your encoder and internet connection can sustain continuously. YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for live video; its guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. Choose resolution and bitrate together, leave upload headroom, then test and monitor the stream.
Start with live-stream settings, not upload-file settings
A live encoder sends a real-time feed to YouTube. That is different from uploading a finished video file: YouTube’s live guidance specifies CBR and live bitrate targets, while its upload guidance recommends an MP4 container, H.264 video, and variable bitrate. Do not copy an upload preset into a live encoder without checking the live requirements.
YouTube transcodes an incoming live stream into multiple playback formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. Your main job is therefore to deliver a stable, supported ingest rather than create a separate stream for every viewer’s device. YouTube’s live encoder settings and upload encoding recommendations cover the two workflows separately.
Choose a supported video format and transport
Video codec
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. None is universally best for every encoder or workflow: choose one your encoder supports reliably at the resolution and frame rate you intend to send. For HDR, YouTube’s guidance recommends H.265/HEVC and 10-bit video; it does not support AV1 for HDR ingest in that guidance.

Ingest protocol
Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it. It is the encrypted extension to RTMP, and YouTube says it encrypts transport into and through Google’s servers. YouTube lists both RTMP and RTMPS for live ingest.
Bitrate mode and keyframes
- Set the encoder to constant bitrate (CBR).
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. Do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Confirm that the encoder is actually applying the chosen mode and interval; a saved preset alone does not prove that the outgoing stream matches it.
Match resolution and bitrate to your encoder and connection
The following are YouTube’s recommended live ingest video bitrates, in Mbps. They are not upload-file recommendations or guarantees of picture quality or uptime.

| Live resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 2160p30 (4K) | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 2160p60 (4K) | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
These are starting points from YouTube’s live encoder settings. Pick a resolution and rate your encoder can sustain; a lower stable setting is preferable to a higher rate that repeatedly outruns the connection. YouTube says total stream bitrate must fit available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. That means the usable upstream capacity should exceed the combined video and audio bitrate, with additional room for fluctuations.
YouTube automatically detects encoder settings by default. Manual resolution selection is available through custom stream-key settings. If you select a custom resolution, verify it in the encoder and stream health information rather than assuming the default detection will override it.

Frame rate
YouTube lists frame rates up to 60 fps. Choose a rate that matches the source and that the encoder can maintain continuously. As a practical content consideration—not a YouTube rule—static artwork, a slow scene, or a simple background may gain little from 60 fps, while fast motion can benefit more.
Audio
- YouTube lists AAC and MP3 for live audio ingest.
- For stereo, its recommendation is 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps.
- For 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS, AAC is required; YouTube recommends 48 kHz and 384 Kbps.
Color and HDR
- For SDR, YouTube recommends Rec. 709 and 8-bit color.
- For HDR, its guidance recommends H.265/HEVC and 10-bit color; AV1 is not supported for HDR ingest in that guidance.
Plan for continuous operation
A setting that works in a short test may fail over a longer run if the encoder, computer, or upstream connection cannot remain steady. YouTube notes that connectivity interruptions can break a stream. Test the actual upstream connection over time and avoid setting the encoder at the edge of its capacity.

- Use a wired Ethernet connection if both the encoder and router support it. A suitable Cat6 cable can be part of that setup, but a cable does not guarantee uptime.
- Test with audio and motion similar to the real programme, not only a static preview.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages while testing and during operation.
- Have a recovery plan for a dropped connection or encoder failure; settings alone cannot prevent every interruption.
YouTube also distinguishes latency from ingest format. Lower latency can increase playback buffering, so it may be less important when the stream does not depend on real-time audience interaction. DVR, when enabled, lets viewers pause and rewind a live stream. These choices affect viewing behavior, not the codec or bitrate preset.

Common problems and what to check
- Stream health reports connection problems: Reduce the bitrate or resolution, check sustained upstream capacity, and leave the recommended 20% bandwidth headroom. Check the network path and try Ethernet if supported.
- The stream does not match the selected resolution: YouTube detects encoder settings by default. If you need to choose a resolution manually, use custom stream-key settings and confirm the outgoing configuration.
- Video stutters or drops frames: The encoder or connection may be unable to sustain the chosen resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together. Test a lower setting rather than forcing a higher rate.
- Keyframe-related warnings appear: Check that the keyframe interval is 2 seconds and does not exceed 4 seconds.
- Audio is missing or sounds wrong: Confirm that an audio track is enabled and that its codec and sample rate match the intended stereo or 5.1 setup.
- HDR ingest is not accepted as expected: Check that the workflow uses H.265/HEVC and 10-bit color; AV1 is not supported for HDR ingest in YouTube’s cited guidance.
- A stream drops after running successfully: Check connectivity and encoder availability, then review YouTube’s health messages. YouTube identifies connectivity disruption as a possible cause; no single codec choice prevents network outages.
Check content rights and YouTube policies
Technical compatibility does not grant permission to stream the video or music. Before scheduling a 24/7 loop, confirm that you own or have the necessary rights to every visual and audio element, including music, artwork, and third-party clips. Also review YouTube’s current policies on copyright and monetization: repeated or reused material may raise policy issues even when it is technically streamable. A copyright safety checklist can help organize a rights review.
