If the connection is shared or varies during the day, aim for 10 Mbps or more and test it under the conditions you will actually stream in. These are practical planning targets—not YouTube-guaranteed thresholds for uninterrupted 24/7 streaming.
Why 8 Mbps is a sensible target
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends a video bitrate of 6 Mbps for 720p at both 30 and 60 frames per second. YouTube also recommends leaving 20% room between the stream’s total bitrate and the upload bandwidth available to it. Applying that margin gives 7.5 Mbps (6 Mbps ÷ 0.8), rounded to an approximately 8 Mbps planning target. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance and its streaming tips.
The 8 Mbps figure is about upload capacity—not download speed, and not merely the speed printed in an internet plan. It means sustained outbound bandwidth available to the encoder while it sends the stream. Other devices, household traffic, Wi-Fi conditions, or network congestion can reduce what is actually available. A speed test is useful, but a single result does not guarantee the same capacity throughout a continuous broadcast.
Set the encoder for the stream you are sending
For 720p, YouTube lists 6 Mbps at both 30 fps and 60 fps. Its encoder guidance includes RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 options; it recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. Use settings supported by your encoder and follow the current YouTube table for the video format you choose. YouTube’s encoder guidance also recommends running a speed test to check upload bitrate.

YouTube transcodes an incoming live stream into multiple playback formats, so you do not need to send separate feeds for viewers using different playback qualities. This does not reduce the upload capacity your encoder needs to send its selected 720p stream.
Check the real connection before going live
- Connect the streaming computer by Ethernet if possible. YouTube recommends Ethernet for live streaming from a computer. A wired path can avoid some wireless variability, but it cannot add bandwidth beyond what your internet service and network provide. See YouTube’s live filming tips.
- Measure upload on the network path you will use. Run a speed test at the location and time you expect to stream. Repeat under realistic household or workplace load; a result taken on a quiet network may not reflect bandwidth available during the broadcast.
- Run an unlisted test with representative content. Include the expected audio and cartoon movement, then monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators. YouTube warns that network disruption can interrupt a live stream; a test helps expose problems before a public broadcast.
- Keep headroom. If the measured upload available to the encoder falls near the 6 Mbps stream bitrate, the 20% margin is absent. Around 8 Mbps sustained availability is a more reasonable minimum planning target; a shared or variable connection benefits from more, such as 10 Mbps or above.
24/7 operation is more than a speed test
YouTube’s reviewed encoder and network guidance does not specify a special upload bitrate for 24/7 broadcasts or for cartoon content. The 6 Mbps 720p setting and the headroom calculation address network capacity; they do not establish that an ISP connection, router, computer, or power supply will stay available continuously. Validate the complete setup and check the reliability and terms of the service available in your location. A bandwidth test alone cannot promise uninterrupted operation.

YouTube’s advice to have upload speed 1.5 to 2 times the combined target bitrate is for streaming to multiple platforms at once. It is not the single-stream requirement for this case. See YouTube’s guidance for streaming across platforms.
