For one YouTube stream, start with the encoder bitrate for your chosen resolution, frame rate and codec, then allow at least 20% extra upload capacity. For example, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30 H.264, so the basic upload target is 17.5 Mbps. That is a starting point, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming: shared household use and changes in usable speed require additional margin.
In India, check the typical upload speed for the specific broadband plan and service area—not the advertised download speed. Measure the connection where the encoder will run and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages during a test broadcast.
Upload speed targets by resolution, frame rate and codec
YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrate varies by resolution, frame rate and codec. The upload targets below apply YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom to each recommended bitrate: target = bitrate ÷ 0.8, or bitrate × 1.25. The resulting upload figures are arithmetic estimates, not separate YouTube requirements.
| Resolution and frame rate | AV1/H.265 bitrate | AV1/H.265 upload target | H.264 bitrate | H.264 upload target |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps | 7.5 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 6 Mbps | 7.5 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 12.5 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 17.5 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 15 Mbps | 17 Mbps | 21.25 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 15 Mbps | 18.75 Mbps | 21 Mbps | 26.25 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 24 Mbps | 30 Mbps | 34 Mbps | 42.5 Mbps |
| 4K/2160p30 | 30 Mbps | 37.5 Mbps | 42 Mbps | 52.5 Mbps |
| 4K/2160p60 | 35 Mbps | 43.75 Mbps | 50 Mbps | 62.5 Mbps |

How to choose a plan in India
Check the plan’s upload figure
A broadband plan’s download-speed headline does not tell you its upload speed. TRAI says it does not prescribe a minimum broadband download or upload speed; providers must indicate typical download and upload speeds in tariff offerings. Compare the typical upload speed for the precise plan and your service area. TRAI points consumers to the MySpeed app or portal to measure connection speed. See TRAI’s BroadBand guidance.
Treat provider examples as local, not universal
Provider terms and availability vary. Airtel’s broadband page lists advertised plan speeds and notes that some plans are available only in select geographies; the cited page does not establish upload speed for each tier. Jio’s comparison page includes an example with 30 Mbps upload and 30 Mbps download. Neither page establishes a nationwide comparison or guarantees sustained performance at a particular address. Test the connection before going live
- Set the encoder target. Choose resolution, frame rate and codec, then use YouTube’s recommended bitrate as your starting point.
- Reserve headroom. Keep at least 20% above the total bitrate being sent. For example, a 10 Mbps stream calls for 12.5 Mbps of available upload capacity before accounting for other use.
- Measure at the streaming location. Test the actual outbound connection where the encoder will run. Repeat at different times if the connection varies, and compare the result with the plan’s stated typical upload speed.
- Prefer Ethernet for a computer encoder. YouTube recommends a wired connection. Ethernet can improve the local link between the computer and router; it cannot increase the upload capacity supplied by the ISP.
- Run a representative test. Include audio and video with the kind of movement expected in the stream. Account for household devices, simultaneous uploads and any other streams.
- Monitor YouTube stream health. If YouTube reports problems or the connection cannot sustain the target, reduce resolution, frame rate or bitrate and test again.
YouTube recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate and monitoring the stream. Its guidance is available in Streaming tips, encoder settings and Filming tips.
What changes for a 24/7 broadcast?
YouTube’s cited guidance does not set a special universal speed multiplier for a 24/7 stream. The bitrate calculation is the same, but continuous operation makes sustained capacity, competing network use, power continuity and monitoring important. A speed test is a snapshot; it does not prove the connection will remain stable all day. Use realistic tests and retain more spare capacity if other people or devices share the connection.

One stream versus simulstreaming
The 20% headroom calculation above is for a single stream. If you send simultaneous streams to multiple destinations, YouTube advises adding their target bitrates and aiming for upload speed 1.5–2 times the combined total, especially on shared connections. Do not substitute that multiple for the single-stream guidance. See YouTube’s Stream across platforms guidance.
