For a 24/7 YouTube lecture stream, choose upload capacity based on your encoder bitrate—not on the fact that the stream runs all day. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the stream’s total bitrate. At YouTube’s recommended H.264 settings, that means about 17 Mbps of available upload for 1080p at 30 fps, or about 10 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. Allow more if other people or devices share the connection.
How much upload speed do common lecture settings need?
The figures below apply YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom to its recommended H.264 video bitrates. They are baseline planning numbers, not guarantees: they do not include capacity needed by other network activity or account for fluctuations in your actual upload performance.

The recommended bitrates are for video. YouTube’s headroom guidance is for the total stream bitrate, so include audio and any other stream data when calculating the connection capacity you need. If you send a primary and a backup stream, include both in the total. The table’s baseline figures are therefore a starting point; use additional margin where needed.
These are broadcaster upload requirements for sending a stream to YouTube. They are not the combined download speeds needed by viewers: YouTube transcodes live streams into formats for playback.

Choose resolution and frame rate for the lecture
Pick settings that balance the available upload capacity with what viewers need to see. A lecture centered on slides or screen sharing may have less motion than a camera-heavy presentation, but the cited bitrate guidance does not establish one universally best resolution for lectures. Check that text and diagrams remain readable at the chosen setting, and test the actual material rather than assuming a resolution will suit every presentation.
- If the connection cannot reliably sustain the chosen bitrate plus headroom, reduce the resolution or bitrate.
- Use a higher frame rate only when it serves the presentation and the connection can support the corresponding setting.
- Confirm that your encoder supports the selected codec and settings before relying on them for a continuous broadcast.
Measure and verify your real upload capacity
- Set the intended encoder settings first. Note the video bitrate, audio bitrate and whether you plan to send more than one stream.
- Measure outbound upload speed. A download-speed result does not answer this question; download is often faster than upload. Use a test on the connection and machine you will actually stream from.
- Compare available upload with the total stream bitrate. Preserve at least YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and account for other household, campus or office traffic. Advertised service speed may not all be available to the streaming computer.
- Run a realistic test stream before depending on the setup. Include audio and movement similar to the lecture, and confirm that the result is stable and legible.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream health while live. YouTube recommends testing before starting and monitoring stream health during the event.
YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. A speed-test result is only a snapshot; it does not establish that a connection will remain stable for 24 hours or longer. YouTube’s cited guidance does not specify a special test duration or guarantee uptime for 24/7 broadcasts, so test the complete setup before relying on it and keep monitoring it.

What to do if upload capacity is not enough
- Reduce the stream bitrate or resolution. Then repeat the realistic test and check readability.
- Reduce competing network traffic. On a shared connection, other users and devices can consume capacity needed by the stream.
- Look for a connection with more reliable upload capacity. Compare the upload rate and reliability available in your location; no particular provider or plan is established here.
- Consider Ethernet if your equipment has compatible ports. A wired local connection may be a practical setup choice, but it cannot raise the internet service’s provisioned upload speed or guarantee stability.
