1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen analyzing a League of Legends draft, look for the plan each team’s champions could enable, the conditions that plan requires, and how it clashes with the opponent’s plan. A draft can suggest a route to success; it cannot tell you who will win, because execution, game state, and patch-specific factors still matter.
Start with the match context
Before judging champion choices, establish the patch, game mode or competition, side selection, and draft order. Those details shape which champions are available, what a pick may reveal, and whether a mechanic or strategy applies. Riot’s League of Legends homepage listed Patch 26.20 as released October 6, 2026; any claim about current champion strength should be tied to the patch and competition being discussed. Riot Games’ League of Legends homepage
Draft procedures also vary. Riot’s announcement for Ranked 5s described Tournament Draft as three bans, three picks, two bans, and two picks. Riot said the format was intended to encourage coordination, protect counterpicks, and let teams adjust strategy as they receive new information. Do not assume that sequence applies to every queue or event; check the rules for the match. Riot’s Ranked 5s and Tournament Draft announcement
Read bans as constraints, not proof of intent
Bans show which options were removed from consideration. They may deny an opponent a priority champion, protect a team’s intended choices, or respond to a particular matchup or strategy. But a ban alone does not prove a team feared a champion, just as a pick does not prove a fixed plan. Treat those explanations as interpretations unless players or coaches have confirmed them.

Pick order matters for the same reason: early choices expose information, while later choices can respond to what has already been revealed. When reviewing a draft, note which parts of either lineup were visible early and which decisions may have been made with more information.
Infer what each team’s lineup is trying to do
Ask what the selected champions might let a team accomplish, rather than assigning a composition label based on one champion. Riot’s own examples include a team trying to create an early-game teamfight advantage and a front-to-back teamfight composition that does not need to win early. Analysts also commonly discuss plans such as poke, split push, or protecting a carry, but those are useful descriptions—not a complete official taxonomy.

Timing
Identify whether a team appears to need early pressure or can wait for a later point in the game. A composition built around an early advantage has a different task from one whose plan can come online later. Describe the timing as a plausible requirement, not a guaranteed result.
Fight conditions
Consider what would let each side take a favorable fight: who can start it, who can follow up, and what the opponent might do to avoid or disrupt it. A lineup’s apparent strength matters only if players can create the conditions it needs.

Role and matchup fit
Check whether the roles and matchups appear to support the inferred plan. Look for the lanes or game moments that could create pressure, and ask what opportunity a team would need to exploit. Avoid treating a perceived matchup advantage as decisive without considering how the actual game develops.
Compare the two plans directly
Evaluate both drafts using the same questions. This makes the comparison more useful than listing each team’s champions in isolation.

- Information: What did early picks reveal, and which later selections may have been protected as counterpicks?
- Patch and rules: Could a patch mechanic or competition-specific draft format change the reading? Verify it for the match rather than generalizing.
The key question is whether one side can force the game to move at a time or in a way that suits its plan before the other side reaches its preferred conditions.

In its 2020 article on professional balance, Riot defined champion “presence” as the aggregate of picks and bans and said it used presence rather than win rate alone as a measure of power in professional play. Riot explained that professional match samples on a patch can be small, making win rate less reliable for balance decisions. Presence can therefore indicate selection priority in a particular professional context; it does not prove that a champion will win or determine which completed draft is better. Historical figures illustrate why the context must stay attached. Riot reported that at Worlds 2019, 62% of champions were picked or banned at least once and 41% had at least 5% presence. In 2020, Riot stated a goal of 67 unique champion picks with at least 5% presence at Worlds; that was a target, not a reported result. None of these figures describes the current patch or a current tournament. Riot Games’ professional-play balance article
Check patch-specific mechanics before drawing conclusions
Some mechanics can change how lane matchups or early decisions should be interpreted. For example, Riot’s Patch 26.1 notes tied role quests to selected positions and described rewards for playing out lane matchups early. That is a patch-specific example, not a rule to apply automatically to every match. Check the match patch and verify that a mechanic was active before using it to explain a draft. Riot’s Patch 26.1 notes
Keep the draft separate from the result
Close an analysis by stating what the draft appears to make possible and what conditions would help each team realize that possibility. Then let the game determine whether the players convert it. Riot’s professional-balance discussion also notes that the professional meta affects whether a champion is selected, another reason not to treat raw selection or match results as a simple verdict on draft quality.
