There is no single required next show after a DC superhero series: choose by what you liked. For an unusual, emotionally bruised team, try Doom Patrol; for a grounded crime story, choose The Penguin; and for classic animated heroics, start Superman: The Animated Series. These are different kinds of follow-ups, not one shared viewing order.
Choose your next DC series by what you enjoyed
| What you want next | Try | Why it fits | Format and continuity |
|---|---|---|---|
| An eccentric, vulnerable group | Doom Patrol | A team of superpowered people shaped by accidents and social rejection investigates strange phenomena; the series mixes action, comedy, and drama. | Live action. A useful ensemble match; no specific viewing order is established here. |
| A grounded comic-book crime story | The Penguin | Colin Farrell stars as Oz Cobb in an eight-episode crime-and-gangster story. | Live action. Continues Matt Reeves’ The Batman crime saga, rather than serving as a general continuation of every DC series. |
| Animated superhero adventure | Superman: The Animated Series | A classic series centered on Superman’s battles against villainy, with action, adventure, and science fiction. | Animation; aired from 1996 to 2000. |
These recommendations match official descriptions and story connections, not comparative ratings or a claim that one series is objectively best. DC’s TV catalog is a good place to browse further; it lists live-action and animated options including Creature Commandos, Batman: Caped Crusader, My Adventures with Superman, and Superman & Lois.
Pick the branch that suits your mood
If the team dynamic mattered most
Start with Doom Patrol if you want another ensemble, especially one built around outsiders rather than a conventional polished hero squad. DC describes its members as superpowered people scarred by accidents and social rejection, brought together to investigate strange phenomena. Expect a mix of action, comedy, and drama, not just straightforward superhero battles. DC’s series page identifies the show as running from 2019 to 2023.
If you want a sharp change of tone
Choose The Penguin for a crime-world character focus instead of a broad superhero-team adventure. Its eight episodes follow Oz Cobb, played by Colin Farrell, and DC describes it as continuing the crime saga begun by Matt Reeves’ The Batman. That makes it an adjacent branch for viewers interested in Gotham’s criminal world, not a universal next chapter for unrelated DC shows. See DC’s official series description.
#1 Best Overall
If animation is the draw
Superman: The Animated Series offers a different format and a clear central hero. DC describes the 1996–2000 series as action, adventure, and science fiction focused on Superman’s battles against villainy. It is a natural pick if you want animated superhero storytelling rather than a live-action ensemble or crime drama. DC’s series page gives the show’s dates and premise.
Do not assume every DC show shares a timeline
DC projects occupy more than one continuity. In its August 11, 2025 overview, DC Studios distinguished projects in its shared DC Universe from work outside it; the article discussed Superman and Peacemaker season two in the shared-universe context while placing Matt Reeves’ Batman projects outside that continuity. The Penguin is specifically tied to Reeves’ The Batman saga. If continuity matters to you, follow the named saga a show belongs to rather than treating the entire DC catalog as one chronological marathon. The 2025 overview describes plans and distinctions at publication, not a guaranteed future release schedule. Read DC Studios’ overview.

Check where a show is available before you settle on it
Streaming rights vary by country and change over time. DC’s catalog helps identify its series, but it does not establish a complete, current list of services for every region. Check the streaming catalogs available in your country before planning a watch; DC’s June 2023 article about titles on Max is historical and should not be treated as a current availability guarantee.
