For the closest match to Alien: Isolation, start with Amnesia: The Bunker. It puts you in a vulnerable first-person role against a persistent, largely unscripted monster, and makes noise and scarce resources matter. For other kinds of that hunted feeling, try A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead, Routine, Outlast, or the Jack Baker sections of Resident Evil 7. If what you want most is a ruined space station, Dead Space and Prey deliver the setting—but give you much more power to fight back.

This ranking is about resemblance to Isolation’s stealth and helplessness, not a claim that one game is better than another. It also separates the 1979 film’s slow, hunted horror from the more action-oriented Aliens mood.

What makes a game feel like Alien: Isolation?

The strongest matches reproduce the feeling of being prey, not simply the presence of aliens or a spaceship. Alien: Isolation is a 2014 first-person stealth survival-horror game from Creative Assembly and Sega. You play Amanda Ripley, who reaches the failing Seegson station Sevastopol in 2137, fifteen years after Alien (1979), and discovers a Xenomorph that cannot be killed.

Its signature tension comes from a few systems working together: a persistent hunter that investigates sound and sight; visibility and noise that make hiding a decision rather than a guarantee; and limited tools that can distract or briefly drive the creature off, not defeat it. The motion tracker is useful but noisy, and even a save-station visit requires a three-second card insertion during which Amanda can still be attacked. A game set in space but built around shooting crowds of enemies may share the scenery while missing this central helplessness.

The Xenomorph is often described as an enemy that “learns” your hiding habits. That shorthand overstates what the evidence supports. The more careful description is that its behavioural states and responses change as it encounters you, making its behaviour difficult to predict; that is not machine learning in the neural-network sense. Gameplay designer Gary Napper explained that repeating a fixed script would make the creature predictable and less frightening.

Which games are closest to the hunted feeling?

Start with these if you want to hide, misdirect a pursuer and worry that your next mistake will be fatal. They differ in setting and pacing, but keep the player closer to prey than to an armed action hero.

1. Amnesia: The Bunker — closest mechanical match

Frictional Games’ Amnesia: The Bunker (6 June 2023) is the strongest first recommendation for an Isolation fan looking for a similar stealth loop. French soldier Henri Clément is trapped in a First World War bunker with the Beast, a photosensitive monster that presents a largely unscripted, persistent threat. The setting is earthbound rather than interstellar, but the pressure to manage sound, light and limited supplies makes the resemblance more than cosmetic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The bunker is a semi-open sandbox with randomized item placement. Its generator needs fuel, turning light and time into practical concerns, while the dynamo flashlight is noisy enough to risk attracting the Beast. That combination of improvisation, danger and resource pressure is why this is the closest mechanical cousin in this shortlist. It was released for PS4, Windows, Xbox One and Xbox Series; a Switch version was announced in 2025 as coming later, with no date specified in the available data.

Pure Xbox called the monster reminiscent of the Alien in Isolation in April 2026. How To Video Game ranked The Bunker tenth in its 2026 Steam horror list and described it as an especially strong dose of fear. The qualification is simple: expect a bunker, not a Sevastopol-style retro-futurist station.

2. A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead — if every sound feels dangerous

Stormind Games’ 2024 game builds its stealth around creatures with super-hearing. Its basic survival question—how to move without making the sound that gets you killed—will be familiar to Isolation players. GAMINGbible described it in May 2026 as taking the Isolation formula and making its own version of helplessness.

Pure Xbox also highlighted Microphone Noise Detection, an optional headset feature that lets the creature hear real-world noise from the player. It echoes Isolation’s earlier Kinect noise feature, but you do not need that option to understand the game’s sound-focused premise. Compared with the sprawling station in Isolation, The Road Ahead is more linear. Choose it for sound-based stealth and vulnerability, not for a sprawling map or a promise that it is “better than” Isolation.

3. Routine — for retro space hardware and a moon-base mystery

Lunar Software’s Routine, released in December 2025, is the best aesthetic match among the more recent games here. It takes place on a moon base with malfunctioning security and Terminator-like patrol robots; you explore, solve puzzles and try to survive rather than relying on a full arsenal. The retro vision of the future makes it a natural fit for anyone who loves Isolation’s industrial science-fiction atmosphere.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Metro’s May 2026 coverage described it as taking clear inspiration from Isolation and delivering something on a similar level. That is a critic’s assessment, not a guarantee that the games play identically: Routine has its own setting and puzzle structure. It is listed for Xbox Series, Xbox One and PC; GAMINGbible reported Game Pass availability, which can change, so check the current catalogue before choosing it for that reason.

4. Outlast and Outlast 2 — if you want to be defenceless

The single-player Outlast games trade a space station for other hostile places, but preserve a crucial part of Isolation’s appeal: the protagonist is not equipped to win a conventional fight. You use a camcorder’s night vision, hide and run. GAMINGbible and Pure Xbox have both included the solo games among recommendations for Isolation fans, and How To Video Game described the original as an intense first-person horror game and reported it as Overwhelmingly Positive on Steam.

Expect graphic violence, gore and sexual content; the Steam store page flags these content areas. Do not confuse the single-player campaign pitch with The Outlast Trials, which is co-op and a different proposition. The available data does not establish platform availability for every entry, so check the store for the version you intend to play.

5. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard — for the early Jack Baker pursuit

The closest Isolation-like part of Resident Evil 7 is the early stretch in which Jack Baker stalks you through the family house. The first-person camera and a pursuer who is extremely difficult to stop create a memorable cat-and-mouse rhythm. GAMINGbible specifically compared the experience of being stalked by Jack with the Xenomorph’s pursuit.

Think of this as a strong match for a portion of the campaign, not a claim that the whole game keeps you helpless. Resident Evil 7 is more combat-capable overall and develops into a broader survival-horror game. VGTimes still called it the scariest mainline Resident Evil in its 2026 coverage, but individual tolerance for its horror and violence will vary.

6. Resident Evil 2 (2019) — for Mr. X and a little more agency

The 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2 turns the Raccoon City Police Department into a space you must navigate while Mr. X, the Tyrant, pursues you. As 25 Years Later put it in September 2026, the redesigned police station becomes a trap with a relentless stalker you cannot kill. That makes Mr. X a good example of the Isolation lesson inside a very different campaign.

The major difference is perspective and agency: this is an over-the-shoulder, third-person game, and you have more conventional ways to fight than Amanda does. How To Video Game reported the Steam edition as Overwhelmingly Positive and Steam Deck Verified, and cited a Metacritic score of 89 on its Steam page. Choose it if you want a pursuer who changes how you move through an environment but would rather not be entirely without weapons.

Which games match the space station but let you fight back?

Dead Space and Prey share the claustrophobic science-fiction setting, hostile creatures and resource pressure, but their combat and character progression move them away from Isolation’s helplessness. They are “same neighbourhood, more agency” recommendations—not the closest mechanical substitutes.

Dead Space (2023 remake) — for a weapon-filled trip through a wrecked ship

Motive Studio’s Dead Space remake, released 27 January 2023, brings the USG Ishimura, Necromorphs and a science-fiction horror atmosphere. Its signature combat asks you to dismember enemies’ limbs, and 3D audio adds to the ship’s sense of danger. This is a more direct action-horror answer than Isolation: you have weapons and can fight, even when the ship is still frightening.

How To Video Game described it as the best sci-fi horror game on Steam that lets you fight back and cited a Metacritic score of 87 from the Steam page it checked. Another 2026 source in the available data gave a different figure, so it is better not to treat one score as definitive. If you want a recommendation rather than a score comparison, focus on the real distinction: the remake puts you on a hostile ship, but with far more combat power than Amanda has. Start here rather than with Dead Space 3 if the goal is that atmosphere.

Prey (2017) — for an alien-threatened station you can master

Arkane Austin’s Prey takes place aboard Talos I, a space station overrun by Typhon. Mimics may pose as ordinary objects, which makes careful observation part of the tension. It is an immersive sim, so stealth, exploration and abilities can all shape how you deal with danger.

That flexibility is also why Prey is not as close to Isolation as the first six picks: you can become powerful rather than remain persistently vulnerable. The Nightmare enemy can supply a more stalker-like threat, but the game’s broader appeal is its station and its freedom of approach. Mooncrash is a separate roguelike expansion, not the main campaign.

What if I want science-fiction dread without a constant hunter?

Several games capture the lonely, hostile-world side of Isolation without reproducing its continuous cat-and-mouse pursuit. Pick one of these when atmosphere, resource tension or an unsettling setting matters more than an adaptive pursuer.

SOMA — for undersea sci-fi and existential horror

Frictional Games’ SOMA (2015) strands you in PATHOS-II, an undersea facility where you must avoid creatures and grapple with a story about identity. Its setting is science fiction and its encounters can involve hiding, but the game is less consistently about the kind of hunter-versus-prey loop that defines Isolation. A 2017 Safe Mode lets players finish the story without dying; the atmosphere remains, while the consequences of creature encounters change. How To Video Game ranked it fourth on its 2026 Steam horror list.

Signalis — for scarce supplies in a sci-fi survival-horror game

Rose-engine’s Signalis (2022) is set on a colony world and uses a top-down view and classic survival-horror inventory management rather than Isolation’s first-person stealth. Expect resource scarcity and science-fiction dread, but not a continuous, first-person stalker AI. How To Video Game reported roughly 97 percent of Steam reviews as positive.

Still Wakes the Deep — for an industrial setting and no weapons

The Chinese Room’s 2024 game moves the action to a Scottish oil rig in 1975. You hide, climb and swim without weapons, making it a strong fit if you want industrial spaces and vulnerability rather than a space station. It does not reproduce Isolation’s adaptive alien hunter, but it offers a related sense of being trapped somewhere that has turned hostile. How To Video Game noted BAFTA wins on the Steam page.

What should you expect from Alien: Isolation itself in 2026?

If you have not played the original, it remains a sensible starting point for this particular kind of horror. As of the Steam-page check cited by How To Video Game on 22 October 2026, about 93 percent of Steam reviews were positive, and the game was Steam Deck Verified. How To Video Game ranked it first in its 2026 list of Steam horror games; those are that publication’s ranking and figures, not a claim that every player will enjoy the same pacing.

The game is available on PS4 (playable on PS5), Xbox One and Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, PC, mobile, and Amazon Luna. Its original release was 7 October 2014 on PS3, PS4, Windows, Xbox 360 and Xbox One; it later arrived on Linux and OS X in 2015, Switch in 2019, and Android and iOS in 2021. The Luna version arrived in 2021. Check the relevant store for current availability in your region and on your device.

There are real caveats. The campaign runs at least 18 hours according to Inverse’s October 2024 estimate, and its slow movement, repeated hiding and long stretches of tension can wear thin. Some 2014 reviews thought the creature became overexposed or the campaign too long; Polygon’s Arthur Gies described becoming annoyed by repeated trips under tables or into lockers, while GamesRadar’s David Houghton praised the slow movement and the shift toward asking whether you will survive. The station’s save points also ask you to wait through an exposed three-second interaction. If you dislike repetition or long, slow campaigns, this may be a harder recommendation than its reputation suggests.

The original’s art direction was built to evoke Ridley Scott’s Alien (1979), not James Cameron’s more action-forward Aliens. Creative Assembly received three terabytes of original production material, and its art rule was not to invent props that the crew of the 1979 film could not have built. One reported technique for ageing CRT imagery was to record animations to VHS or Betamax and film them again on an old television. Those details help explain why Sevastopol feels like a working, worn-down industrial environment rather than a generic futuristic ship.

The game also received strong recognition despite a complicated commercial history. Sega reported more than one million copies sold worldwide by January 2015 and over 2.1 million copies in Europe and the United States by March 2015, a figure that was below the publisher’s expectations. The UK all-formats chart debut was number two behind FIFA 15. It won Audio Achievement at the 11th British Academy Games Awards and Best Audio at the 15th Game Developers Choice Awards; PC Gamer named it Game of the Year in 2014. Those historical sales figures are not a current lifetime total.

Is Alien: Isolation 2 out yet?

No. The sequel is official, but the Steam page still listed it as Coming Soon on 29 October 2026 and did not give a release date. Creative Assembly confirmed early development on the original’s tenth anniversary, 7 October 2024. Sega teased it in April 2026 with “False Sense of Security,” then formally revealed it at Summer Game Fest in June 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Windows and Nintendo Switch 2.

The official Steam description sets up a survey team on a remote colony planet that finds a mysterious crashed vessel. A woman investigates, and a deadly creature is unleashed on the settlement; she must survive and escape while being hunted. That is the confirmed setup in the store copy. It does not confirm that Amanda Ripley is the protagonist or that the story returns to Sevastopol. Treat any release-window guesses or unconfirmed protagonist claims with caution.

Which games are poor substitutes for Isolation?

A shared Alien license, a space setting or a horror label does not guarantee the same kind of game. These picks may suit other moods, but they are not close matches unless you specifically want a different format.

  • Aliens: Fireteam Elite and Aliens: Dark Descent: one is a co-op shooter and the other a real-time tactics game. They lean toward the action and Colonial Marines side of the franchise, not a solo stealth campaign. GamingScan compared Fireteam Elite more to Left 4 Dead than to Isolation.
  • Dead by Daylight’s Xenomorph chapter: a 4-versus-1 multiplayer format, not a single-player campaign built around one persistent pursuer.
  • Alien: Rogue Incursion: a VR action game starring Zula Hendricks, rather than a non-VR stealth survival-horror substitute.
  • Alien: Blackout: a mobile, Five Nights at Freddy’s-style spin-off that shut down on 31 October 2023, so it is no longer a live option.
  • Resident Evil Village, Metro Exodus and Silent Hill 2 (2024 remake): each has a different draw—stealth sections, resource management or psychological dread—but none is principally an Isolation-style continuous hunter-AI stealth game. The Steam Deck listing for the Silent Hill 2 remake was marked Unsupported in the available data.
  • Hello Neighbor: sometimes mentioned for reactive hide-and-seek AI, but its cartoon presentation is a poor aesthetic match.

How were these games picked?

The ranking follows Isolation-likeness, not overall quality. The strongest matches put the player in a first-person or similarly vulnerable role, make hiding and movement matter, and create pressure through a persistent or hard-to-stop pursuer. The middle tier keeps the hostile science-fiction setting or scarcity but adds combat or a different perspective; the final group is for readers who value atmosphere, helplessness or science-fiction dread more than the exact hunter loop.

That distinction is why a combat-heavy licensed game does not automatically rank highly, while an earthbound bunker can be a closer recommendation. Review mentions and Steam review labels above are attributed to the named publications that reported them; they are not first-hand test results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play Alien: Isolation on PS5 or Xbox Series X/S?

The game’s PS4 version is playable on PS5, and its Xbox One version is available on Xbox Series consoles. Store availability can vary by region, so check the platform store before buying.

Does Alien: Isolation have a co-op mode?

No. It is a single-player game. If you want to play a horror game with friends, co-op titles offer a different experience and will not reproduce Amanda’s solo, hunted perspective.

Is Alien: Isolation suitable for younger players?

It is an adult-oriented horror game with graphic deaths, blood and gore. The official Steam mature-content description specifically warns that the Xenomorph can kill characters in graphic ways.

Does Alien: Isolation have a story connection to the 1979 film?

Yes. Amanda Ripley is Ellen Ripley’s daughter, and the story takes place fifteen years after the original film. Amanda travels to Sevastopol after learning that the Nostromo’s flight recorder has been recovered.
