For the closest modern PC take on Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, start with Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. It was made by ArtPlay, co-founded by longtime Castlevania producer Koji Igarashi, and brings together a sprawling castle, monster-derived powers, equipment, secrets, and RPG progression. For a new official entry, Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is now available on Windows PC; for a more compact pixel-art version of the old Symphony feel, try Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth or Touhou Luna Nights.

These recommendations focus on what makes an Igavania distinct: an interconnected map, backtracking unlocked by new abilities, RPG loot, and the familiar rhythm of exploring Dracula’s castle. Stage-based NES-style action and broader Metroidvania favorites are useful alternatives, but they answer different cravings.

What makes a game Castlevania-like?

A Castlevania-like Metroidvania combines a connected world and ability-gated exploration with the gothic enemies, weapons, and RPG systems associated with Symphony of the Night and later Igarashi-era games. Fans often call that branch of the series “Igavania,” a label DualShockers uses for the Metroidvania Castlevanias from Symphony of the Night through Order of Ecclesia.

The distinction matters because “Castlevania-like” can also mean the original, stage-based games: short, discrete levels, tough enemies, and a whip as the central weapon. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night and Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth target the castle-exploration side. Infernax and Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2 are better matches for the old-school action-platformer side.

Symphony of the Night established the most familiar version of the formula: explore a castle, find a new ability or route, and return to earlier rooms with a way through. The Inverted Castle became its signature late-game twist. The game’s reported main-route completion time is about nine hours, according to How Long To Beat as cited by DualShockers in 2026.

Which PC game is closest to Symphony of the Night?

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is the strongest all-around answer. It is not an official Castlevania, but it was designed by a key figure in the series’ Igavania era and reproduces the castle, RPG progression, and monster-power loop more closely than the other current PC options.

1. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night — the essential Igavania

Koji Igarashi left Konami in March 2014 and later co-founded ArtPlay, the studio behind Bloodstained. The game, published by 505 Games, launched on PC and consoles in June 2019 after a 2015 Kickstarter. That campaign raised $5,545,991 from 64,867 backers, according to 25 Years Later’s 2026 report; EarlyGame reported $5.5 million in total collected funds and said the initial $500,000 goal was exceeded within hours.

You play Miriam, a Shardbinder exploring a labyrinthine castle. Every enemy can drop a Shard that grants a spell, summon, or passive effect, so defeating monsters is also a way to build a character. Weapons, armor, levels, hidden rooms, and late-game surprises give the exploration an RPG texture that a more purely platform-focused Metroidvania does not have. Its gothic anime presentation and broad weapon selection complete the deliberate Symphony resemblance.

The game was delayed from its planned 2017 launch to 2019 because stretch goals took longer than expected, according to EarlyGame. The same outlet reported in 2025 that it had sold millions and received free DLC support through 2024. Igarashi described it as “a starting ground” for a full Bloodstained franchise, as reported by EarlyGame.

Several reviewers have made the lineage explicit. PCGamesN called it “the next best thing to a Symphony of the Night remake” in a review updated 29 December 2025. The Outerhaven wrote, “Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, for all intents and purposes, is Castlevania,” in February 2026. Those are critics’ characterizations, not a claim that the game is an official series entry.

Choose it if: you want one modern PC game that combines a castle map, equipment, character growth, enemy powers, and the classic Igavania pace. If you want a direct Konami release instead, go to Belmont’s Curse below.

What is the newest official Castlevania to play on PC?

Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is the official choice, and it is available for Windows PC as of late October 2026. Developed by Evil Empire and Konami, it is a new Metroidvania rather than a remake of Symphony of the Night.

2. Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse — a new, official castle adventure

The game follows Rose Belmont, daughter of Trevor, through a ravaged Paris set well before Simon Belmont’s era. Its whip is more than a damage tool: Rose can grapple onto colored rings to move through the environment. Combat also includes parries, magic, perks, and a rotating roster of weapons such as brass knuckles, a throwable spear, dual rapiers, and a giant sword.

The familiar series ingredients are present—Medusa heads, skeletons, bats, cemeteries, cathedrals, sewers, and catacombs—alongside orchestral versions of classic musical themes. The AU Review described it as having “gorgeous art, challenging platforming and bosses that test everything you’ve learned,” and gave it four and a half stars out of five in October 2026. Its review also noted that the campaign is short, so this is not the pick for the longest possible castle crawl.

Accessibility options make the difficulty adjustable: players can disable death, remove boss runbacks, and raise or lower damage and XP. GameTyrant reported a free demo in October 2026. The release is described as the first new Castlevania in over 12 years; GameTyrant’s longer count of 18 years excludes the Lords of Shadow spin-offs.

Choose it if: you want a current, licensed entry with old-series imagery and modern movement. Evil Empire previously worked on Dead Cells expansions, including Return to Castlevania, but Belmont’s Curse is an authored Metroidvania rather than a roguelike run.

Which pixel-art games best capture the old Symphony feel?

Team Ladybug’s Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth and Touhou Luna Nights are the closest compact, pixel-art alternatives. Both evoke the movement and combat cadence of Symphony of the Night, but neither is an official Castlevania game.

3. Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth — closest pixel-art map feel

Team Ladybug and WSS developed this fantasy action game, whose final version arrived in 2021. Deedlit’s adventure uses elemental spirits and channels the pace of classic exploration: move through a connected labyrinth, swap abilities, and learn a boss’s patterns. The Outerhaven wrote, “If you loved Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, you’re going to love this game.” GamesRadar+ called it an “unsung hero” that goes for an old-school Symphony feel.

It is a particularly good follow-up to Bloodstained if what you want is pixel-art presentation and a familiar map-and-combat rhythm more than a large modern production. Its listed platforms include PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.

4. Touhou Luna Nights — time control in a short adventure

This is another Team Ladybug / WSS game, with PC and current-console releases. Its defining mechanic is the ability to freeze or slow time, which shapes both combat and puzzle-solving. GamesRadar+ describes it as relatively short, with more puzzle density than a typical skill gate and notably smooth pixel art.

You do not need prior knowledge of the Touhou series to understand the action. Pick it when you want a more concentrated experience than a sprawling RPG castle, and are interested in a mechanic that changes how rooms and enemies behave.

Which newer games add a different twist to the formula?

Blade Chimera keeps the whip-and-demon-slaying appeal but moves it into a cyberpunk setting. Dead Cells with its Castlevania DLC offers the licensed gothic setting in a roguelike structure rather than a single interconnected castle campaign.

5. Blade Chimera — cyberpunk weapons and fast map travel

Released on PC and Nintendo Switch in January 2025, Blade Chimera comes from Team Ladybug. Protagonist Shin is a demon hunter who befriends Lux, a demon that takes the form of a sword. The combat supports two weapon slots—one possible pairing is a full-auto machine gun and a long whip—alongside magic and sword abilities. Level-ups freeze the screen, giving progression a distinctly classic action-RPG flourish.

Its secrets include familiar Metroidvania tools such as keycards and sliding, but a notable convenience is fast travel to any square on the map. That can remove late-game backtracking chores, though it also makes the world feel less dependent on retracing routes. Digital Trends called it “the exact jolt of whip-cracking, demon-slaying 2D action you’re craving,” while also noting stiff movement and a familiar sci-fi story. Its assessment was that the systems produce a varied 2D action game, not that it is a direct Igavania replica.

6. Dead Cells + Return to Castlevania — Dracula’s Castle in roguelike runs

Dead Cells, developed by Motion Twin and released on PC in August 2018, blends action-platforming with roguelike runs. The Return to Castlevania DLC adds the series’ visual language, enemies such as harpies and skeletons, and a boss encounter with Death. It is the best fit here for readers who want to fight through Castlevania-flavored environments but do not require the continuous, authored map of an Igavania.

DualShockers called the DLC the best Dead Cells expansion and described it as strongly themed around the Igavanias. Evil Empire’s work on the expansion preceded its development of Belmont’s Curse. If the licensed world and enemies are the main attraction, the DLC fits; if you want the new Castlevania designed as a Metroidvania, choose Belmont’s Curse.

Can I play Symphony of the Night or other official Castlevania games on PC?

The available information does not establish a native PC release of Symphony of the Night; do not assume it is a Steam game. Official collections offer other routes into the series, but their current PC store listings should be checked before purchase because the available platform information is not equally clear for every collection.

The Symphony of the Night availability gap

Reported releases include PlayStation, PS3, PS4 through Castlevania Requiem, PSP, PS Vita, Sega Saturn, Xbox 360, and iOS and Android. That is a broad list across generations, but it does not confirm a native Windows version. If PC access is essential, Bloodstained is the clearest spiritual successor; if you specifically want the original, confirm availability on the platform and store you can use rather than relying on an assumed PC port.

Collections for classic and handheld-era Castlevania

The Castlevania Anniversary Collection is a way to revisit stage-based games. GameTyrant singled out Super Castlevania IV as the entry that may feel most modern and closest to Belmont’s Curse, and Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse is relevant to the Belmont family story. These are not the same kind of interconnected RPG adventure as Symphony.

Konami released the Castlevania Advance Collection in 2021 and the Castlevania Dominus Collection in 2024. The Advance set includes Aria of Sorrow, a strong GBA-era Igavania match. Dominus collects the DS trilogy—Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, and Order of Ecclesia—along with Haunted Castle. These collections are useful if you have access to a supported platform, but verify the current PC SKU in your store before treating either as a confirmed Steam purchase.

For a strictly classic, stage-based experience on PC, consider Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2. It is in the same universe as Ritual of the Night but drops the giant map and RPG grind in favor of a character-switching structure inspired by Castlevania III.

Which darker Metroidvanias are good alternatives but not true Igavanias?

Several excellent PC games share Castlevania’s gothic mood without reproducing its RPG castle formula. Choose these for atmosphere, combat, or a dark fantasy setting—not because they are the closest Symphony successors.

Blasphemous and Blasphemous 2

The Game Kitchen’s Blasphemous games draw on Catholic horror and Andalusian imagery. Blasphemous 2 launched on PC on 24 August 2023 and shifts the weapon options toward tools such as a rapier and censer, with allies able to assist in some boss fights. It remains challenging. How Long To Beat lists its main-story duration at about 16 hours, and DualShockers notes its expanded combat options. It is a strong choice if religious iconography and punishing action appeal more than loot-driven castle exploration.

Ender Lilies and Ender Magnolia

Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights is a slower, gothic adventure in which the protagonist calls on spirit summons rather than wielding a whip. How Long To Beat lists about 13 hours for the main story. DualShockers notes that limits on the number of summons can make some bosses frustrating. Its sequel, Ender Magnolia: Bloom in the Mist, was described by DualShockers as more mechanically satisfying and ranked fourth in GamesRadar+’s 2026 top 25 Metroidvanias.

The Last Faith, Vigil, and Death’s Gambit: Afterlife

The Last Faith is a bloody pixel-art gothic game with soulslike difficulty. Its reported main-story time is about 17 hours, and DualShockers labels its OpenCritic reception “Fair.” Vigil: The Longest Night is a horror-leaning alternative starring Leila; DualShockers labels its OpenCritic reception “Strong.” Death’s Gambit: Afterlife, a 2021 remaster, offers classes and hardcore dark fantasy; its reported completion time is about 15 hours for the main story or 35 for completionists, with a “Strong” OpenCritic label in DualShockers’ 2026 roundup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Timespinner, Chronicles of the Wolf, and Infernax

Timespinner is a short, solo-developed time-manipulation adventure explicitly inspired by Igavanias. It has multiple endings, and How Long To Beat lists about six hours for the main story; DualShockers labels its OpenCritic reception “Strong.” It is a suitable choice when you want the old-school structure without a long commitment.

Chronicles of the Wolf launched on Steam and consoles on 20 June 2025. It follows Mateo Lombardo, an adept of the Order of the Rose and Cross hunting the Beast of Gévaudan across castles, forests, and ruins. Its connected settings make it a more direct Castlevania-like prospect than many gothic cousins. A Steam demo was also reported.

Infernax is the pick for the NES side of Castlevania: tough enemies, branching routes, retro pixel art, and hidden items in walls. It is not a huge-map Igavania. If you want the particular old-school challenge and stage-action lineage, that difference is a feature rather than a drawback.

How should I choose by length, difficulty, and style?

Choose by the part of Castlevania you want most: an RPG castle, a licensed official adventure, a short pixel-art homage, or a gothic action game. The figures below are reported main-story completion estimates, not guarantees; play style and optional content can change the time substantially.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Game Reported main-story time What it prioritizes Difficulty or access note
Timespinner About 6 hours (How Long To Beat via DualShockers, 2026) Compact Igavania-inspired time powers Specific accessibility options not stated
Symphony of the Night About 9 hours (How Long To Beat via DualShockers, 2026) Original castle-exploration benchmark Native PC release not established
Ender Lilies About 13 hours (How Long To Beat via DualShockers, 2026) Slower gothic combat and summons Some boss fights can be difficult with summon limits
Death’s Gambit: Afterlife About 15 hours; 35 for completionists (How Long To Beat via DualShockers, 2026) Classes and hardcore dark fantasy More completionist content extends the run
Blasphemous 2 About 16 hours (How Long To Beat via DualShockers, 2026) Religious horror and weapon variety Challenging combat
The Last Faith About 17 hours (How Long To Beat via DualShockers, 2026) Bloody pixel-art gothic action Soulslike difficulty

Accessibility and challenge can matter more than estimated hours. Belmont’s Curse includes options to disable death, remove boss runbacks, adjust damage, and boost XP, making it the clearest choice here for players who want control over difficulty. GameTyrant describes Well Dweller as an accessible first entry, with an approximate 10-hour completion and a few more hours for 100 percent; it is a dark-fairytale adventure, not an Igavania clone.

For much longer exploration, Hollow Knight is a genre heavyweight, but it is not a close Castlevania match. PCGamesN describes it as taking upwards of 40 hours or more. Team Cherry’s Ari Gibson said the design aimed to make players “feel like an explorer entering uncharted lands,” as quoted by 25 Years Later in October 2026. Hollow Knight: Silksong launched on 4 September 2025, and Team Cherry reported more than seven million copies sold by December 2025; it similarly belongs to the broader Metroidvania conversation rather than the Igavania lane.

What other Metroidvanias are worth considering?

Games such as Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, Nine Sols, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Animal Well, and Crypt Custodian are prominent PC Metroidvanias, but their strengths are not specifically Castlevania’s RPG castle design. They are worth considering if you want to broaden the genre search rather than find the closest Symphony substitute.

The Lost Crown is a polished action-platformer with whip-like grappling and a useful mapping feature: Memory Shards let players pin screenshots to the map. Ubisoft reported 1.3 million units sold in its first year, below the company’s expectations, and more than three million players by September 2025. Nine Sols emphasizes Sekiro-like deflection in a “Taopunk” world; its combat is the draw, not a gothic castle-RPG loop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps leans into expressive movement and presentation, while Animal Well is puzzle-forward. Hollow Knight and its sequel are acclaimed, long-form exploration adventures with a soulslike atmosphere. Those games may be better choices for general genre depth, but the recommendations above are more directly aligned with Castlevania’s particular blend of gothic setting, weapons, loot, and castle routes.

What upcoming games should I keep an eye on?

Two in-development projects are relevant to fans, but neither belongs on a current “play now” list. Treat their dates and availability as unconfirmed unless a later announcement establishes otherwise.

Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement

Revealed in June 2025, The Scarlet Engagement is set in the same universe as Ritual of the Night and introduces new characters. EarlyGame described it as targeted for 2026 in September 2025, while The Outerhaven called it in development in February 2026. Those reports do not establish a firm release date or that it is playable now.

Magnavale: Eternal Soul

Barrier Studios’ Magnavale: Eternal Soul—also known in earlier coverage as Eternal Soul and The Story of Magnadyne: Eternal Soul—is a clear homage to Symphony of the Night, with a castle setting, RPG leveling, and separate light- and heavy-weapon buttons. Time Extension reported that its visuals and music are heavily inspired by Symphony. A Steam page and trailer were live by January 2026, and TvSerious reported in October 2026 that a demo was available but no release date had been announced. It is an upcoming project, not a finished game recommendation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

One newly revealed Castlevania-inspired title does not fit this list’s genre: Vampire Tactics is described as a turn-based tactical RPG / roguelite, with Steam availability listed as to be announced. It is not a Metroidvania.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night an official Castlevania game?

No. It is a separate game made by ArtPlay and published by 505 Games. Its close connection is creative: Koji Igarashi, a longtime Castlevania producer, co-founded ArtPlay and led the project.

Do I need to know Touhou lore before playing Touhou Luna Nights?

No prior series knowledge is required to follow its action. Its time-control mechanics and room puzzles are the main reasons to play it.

Is Belmont’s Curse a sequel to Symphony of the Night?

The available description places its story well before Simon Belmont and centers on Rose Belmont, Trevor’s daughter. It is a new series entry, not a stated continuation of Symphony.

Which Castlevania-style game is best if I only want old-school stages and a whip?

Try Infernax for retro branching action, or Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2 for character switching modeled on Castlevania III. Both are closer to stage-based Castlevania than to a large RPG castle.
