For most work, school, and personal calls, start with a USB webcam that supports 1080p, then check that it works with your computer and calling app. The camera’s resolution is only one part of the picture: field of view, lighting, placement, audio, privacy, and the video mode your app actually sends can matter just as much.
Check compatibility before comparing features
Confirm three things for the exact webcam model: its USB connector, its operating-system requirements, and its support for the video-call apps you use. A camera with a USB-A plug will not fit a USB-C-only computer without an appropriate adapter or hub. Also check the cable length and whether the maker lists compatibility with your operating system and call platform; support can vary by model.
Zoom says its desktop app can use a built-in webcam or a USB plug-in webcam. That does not guarantee every external camera’s optional controls or features work on every operating system. Check the product’s compatibility details as well as your app’s camera settings.
As one maker-published example, Logitech lists the Brio 100 for Windows, macOS, and ChromeOS and names supported calling platforms. Logitech’s Brio 305 is USB-C plug-and-play and lists platform certifications. Logitech also notes that Logi Tune is unavailable for ChromeOS on the Brio 305 page. These are product specifications, not independent performance tests. Logitech Brio 100 specifications; Logitech Brio 305 specifications.

Choose a resolution that fits ordinary calls
For routine calls, 1080p is a sensible baseline. It is widely listed on call-oriented webcams and can provide a clear image when the camera, computer, app, and connection support the mode. Treat the resolution on the box as the camera’s capability, not a promise that every call participant will receive 1080p: the call app’s available settings and network conditions also affect the video sent.
Zoom’s current support page recommends different bandwidth for different meeting video modes. These are Zoom recommendations, not guarantees of a particular webcam’s output:

Zoom says it optimizes bandwidth for the participant’s network conditions. Its figures are recommendations for Zoom meetings, not a guarantee that a given camera or call will use a particular mode. Zoom’s system requirements and bandwidth guidance.
Check the chosen webcam’s computer requirements too. Logitech says the Brio 100 needs 2 GB of RAM or more for 1080p video streaming and that 1 GB is typically needed for 720p; this is Logitech’s guidance for that product, not a universal requirement for all webcams. Match the field of view to your setup
Field of view (FOV) describes how much of the scene appears in the frame. A tighter view can keep attention on one person at a desk; a wider view can fit more than one person or show more of a room. Wider is not automatically better: it can include distracting background, and camera placement and app controls affect the final framing.
Manufacturer specifications illustrate the difference. Logitech lists the Brio 100 at 58.9° diagonal FOV and the Brio 305 at 70° diagonal FOV. Those figures describe the cameras’ listed specifications; they do not establish which produces a better-looking call. Brio 100 specifications; Brio 305 specifications.

Consider focus, light correction, and privacy
Focus type
Autofocus can help if you move around or change distance from the camera. Fixed focus can be suitable for a mostly stationary person at a desk. Neither is inherently the best choice for every call setup; compare the feature with how you sit and move.
Lighting
Good placement and light can make more difference than a larger resolution number. Put light in front of you where possible. A bright window or lamp behind you can leave your face in shadow or make you appear silhouetted. Logitech recommends positioning a webcam near eye level and roughly arm’s length away for a head-and-shoulders frame. Before an important call, select the camera in the app’s settings and check the result. Logitech webcam setup guidance.

Some webcams advertise automatic light correction. For example, Logitech lists RightLight 2 on both the Brio 100 and Brio 305. That is a manufacturer-listed feature, not evidence that either camera will overcome poor lighting in every room.
Privacy
An integrated privacy shutter gives you a physical way to cover the lens when the camera is not in use. Logitech lists an integrated shutter on both example models. If privacy matters to you, confirm the exact model includes one rather than assuming all webcams do.

A built-in microphone may be convenient if you do not already use a headset or separate mic. Compare the microphone details with your room and speaking position; the camera’s inclusion of a microphone does not by itself establish how it will sound in your setup. Logitech lists a mono microphone with a stated range of up to 4 ft for the Brio 100. Brio 100 specifications.
- Mount: Check that the clip fits your monitor or laptop display and whether a tripod option is available if you need one.
- Cable: Make sure it reaches the intended USB port without pulling the camera out of position.
- Software controls: Confirm that any framing or camera controls you want are supported on your operating system.
- Audio needs: If calls require clearer or more consistent speech, consider whether your existing headset or a separate microphone is a better fit than relying on the webcam mic.
Use a short checklist to compare models
- Connector and compatibility: Match USB-A or USB-C to your computer, confirm operating-system requirements, and check the specific call app.
- Video mode: Compare supported resolution and frame rate, then check which modes your app and connection can actually use.
- Framing: Compare diagonal FOV with whether you need a close individual view or room for more people.
- Focus and lighting: Choose fixed focus or autofocus based on how much you move, and consider light correction in the context of your room.
- Practical fit: Check privacy shutter, microphone, mount, cable length, and available software controls.
- Total cost: Compare the complete setup you need, including any adapter or hub required for your computer’s port.
For example, Logitech lists both the Brio 100 and Brio 305 at 1080p/30fps and 720p/30fps with fixed focus. Their listed diagonal FOVs differ (58.9° for the Brio 100 and 70° for the Brio 305); the Brio 100 is USB-A, while the Brio 305 is USB-C plug-and-play. These examples show why a single resolution number is not enough to choose a camera. Product specifications do not establish comparative image quality, value, or durability.
