Choose exercise walking shoes by fit and feel first: they should be comfortable immediately, hold your heel securely, and leave your toes room without letting your foot slide. Then consider cushioning, stability, weight, breathability, and the surfaces you walk on. Try both shoes while walking in the socks you normally wear; a tight pair should not need a break-in period.
Start with fit, not the label
Walking and running shoes are designed for different activity demands, but the name on the shoe does not decide whether it works for you. Compare options by how they feel during your walk and whether they suit your route. Walking-shoe guidance from the Cleveland Clinic emphasizes cushioning and stability; the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society also highlights low weight and shock absorption under the heel and ball of the foot.
Walking places force through the feet: the Cleveland Clinic reported that each step can put about 1.5 times body weight on them, citing physical therapist Michele Dierkes in its 2025 walking-shoe guidance. That figure explains why cushioning matters; it does not specify how much cushioning any individual needs.
How should walking shoes fit?
- Try them later in the day. Feet can expand as the day goes on, so a later fitting can help you judge comfort. Wear the socks you usually use for exercise or walking. The Royal College of Podiatry recommends trying shoes with walking socks; it notes that moisture-wicking socks help keep feet dry.
- Try both shoes and walk around. Check that your heel stays secure and that nothing rubs, pinches, or crowds your toes. Podiatrist Joy Rowland of the Cleveland Clinic says, “The shoe needs to be comfortable, and it needs to fit well.”
- Check toe-box width and depth, not just length. Your toes should have room, without your foot sliding around. If you use an orthotic or need an unusual width, check that the shoe accommodates it; consider professional fitting advice if you are unsure.
- Judge comfort immediately. Do not buy a tight or painful pair expecting it to become comfortable with wear. Physical therapist Michele Dierkes advises, “You shouldn’t feel the need to break your new shoes in.”
Choose cushioning and stability you find comfortable
Cushioning can absorb impact under the heel and forefoot, but the most cushioned shoe is not automatically the best choice. Likewise, the stiffest or most supportive-feeling option is not right for everyone. Cleveland Clinic guidance discusses cushioning, breathability, a firm heel counter, and stability as features to consider; judge their combined feel as you walk rather than treating arch type alone as a universal prescription.

A firm heel counter can help hold the heel, while stability features may help control excessive foot movement. The shoe should still feel comfortable as your foot moves through a step. Consider weight and breathability too, particularly if you expect to walk for a long time or in warm conditions.
Match the shoe to your route

Walking shoes, running shoes worn for walking, and cross-training shoes may all be options. No source cited here establishes one category as best for everyone. If more than one type feels equally comfortable and suits your activity, let fit and personal comfort decide. Cleveland Clinic podiatrist Joy Rowland notes that a shoe store can fit you according to the exercise you plan to do.
When to seek professional advice
If your feet persistently hurt during exercise, Cleveland Clinic advises seeing a podiatrist. Its guidance also recommends consulting a physical therapist when pain limits walking. A fitting specialist can help with shoe fit, but persistent pain or special clinical needs call for appropriate professional advice rather than a shoe choice alone.
