For the widest compatibility with Nintendo Switch Sports, choose original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con. The game supports a single Joy-Con or a left-and-right pair depending on the sport and play style, while Soccer’s optional Leg Strap mode requires an original left Joy-Con. Joy-Con 2 works with the game on Switch 2, but not with the Leg Strap. Check the game’s controller prompt for your chosen sport and player count before buying. Which controllers work with Nintendo Switch Sports?
Nintendo Switch Sports is played with Joy-Con, not a Pro Controller. Nintendo lists single Joy-Con, paired Joy-Con, and Joy-Con with a Leg Strap among the supported configurations, depending on the sport and play style. Neither the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller nor the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is compatible.

Since the required setup varies, don’t assume every player needs a left-and-right pair—or that one controller will cover every sport. When you select a sport and mode, use the game’s on-screen controller setup to confirm what you need.
Original Joy-Con or Joy-Con 2?
Original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con work wirelessly with Switch 2, though they cannot attach to the Switch 2 console rails. Joy-Con 2 is supported with Nintendo Switch Sports on Switch 2, but it cannot be used with the game’s Leg Strap mode. If you want the option to play Soccer with the Leg Strap, choose original Joy-Con.

How many extra Joy-Con should you buy?
Base your purchase on the sports you plan to play and the number of players, then check the in-game setup prompt. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance confirms both single-controller and paired-controller play, but does not provide a complete sport-by-sport and player-by-player count table. Avoid buying on the assumption that every sport uses the same number of controllers.
Nintendo says a Switch system can pair up to eight wireless controllers, but that is a system-level pairing limit—not a guarantee that every Nintendo Switch Sports mode supports eight local players. The maximum varies by software and features. Nintendo’s controller connection guidance explains the distinction.
When do you need the Leg Strap?
The Leg Strap is optional and sport-specific: in Nintendo Switch Sports, it is used for Soccer. It is also designed for Ring Fit Adventure. For Soccer, Nintendo’s instructions show a left original Joy-Con inserted with its control stick facing outward, and the strap positioned at the center of the thigh. Joy-Con 2 is not compatible with the Leg Strap.
If Leg Strap Soccer is part of your plan, check whether the strap is already included in your game bundle or available from a listing you are considering; do not assume a controller listing includes it. Nintendo’s Leg Strap instructions show how to position and use it.

What to check before buying a listing
- Controller generation: Confirm whether the listing is for original Switch Joy-Con or Joy-Con 2. For Leg Strap mode, you need original Joy-Con.
- Contents: Check whether the listing contains one controller or a left/right pair, and whether wrist strap accessories are included. Do not infer the contents from a product photo or the word “Joy-Con.”
- Sport and player setup: Match the quantity to the chosen sport and player count using the game’s controller prompt.
- Condition: Verify the seller’s description of condition and included accessories; Nintendo’s compatibility guidance does not establish the quality or contents of any particular listing.
- Charging if you use Switch 2: Original Joy-Con pair wirelessly with Switch 2 but cannot attach to its rails. Nintendo says you need an original Switch console or a compatible charging accessory, such as a Joy-Con charging grip or charging stand, to charge original Joy-Con.
Use the wrist strap with detached Joy-Con
Nintendo instructs players to attach Joy-Con strap accessories whenever they use detached Joy-Con wirelessly. The original strap accessory is model HAC-014. To attach it, align the plus or minus marks, slide the strap onto the Joy-Con rail, and lock the slide lock. Put on the wrist loop and tighten it so it cannot fall off; Nintendo advises against over-tightening. Nintendo’s strap instructions illustrate the fitting steps.

Nintendo Switch Sports does not support handheld mode. Nintendo recommends TV Mode on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch – OLED Model, or Nintendo Switch 2 for the best experience. For a detached-controller setup, choose compatible Joy-Con, confirm the sport’s controller prompt, and make sure the required wrist straps are available.
